Thank you for another great video, for me drawing and printmaking are the most compelling disciplines in art so this was definitely a treat! Of these artists I was only familiar with Andrea Bowers and William Kentridge… and I had only recently became aware of their work, so I can’t wait to do some more research and exploration into the artists you have introduced in this video!

Received honors in drawing at SFAI by Bruce MaGaw (Bay Area Abstract Figurative) student of Richard Diebenkorn. He rightly recognized my love of drawing. There was a saying going around SFAI at that time (1976) that, drawing was the same as painting. That struck me and after all these years still have it in mind. I see it yet battle with it so strong is my love for drawing.

I won't go on like I often do with a fuller explanation, but will simply say that none of these artists strike me as particularly good draftsmen or very talented. They all fall into the category of replicating the "look" that is apparently acceptable to many modern galleries. In my view, standards have fallen by the wayside, classical or excellent training is out, and there is a great paucity of real talent that could stand side by side with actual past masters. When standards change for the worse, this is what you get.

Somewhat agree. Most these rely on spectacle and or style - which has its place - rather than artistry. Perhaps skill and proficiency isn't considered influential?

Skill and talent still is very much appreciated in todays art world, hence Kentridge taking the top spot. It takes more effort for sure to appreciate less obvious beauty, but it can last much longer. Further, I don't believe art should be beautiful to be good in the first place. But that's a discussion. In any case, thank you for sharing your most honest opinion, and thank you for tuning in!

@@contemporaryartissue Thank you for the reply. Well clearly there are as many definitions of beauty as their are people opining. For example, I find great beauty not only in a well-composed Monet landscape, but also in a morbid Goya depiction of torture and treachery, and also in a quite abstract almost random looking charcoal drawing by deKooning with its innovative strokes and lovely smoky gray tones. I cannot think of a great work of art that is not beautiful. As for Kentridge, I never heard of him, now I see his work, and frankly it is not very good.

I really like Sandra Vásquez de la Horra, particularly that last image on the folded paper. Her work gives me hope for my ambition of drawing (pun intended) imagery from gothic literature and hopefully sparking a new gothic revival. A man can dream.

I agree, Jim Dine is more famous than many artists from our list. However his primary focus is painting, closely followed by drawing and then sculpture, assemblage, performance and photography. So we have opted to excluded Jim Dine for consideration, even though he also has a strong body of works on paper for sure. Difficult call!

:@@contemporaryartissue Dine has made significant contributions to the medium of drawing as well as printmaking. The film "Self Portrait On the Walls," a documentary film by his wife, Nancy, received an Academy Award nomination in 1996. In this film Dine is shown creating an entire charcoal drawing exhibition on the walls of an art museum in Germany. He has had large exhibitions exclusively of drawing and/or printmaking at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the Glyptotek Museum in Munich and the Morgan Library in New York and the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris. One might quibble over whether or not he is more a painter than draftsman but, in this case his accomplishments in drawing are significant.

Kentridge is the only drawer of note that backs up your claim. The rest are ridiculous. I draw, I live in NYC. Drawing has always been it's own sovereign. There is no other medium like it. Going back to the cave drawings up to the present day.

There’s something ridiculous about choosing Anni Albers who true was importance was in fabric design and not for instance Freud who was far better at drawing, prints, and painting. And both he, de Kooning, David Hockney, and Jasper Johns were born after 1899. Can you compare either his beginning or current drawings to Anni Albers. I can think of dozens of others like Agnes Martin. I own Kentridge print but first?

To follow up my previous comment calling into question all of these artists as not particularly skilled, I will add one more big criticism. And this criticism is more about all the curators and venues that promote and subscribe to these brands of imagery. By now we could all easily predict what sort of artists and images check off enough boxes in our society's fake issues and mostly far-Left fabrications to create plenty of unwarranted attention, fame, and fortune. And by checking those boxes I am referring to the many boxes characterized by Political Correctness. Galleries and even museums just plod along with their usual ploys of reflecting extreme minority topics and causes uninteresting and unimportant to the vast majority of gallery and museum goers. This is all so obvious that I won't bother pointing out particular examples; this video is chock full of them.
