@kudoista Жыл бұрын
Thanks for doing a breakdown of Kudo. I’ve been a practitioner of this art for over 20 years and I agree with most of what you say. I often hear people who haven’t done Kudo talk about how poor the punch defense is. And while that may be true for some practitioners, the higher level guys have very good punch defense. What people don’t understand is the added size of the helmet makes the head a bigger, easier target to hit, and the fact that we don’t use gloves increases hand speed, making it harder to defend effectively. So a lot of punches will manage to get through. It’s not that we are all slack about it. 😅 There is a point system in Kudo where solid strikes to the head can win you a point,. So if the match goes to a judges decision, the person with more points can win. So taking shots to the head is something we all want to avoid. In the Kudo dojo’s that I have trained at we work a lot on punch defense and counter striking. But remember it is an amateur sport, so generally we’re not going to be as good as top level pro’s. Just like a lot of amateur kickboxers have crappy defense too. Take their gloves off and it would be even worse. One of the big differences between Kudo and MMA that I have found is the wrestling element. There is a far bigger emphasis placed on wrestling in MMA. Where as in Kudo it’s more clinching and throwing . The limited ground and pound in Kudo is also a noticeable difference.

I have a nidan in Kyokushin and a brown belt in Ashihara and while I absolutely love both of those arts, there is no doubt in my mind that Kudo makes the most well rounded fighter of all of them. If you didn’t have a BJJ background and already have the ground covered as it were, I think you would find Kudo more appealing than Ashihara as it teaches all combat ranges in a way Ashihara doesn’t tend to do (no ground work). About the Gi-element you mention: I practise Karate for over 25 years (started with Shotokan, switched to an okinawan style, which I practise for 18 years now), and we always practise our throws and gripping as if we did not wear any kind of Gi. Because "on the streets" literally nobody wears a Gi. We always "grapple" as if we did not wear any kind of Gi. As this seem much more realistic to us. And no, here in Germany wears a coat or something that would resemble a Gi. So it is always a good thing to practise you no-Gi-grappling skills.

Cool, on the topic of "breaking" in Kyokushin Karate tournaments, breaking wood boards is a prerequisite for competing. A fighter has to break at least three boards with various hand or elbow and sometimes foot techniques. Say there is a 'tie' after numerous extensions, the winner would be determined by the number of boards broken and the lighter weight fighter can win by the board calculation.

Mas Oyama or Masutatsu Oyama learnt traditional Korean Martial Arts and Chinese Martial Arts from his uncle as a child growing up in South Korea. He furthered his studies in Japan as a young man and learnt Karate when he was there. During World War 2 he changed his Korean name Choi Yeong-Eu to Japanese one Masutatsu Oyama. He served as a mechanic in the Japanese Air Force during the war years. Nowhere in his interviews by Black Belt Magazine etc did he ever said he learnt Judo. In his first published book "THIS IS KARATE" ... not a single Judo technique was demonstrated! In an interview with Black Belt Magazine back then he claimed he fought Siamese/Thai Boxer BLACK COPRA and defeated the Thai Boxer. This much I know about Masutatsu Oyama.

Good video. I first heard about Kudo during covid. I came across some videos from a guy who teaches it up in Wales. I think the only downside to this art, from a self defense perspective, is they don't teach you the kind of skills and drills you would get in a self defense system. This would however, be a great supplement to whatever self defense system you're training in. The main 2 being, grappling, and the transition between striking and grappling. I don't know why, but grappling seems to be lacking in all major self defense martial arts

Well it is true that we train to take hard shots to the chest and stomach. We also employ a circular style of blocking some of those shots. I have trained in Kyokushin since 1985. But we do tend to stay in the pocket too long, at least when I teach we also do kickboxing and circular movements. There is a time and a place to stay in the pocket, yet you need to be aware of when it's time to move out and do so fast.

@mikhailvasiliev6275 Жыл бұрын
I've got a few things to say about this. Kudo has always been interesting to me because it's almost perfect. The only issue I have with it is the helmets and how they change the fighting. Kudokas are defensively irresponsible to the point where it's honestly depressing. Granted, the style HAS parries and blocks in its curriculum but they're almost never used because nobody has to worry about getting busted up. There's a difference between encouraging street-reastic urgency and encouraging stupidly rushing with no regard for counters. Also yeah, headbutts are nice. But even when we're talking about self-defense, time spent training headbutts is time spent not training basic defense. I know which one I'd choose. Unfortunately that's enough to ruin my opinion of the sport. Hopefully someone in the future swallows their pride and this "big gloves or no face punch" non-issue is done away with, but I'm not holding my breath.

What people don’t understand is the added size of the helmet makes the head a bigger, easier target to hit, and the fact that we don’t use gloves increases hand speed, making it harder to defend effectively. So a lot of punches will manage to get through. It’s not that we are all slack about it. There is a point system in Kudo where solid strikes to the head can win you a point,. So if the match goes to a judges decision, the person with more points can win. So taking shots to the head is something we all want to avoid. In the Kudo dojo’s that I have trained at we work a lot on punch defense and counter striking. But remember it is an amateur sport so generally we’re not going to be as good as top level pro’s. Just like a lot of amateur kickboxers have crappy defense too. Take their gloves off and it would be even worse.

@@kudoista You said a lot but my overarching response to this is that you should not need to be a "higher level practitioner" to have passable punch defense. As for the helmets, I really.. REALLY think you should take notes from sambo. That means ditching the biker gear and switching out the MMA gloves with hybrids to reduce the risk of cuts. Force yourselves to stop using the bigger target thing as an excuse. The harsh truth is that most of these Kudokas would get absolutely humiliated by anyone with even basic boxing knowhow.

Can you do a video of how you can combine karate and Muay Thai
@inside_fighting Жыл бұрын
Yes that’s a cool idea

That was basically the idea Oyama had for Kyokushin. Hevalso admired Western boxing.

How about Combat Sambo? They use the headbutt

Would you still consider Kudo as Karate,despite it not having kata like other karate branches do?
@georgegeorge6356 Жыл бұрын
this video was great. an idea is to make one for pankration. not the modern one which has nothing to do with the past , but the ancient real one. you can see in some pottery that some of them have even stance guard like muay thai

Mas Oyama and Kimura trained together for years Oyama was a fourth Dan Kodokan who taught Masahiko Kimura Karate and trained with Kimura ...the 8 th Dan Kodokan and Kosen Judo master. He also was trained in Kempo when he was young in South Korea. . Not just a Shotokan and Goju ryu master. Oyama was very strong physically and used weight training constantly to build his power

Is this a system or a rule set? I think you could utilise all training methods in this, providing you were a hard ass (and under 40!)

The Gracies wore Gis in the early days of UFC. Maybe Dana could allow an option for both fighters to wear a Gi if they want to.
