I perhaps have a heightened awareness of ethnocentrism, anthro grad student, but I've now watched several franchises where maybe editing wasn't perfect but 1 thing they can't control, imo, perhaps bc Ru & Michelle aren't judges, is expression of cultural values. We've gotten almost no cultural expression on Global AS & that's pretty fcked up. It's why I've turned twds mostly only viewing DR MX & Asian franchises which imo, are truly quite beautiful to watch & I'd recommend even for non lang speakers. There's less extremes in the wealth b/w Queens, also a byproduct of cultural norms, & production doesn't seem so overtly heavy handed abt maneuvering Queens into place. I've seen lip syncs that move entire judges panel to tears from the emotions packed into lip syncs. On Global AS, besides Alyssa /Kween ls, the ls's give off very little but it's not the Queens' fault. They're being put in the impossible position of being likely recruited for this season, committing to speak Eng on cam, & while they come from 12 radically different places, they're not being given any accommodations. Why aren't they being given translations of challenges to read, or even the lyrics in their native languages? That's the train wreck to me. If this was having in an academic or typical work environmnt, they'd have translators on hand. When Michelle was giving that inconsistent coaching on "Bewbies", if this was filmed in the US, there'd be advocates for the intl Queens but they're filming in Costa Rica, where by lrg they can exploit Queens for their own gain. That we watch w/baited breath for each episode, that's also pretty fcked up. No, I won't stop watching bc ultimately, I feel it would disrespect all the work& sacrifices these Queens put in over their lifetimes. My hope is another entity, that's more ethical breaks off from the machine WOW's become, bc 1 entity shouldn't be allowed to literally keep a stranglehold on the dreams of not only US, but Queens from every part of the world. There's a reason we don't have monopolies & I think we're seeing it here

The way AS9 had made the fanbase turn on Angeria who was a fan favorite on S14 but bc of production choosing to rig her into the top 3 when there were talent show performances better than her and not winning the final lipsync either it has tarnished her moment of winning the season.

EXACTLY!!! I LOVED Angeria, and I really didn’t want to discredit her winning, but the riggory was RIFE! Plastique, Jorgeous, AND Nina all had better performances in the talent show, and Vanjie won the final lipsync for me. But it was very unsatisfying for Roxxxy to win all her lipsyncs across 3 seasons just to lose the finale lipsync.

and the worst part is Angeria really did amazing and along with Roxxxy and Plastique she was undoubtably in the top 3, but while Plastique had no real storyline in the season, she was doing very good but that was it, Angeria and Roxxxy set up the rivalry that lasted the whole season and should've had its closure with a top2 lipsync between them. Instead, they chose to rig a challenge with that bullshit 3 star twist to give the impression other queens had the chance to win, taking away Plastique's deserved spot in the top 3 and making Angeria seem undeserving of being there, heavily swaying the public's opinion towards Roxxxy and undermining Angeria's eventual win. It really sucks, they screwed a very good and enjoyable season with just one move.

If you’re the editor of the show and you know who’s going to win in the end, you want to build up that individual in the edit. My issue with AS9 is that it has some of the best challenges in modern AS, such as Rusical and Roast, and dare I say the best runways of any drag race season. But the final two episodes and some of the other twists tarnish the season so heavily. They had absolute gold sitting next to the trash heap and it ruined the appeal.

Roxxxy should have won. She has the legacy, she had the storyline, she had the editing, she had the wins... Angeria is great, but I'm sorry, Roxxxy deserved that win. I'm tired of them bringing back true legends only to have them cast aside in favor of a new young queen. Shannel was robbed too. That talent show was HERS. Too often, the judging on this show is trash, and if they're gonna keep screwing over deserving contestants, then they really need to just put a cap on how many times you can compete. Or, seasoned queens need to just stop coming back.

I was frustrated with All Stars 8 tbh. Just the drama that surrounded Kandy and Jimbo made me not hold the season's finale in high regard. I mean it just felt haphazardly messy with all of the tea that was spilled at Roscoe's and post season interviews, especially the one where Kandy was literally sabotaged from winning, it frustrated me. Don't get me wrong, Jimbo is incredible TV, and while it was basically her season to win after the chaos of UK vs the World 1, it just felt like a weird finale. If you asked me, All Stars 8 should've introduced the Canada's Drag Race twist instead of using the lipstick twist. That would've made the season way better than it turned out imo.

Drag Race UK Season 3 could also go on here. You have Ella Vaday, who dominated the majority of the season and who never landed in the bottom, and Kitty Scott-Claus, who had a slower rise but a solid track record and ALSO never landed in the bottom… and Krystal Versace, who started very strong but fumbled a few times through the season and had the weakest track record of the three, was the winner in the end. It was clear she was RuPaul’s favorite in the season, as she was saved on a few instances, given the first “Born To Do Drag” speech (after she tanked on Snatch Game and was saved from the bottom), given a questionable challenge win in Episode 2, and got a quasi-villain edit a few times. I mean, objectively she did the best in the finale (especially since her biggest competition, Ella, apparently injured her back and couldn’t do much). And I will say, Krystal is a talented DA, and I wish her the best. It just felt like a case of crowning the girl who was RuPaul’s favorite from the jump, no matter what happened through the season.

See, if Ella had not messed up the last 15 minutes of that episode so badly, I'd be angry at the show for not letting her win cause she did the best in the season by a wide margin. And Krystal won her way to that finale. All three of her lip syncs were exceptional. Kitty I just could not see winning. Everything Kitty did in the Season, Ella did better with vastly less drag experience.

And then for the acting challenge, Kitty was obviously better but they twisted it into a top 2, and then Kitty did better on the lipsync but they still had a tie between her and Ella. So you could say Ella won by her own merits only 2 of her wins.

Drag Race just has weak finales for some reason...I feel like the real sweet spot of seasons is like episodes 3 to whenever they get to a top 5. To be honest, when I rewatch seasons a lot of times I just won't watch the finale, I already know who wins obviously and there's so much filler, they're not super interesting, and I hate all the sappy stuff, especially when Ru is involved since he just comes off way more manipulative than empathetic. I think I may have never even seen the season 13 finale because the winner was spoiled for me by Drag Race's FB page and I heard the actual episode was bad lol! So excited for more Drag Duel!

Drag Race Italia s1 is pretty infamous for Elecktra Bionic, the first ever winner who had never won a maxy challenge, always placing safe during the season but then snatching the crown from Farida Kant, who had 2 wins and never placed below safe. That pretty much was the cherry on top of a very messy season (unfortunately italian production teams were not seeing drag race as a format to follow but just as another show to twist into the very trashy way we do reality tv here) and it alienated a huge part of the fanbase. Thx god s2 and 3 were miles better and now Nehellenia is winning over ppl hearts, even tho s3 could also be on the list bc ppl were fully expecting Melissa Bianchini to win, but this time at least Lina Galore had a very close track record and her win was totally understandable and deserved.

Re: AS7, I just don't get how they don't see this when casting...? Like you're casting Monet, Yvie... if you don't want to crown them, why the FUCK would you let there be an advertised "lipsync for the crown"???? Very easy fix, just make all finales like a pageant. Solo lipsync performance to a full song, runway ball (3 themed looks), speech/interview about why they should win or what it would mean for the world and/or the franchise. Then the judges deliberate, and "based on your performances tonight, as well as throughout the season, [blah blah]" 😂 that would dead so much of the criticism. Edit: they could even work the lipsync gauntlet *in*, but just have it not result in eliminations and instead be "just another thing" that gives points during the finale. The ball could be interspersed throughout, so: - Runway Category 1 - Interview/Speeches - Brief filler while they change... - Lipsync Smackdown - Runway Category 2 - Filler 2 while they prep for... - Solo Numbers - Congeniality - Runway Category 3 ("finale eleganza"/crowning looks) - Crowning (they could even score them so who know who's 4th, 3rd, and then announce the winner).

Y'know what I miss? The custom songs. I think it was only seasons 7 and 8, where each finalist would lipsynch to a song that was written specifically for them. It'd have their vibe, reference fun moments from the rest of the season, but there was no pressure over having to beat another queen in direct competition. Finally someone understands what I mean about AS7 finale. There's absolutely no way you can justify Jinkx winning without that WhatsApp voicemail of RuPaul changing the rules last second. Even with that AWFUL edit, we could see how Monét was KEELLING the lipsync. Lipsynching is Drag 101, there's no way you can get away with this, but we're talking about a season with winners and we know not all of them are great lip synchers. If they did just a pointing system, it would be fine (of course, without the extra stars on the talent show - or maybe with extra stars on Snatch Game too). And maybe in case of a tie you put them to lipsync - but not a song you know Monét is going to make a carnage on stage, there are plenty of other Yma Sumac music, or maybe Florence + the Machine, Radiohead, I don't know. If you're going to rig the finale, at least do it right. Put on the focus on the winner and put clips of RuPaul not reacting to the gags the other queen is doing, like they did to Yvie. But don't make them Lip Sync for the Crown and all of the sudden make their performance throughout the competition matter more.

@@claudionosotti8812 Imo what should have been done is, lip sync smackdown should be an episode. For each lip sync you win, you get a star. That way you could easily end up with Monet getting 3 stars and then Yvie or Shea and I guess Raja or Jaida getting 2, 1 , 1 each. Then do the talent show at the end and cheat there. Also if you count both highs and wins, Jinkx doesn't actually have the best track record. Yes she won 5 episodes but every other episode she was safe. Monet won three but was high for four more. Trinity won four and was high for two more. Two highs should count at least as much as one win imo.The thing is, the Queens did not even know who the two high placements were cause we only saw them in the final edit.

Manila shouldn’t have even been in the bottom for the makeover challenge, and I feel like I don’t ever see anyone say this. Monet’s makeover was crazy, even Monique clocked it in the episode, and 1000% should have been in the bottom with Latrice. Manila’s looks were safe but it was definitely family resemblance passable enough to get her to the low position. The judging that episode has always been insane to me. However, in retrospect, Monet is such an icon and we wouldn’t have had her on AS7 without that buffoonery so idk if I’d change anything or not 😂

In the category of "Finale that had a Top 4 lipsync for the crown where the two best performing queens of the season (by a lot) got suspiciously cut before the final lipsync" you could put UK v The World Season 2. Who actually won the Hannah vs Marina and Tia vs LGD lipsyncs can be controversial because there's definitely not a clear consensus, but it still was wild to watch.

I would rightly add the AS8 final, which was... A disaster. They decided to make a final with the top 2 performing original songs, the problem was that neither of them were performers and the songs were bad, the queen who would have annihilate that format was sent home at top 3 giving us a final in which nothing interesting happens, everything was too obvious. The winner of the crown and the winner of the Fame Games could have been seen from a mile away, disappointing is a misunderstanding.

11:40 What do you do? Crown the person that slayed the finale, and edit the season to better fit them and build up their story arc. Track records aside (which are already dubious at best), it's still a competition. If you do poorly one week, then you go home. This should include the finale as well. To me it adds more stakes, because it's literally anyone's game at that point, and the frontrunner can't get too comfortable. I'll take a winner that didn't necessarily do the best during the competition but slayed the finale, over a winner that had to be pushed just because they had the "better track record". It'll be the finale I remember the most since it's the last episode anyway.

The one thing I’ll add about things like the ruby snippers and golden plunger. I think I’m going more in an All Stars tangent but Have those actually create some stakes if you’re doing something like that. Instead of blocking points which in the end don’t matter when they’ve introduced so many “win a bunch of badges/stars” at the end of the season challenge. But have the queens on the receiving end of the snippers/plunger be unable to compete in the next challenge. You got the plunger/snippers, you’re out of the challenge meaning you can’t earn badges or stars but as a formality you can stomp the runway.

Right!! I’m not a fan of bitter juries, but he deserved to lose purely due to how unnecessarily cruel he was. He made great tv but gosh he kinda sucks as a human being,(a lot of the stuff he’s said outside of the show is just awful) lol, and his jury management was such ass. AS4’s finale was made worse by the fact they hadn’t filmed a double crowning and cut it together in post, for sure. (AS3 and other seasons have had double crowning options filmed.) I think there was also a push from fans to have a non-blonde-and-white queen in the Hall of Fame after four seasons.

Down Under season 1 had Electra shock, it had Anita, Maxi, Coco, Jojo and Etcetera. All very compelling queens they could have made a great season focusing on more. I think the problem is they decided that people would care most about the more famous, more polished queens on the cast and nobody else. Electra had an underdog storyline and Anita had that one moment but that was it, most of those queens got very little. Luckily season two pivoted and didn't stop an amazingly talented queen from slaying the comp and winning just because she had crunchy drag.

There are way more frustrating finales, than all stars 7 and 9. Seasons 13 and 14 for example or all stars 8. Also, what was frustrating in season 10. Aquarias win made sense as she was the only right choice there. So...out of 6 finales, only 3 cases which made sense in order to call finales frustrating (All stars 3 and 4 and down under). And yes, All stars 4 is the worst season in all stars history, mind you.

Espana 3 and Espana All Stars were frustrating full seasons. My partner and I are in the same boat as you about AS9. We don’t ever want to rewatch it or even discuss it, and we do that for most seasons all the time! Drag Race has been getting so brazen with their predetermined outcomes and it’s killing my enjoyment of newer seasons. Lately, it’s either that or the edit doesn’t support the outcome they choose and it doesn’t make sense.

as much as i love Elecktra Bionic, her win was undeserved: on Italia 1 there was Farida Kant, who slayed the season, won 2 of the 5 challenges but was forgettable in the finale, while Elecktra was the best (besides maybe Luquisha who had a very bumpy ride to the finale); problem comes when Elecktra never won a challenge and still got the crown…
