In case you aren't aware, the special they watched at the end was from Critic's review of The Christmas Tree, his previous worst Christmas special of all time.

This nutcracker movie makes Jim Carrey's Grinch movie look like it's a wonderful life. Yes I actually went there.

I never realized that you haven't seen Rachel yet. Sime of my favorite reviews that she was involved with are "Son of the Mask", "The Cat and the Hat", "Devil", "Pearl Harber", etc. Edit: You've seen her in three Nostalgia Critic videos so far.

oh yeah, I guess I have seen her before. I reacted to Son of the Mask and The Cat in the Hat reviews. I guess I'm just used to seeing Tamara, Jim, Bob and Malcolm.

At least the shark can rest happily knowing it'll Never appear in this movie again

It's not shown in the review, but there is a shot where you can see the shark "resetting its position" in the background. Meaning the Rat King has an animatronic shark for purposes of dramatic demonstrations.

Also, it's kinda sad that they never return to this set here at least for a special video or something like that. Oh well! We all have to move on, I guess.

To answer your question on what of this film was in the original: Damn near nothing. I meam, the original was a story about a young girl falling asleep and waking up in a magic Christmas-styled world at war between the Toys led by the Nutcracker prince, and the Vermimous mice led by the Mouse King (rat king in some versions.) At least, the First Act is. The second act basically has the loving young couple visit the Sugar Plum Fairies in the Land of Sweets for worldly delights and festivities. For your daydreaming pleasure, the treats and dignitaries are as follows: Chocolate from Spain Coffee from Arabia Candy canes from Russia Tea from China Ended off with the sweets dancing like bees in a beehive (acording to the original Libretto), and the girl and prince ride off to the wintery white world in a sleigh. So yeah, Konchalovsky was VERY off-base, considering this story is a Russian prize. I think he did this in order to make his own "Stalker (1979)" like the man he wrote films with, Andrej Tarkovsky. Yes, Andrej "Nearly killed by the Soviets for making Stalker" Tarkovsky.

This version of nutcracker is so bizarre, I get a kick out of seeing other people discover it.

Hey, Lola. Have you ever heard of or would like to see a rubber tire kill people? Then, you're in luck. Because Doug made a review for a movie titled Rubber, and yes the killer is a tire...

In normal productions of the Nutcracker it's all just a ballet about a little girl discovering a world of magic under the Christmas tree. Some versions might have a narrator in the beginning otherwise it's all just music and dancing.

To add to that, there is usually a Mouse King as the villain and the Nutcracker Prince trying to reclaim the throne, but that's just about where the similarities end.
