@George Lynch Dixon MOST Guitarists play Guitar Chords in a "SCHOOLED", ORTHODOX and PROFESSIONAL Manner. Jimi' played Chords and his Fingering of the Fretboard was TOTALLY Unorthodox and wasn't Confined to Traditional Fingering! That's what I have achieved as a Guitarist and I also apply that approach to my everyday Life in General.

@@paul479 100% Paul, if it sounds good, it is good, period. However, This helps me (and some others) remember this chord, and also use this like a tool, or like learning a new word… so we can use that chord 1) in another situation, (easily and without a capo) 2)with other instruments, 3) and describe to other musicians, (especially ones that don’t read guitar player hands) …there may be an overemphasis sometimes in the academics of Music Theory, but it’s also super useful like reading and writing - to each their own though-

I think what makes this so emotional is that it kind of sounds like a lullaby. Like when you switch between major and minor keys, it's almost like it's rocking you back and forth. It makes you feel comforted. It starts happy, then gets sad, then gets happy again.

The harmony in the beginning is subjective, you could analyze it as a Dmaj, going to a Gm6, OR a Dmaj voice leading to a Dmaj7(#5/9) creating a Lydyian augmented harmony. Its all about context and the beauty of Melodic minor harmony and the chords being all interchangeable. Or it could be derived from a harmonic major (1,2,3 4,5,b6,7) on the D which would make for the 4 minor chord. Again, subjective and about context.

In Europe(netherlands and germany at least) we call this a "mol-dur" chord or progression. Basicly u just play the minor 4 chord (minor 6th interval from tonic) in a major scale. It is a a very powerful tool and has been used over the last centuries by many and i mean many composers/songwriters. U keep the tonic in the bass and add an E(6th), so D/Bflat/D/E which makes it sound so haunting because there is now also a tritone(Bflat to E) and a major second(D to E) in the mix. Very famous examples are: Queen: You're my best friend Beatles: Till there was you Basicly every jazz standard Love theme from Gershwin's: An american in paris And many many more. It is literaly everywhere. Keep a look out for this awesome chord construction it will change your entire life. Ps: if u can find the 3 different mol-dur's in stella by starlight, u know u understand what the mol-dur is!

@@iqless7313 I meant that the chord the vid is about is a minor G(4) over D (tonic) chord. The E is a major 6th interval from the G, so thats why i called it the 6th. Rereading my earlier comment i do see that it wassnt very clear. Important thing is that u can look at this chord as a minor 4th chord with the tonic in the bass (mol-dur progression) if you want to put it in any harmonic context.

What’s a picard chord?
@roberthart4224
@roberthart4224 Жыл бұрын
This isn't a picardy chord at all. A picardy chord (actually called "picardy third") is a chord that is used at the end of a piece of music. The said piece is in a minor key and ends on the root (but in a major key, not minor) It's typically heard in medievil music and baroque era music. Totally different to what you are saying about the 4th chord. I understand the logic, but it's not the same context. Deam Theater's song's (such as "misunderstood") uses a chord progression: Major Root and a minor 4th. Which is what you are trying to explain. This is simply just a chord progression with a phyrgian or Mixolydian b6 feel. From what I hear on Misunderstood, I think it is Mixlydian b6, due to the notes in the melody and chords thereafter...

Or augmented chord.
@fredgoh
@fredgoh 2 жыл бұрын
@@abespain actually such chords will appear as different name or movement to various individual depending on his understanding of music theory and perception. And no one is wrong about it (eg how Richard consider the chords as a b9 chord while it is a raised 5 (augmented chord). But he is probably more technically correct as the music is moving backward. If Richard and me played the same thing as Marco, they will have different flavour due to the way we look and feel the chords. There is a passing G note happening as such Richard came out with Gm 6/9. For me I may even try to use a G diminished. So yah.....no one way of looking at music. Go gi e it a try.
@abespain
@abespain 2 жыл бұрын
@@fredgoh I dont hear any g note though, looking at the tab I also dont see one. I understand the movement, it works if you grab the g from the low e (that would give you G. D, Bd, D, E, so Gm6 or the iv). I guess my point is; where are people getting a G from.
@fredgoh
@fredgoh 2 жыл бұрын
@@abespain at about 12 secs that is the first G note he pressed (3rd string 3rd fret and 3rd fret 1st string). Depend on who u speak to, some may interpret this as Gm /D or whatever names / extention u want to call it. Unless he is having alternate tuning, that should be a G note at 12 sec. U can practise with Marco's tab, it is very good exercise. Hope it help.

@@jayminlashkarimusic822 both are different bhai, you simply cannot compare or judge. Indian music doesn't have the concept of harmony at all it is limited to one scale. Sa never changes aka scale never changes. while in western music the rules and modes(ragas) of scales are not as prominent and vivid as Indian music and they don't replicate gayaki ang as much as indian music , neither they have the use of sympathetic strings . You simply cannot compare there have been excellent musicians in western music and Indian music who have escalated the standard of music in general. It is utterly Foolish to compare two different styles of music. A good musician will learn from both and a legend will use both to create even better music like Ustad Zakir Hussain and john mclaughlin.

Aesroix Code that is just Dsus2(b6) which means dha is komal. it sounds great but not at all like a raga it takes a lot more than throwing a flat sixth to sound like any raag. A raag is identified by it's pakad which is a certain arrangement of selected notes within a raag. Two raags might have same notes but because of the way they move and their pakad they feel totally different. Here this man is playing chords and in Indian music there is absolutely no concept of chord there is a tanpura to support melody and melody projects a raaga. This chord is very beautiful but no this arrangement doesn't sound like a raga.

It’s the transition from major chords to minor chords back to major chords that your brain recognizes as a pattern of dissonance back into harmony which gives your brain a feeling of satisfaction. That cognitive dissonance creates and triggers emotions that we wouldn’t otherwise feel which makes minor chords and music itself so beautiful and intriguing as an art!

Kinda. It's usually based on the key. Minor chords generally sound sad, but it all depends on the other chords and notes played, and in what order, if it's done correctly, etc. A lot goes into giving sounds a certain emotional quality. I'd highly recommend checking out some music theory videos. Extremely fascinating.

It’s the minor iv chord in a major key, which uses the nondiatonic minor 6th, or as Adam Neely calls it, the nostalgia note. Very easy to use and very effective, most powerful when proceeded by the major IV chord because of the change in the third of the chord. TL;DR iv chord with flat 3rd

Yes, a chord and the extensions can be powerful. But I think it's the relationship to the other chords that gives it the true power. A lot like a player on a team...with one team that player is good at best. On another team the player becomes a super 🌟.
