It is a bit surprising, but from the little I know of him, James Charles does enjoy games of various kinds and also likes to watch KZbin videos, so it is also understandable that he might stumble across this channel. The only reason I found this video is because of the swordfish pattern.

while yes, the algorithm did this man a service over the previous week, i feel like i can watch almost any content if the person presenting it is showing so much delight in it just like this guy. it’s the same reason we watch other people play video games that we don’t play ourselves. if their passion comes through, they hold your attention.
@joshandrews8913
@joshandrews8913 4 жыл бұрын
The algorithm helped a lot of people find the channel, but it doesn't make people keep watching. Simon and Mark are the reason we watched more than just one suggested video. I don't even know why their channel was suggested to me a couple months ago, but I've been hooked. As a kid, I liked Sudoku puzzles, but I only knew about classics. Then one of their videos was recommended and I was like "WHAT? There are other kinds of Sudoku?" and I started solving puzzles again.

The algorithm is rewarding this channel for having reliably quality material though, it's not undeserved
@57thorns
@57thorns 4 жыл бұрын
Most of the channels I follow are like this one: Very high quality content, that takes a lot of effort to crate, with passionate creators that manage to share their passion for the subject. And they all are happy whenever they reach 10k, 50k or 100k. Meanwhile, trash is generally getting millions of subscribers and fail if they drop below a million views, but never fail hard enough to drop out of recommendations for just about everyone. These channels, if they try something different (like when Cracking the Cryptic show the occasional cryptic crossword, which is where they started) are extremely vulnerable. If just a small fraction of their viewer are not in the mood this time, or not as interested in that single video, the Algorithm suddenly decides that promoting this channel is not worth promoting. Which is why it is so important to support these smaller channels (less than half a million) by commenting and liking. KZbin call it "audience participation". And it is so easy on this channel just to go to the puzzle, solve it and move on with your day. You have enjoyed the content, but KZbin just see you looking at a short part of the video and as they could not sell any ads, it is not content they will promote.

This is absolutely fascinating to watch! I used to do sudoku puzzles when I first started working but for whatever reason stopped. I came here through KZbin recommendation and it is just amazing to see how quickly these are figured out - also, I never heard of the Knight's move and King one before now - a really cool and neat additional rule to the standard sudoku! The only 4 digit video was what brought me to this channel and I'm quite quickly becoming hooked! :D

As a kid I used to absolutely love solving sudoku's, they weren't of the same caliber as the ones you're solving obviously, but coming across this channel and seeing the joy you're radiating of solving the puzzles reminds me I really have to have another go at solving sudoku's. Thank you for the lovely content!

At 24:50 is it allowed to use "reverse psychology" and deduce that the only square that could resolve the x-wing by the knights move is row 2 col 9, and as it can't be a 2, it's a 7. I've seen this come up in variety of puzzles and wondered if it's okay to use the fact that there is only one solution to the puzzle.

That would basically be solving by uniqueness, which is generally not regarded a nice way and therefore not used if possible.
@Qazqi
@Qazqi 4 жыл бұрын
That tactic will work as long as the assumption that the puzzle has a unique solution holds (and on this channel, that's a really safe assumption). The point of contention there is that there could be a different piece of logic that the setter was hoping you'd find, so by using uniqueness, you might miss out on a little something.
@PH34RB
@PH34RB 4 жыл бұрын
"Uniqueness" is what they call it, and on this channel they try to avoid using it - being meta-knowledge and all. It absolutely works! Purists prefer a fully logical solution so they do their best to oblige. Simon in particular will note it and dutifully find another logical path. Mark sometimes does a few "fast and loose" educated guesses, to speed it up, as rapid solvers are wont to do.

At 22:00 you have 3 squares in the middle with pencil marks of 237, 23 and 27 in the central square. A trick I found that seems to work for me is that you can resolve those 3 unknowns into a pair of unknowns by singling out one of the numbers and leaving a pair. In this case you can put a 3 where the 23 is marked leaving behind two unknowns with 27 marks. I call it a TMI because I perform the action whenever I see that there is “too much information”

I'm new to this channel and loving it. I've been doing Soduko for years and usually get the books. never tried a Knights move before trying that 4 digit beast yesterday now I'm hooked. Same thing happened when I finally tried Killer Sudoku. Love all your techniques too, X-wing, Sky scrapers and empty rectangle. Adds discipline to my puzzling. Keep up the good work

Before discovering this channel, I had little to no interest in most puzzles like the ones you cover. Now, I absolutely love seeing what new challenges people can make and sometimes solving them myself! If your goal is to prove that puzzles belong in the mainstream, then you're doing that in spades. Congrats on 100K!

Solved it in 1hr & 21mins (still have a lot to learn from you), but what I've noticed is that my solution is actually a bit different than yours. I've solved it with your website and it said "Looks good to me!" so I think the solution was also correct. On columns 1, 5, 8, and 9 I have the positions of the numbers in its first 2 rows swapped, and by Knight's move I also ended up swapping the positions of 2 & 7 in columns 6 & 8. Been watching your videos this past few days since that 4 given sudoku appeared on my recommended videos and I'm loving your contents a lot (especially the ones on Killer Sudoku, since it's my favorite sudoku variant), not to mention I've been learning a lot as well. :D

So, I just started attempting Sudoku because I got started watching these videos, and....I'm hella stuck on this one. I haven't watched the video yet, but will update on if I accomplish this. I'm pretty set on making it happen. EDIT: 2:09:48! It took me over 2 hours, but I DID complete it without any mistakes. Only about thirty more years of practice and I'll be good to go. Now it's time to watch this video.

I love your videos. Originally got here from the one with only 4 given digits, I've found your voice and appearance to be very calm and relaxing, the way you explain the puzzles is also wonderful and I really love how much your passion for it is showing! These videos have really raised my interest in going through Sudokus again, thank you so much for that!

This is the first one where I decided to try and beat it before you. This puzzle took me 2 hours and 25 minutes to solve and I got stuck just once and needed your help on the 7 in box 3 that helped you to finish out the rest of it because I didn't make the connection of the two 3/4 pairs allowing the 7 to come through. For never really going at hard mode puzzles I can say even after 2.5 hours I feel very accomplished!

I haven't done a sudoku in maybe 10 years and after watching you do the miracle sudoku I clicked over to this video and attempted this one before watching you solve it, it took me 2 and a half hours of painful brute forcing to do this, watching you just breeze through it makes me want to really practice these, had a lot of fun though

I don't know if you'll ever read this but I've been watching your videos for the last few days and have been fascinated and intrigued by the logic you use to solve these puzzles. I used to do Sudoku years ago but fell out of love with it. You've re-ignited my love of logic games and inspired me to try harder puzzles than I used to. I just had to try this one. It took me almost 2 1/2 hours but I managed to solve it. Keep making videos and I'll keep watching 'em. Thanks!
