In grocery stores, they actually charge vendor companies for different levels of shelf locations for their products. The stores that do not charge instead try to place the most purchased and in demand products at these locations. So much research gows into even the smallest details of placement. Grange theory is also incredible to see in action.

I am a walmart employee. We get a discount card that lets us get a small percentage off of ALMOST anything we buy at ANY walmart. .... It says a lot that we still prefer costco ... and the nearest one is about an hour away. To bad we can't make that kind of trip often.

Just in case no one has said it yet, the Hot Dog story comment didn't happen in 1984, that was when the combo came out. That conversation happened between the CEO and Founder in 2008.

My wife and I used to use costco for date night back in college before we got married. Matinee movie followed by costco samples for lunch, doesn't get much better than that for college students

As someone who worked for a couple different grocery stores over the years, the amount of research and trickery is insane. At one where I was a lead stocker, we used to get a book once a quarter with the upcoming sales, and would set end caps by the book to the shelf for max sales.

Tbh, the 'treasure hunt' strategy, would just piss me off. If I had to ask where the same things are everytime I came in the store, you have about two or three strikes before I just cancel my membership and don't shop there at all.
