This is the Pan Island Expressway of Singapore. Connecting a majority of the island and running at a distance of 42.8 km. And at a moment's notice, the entire island of Singapore could be militarized. Making it the most dangerous island on the planet. So how did Singapore go from a tiny island nation to the most insane military-powered island on earth?

To put it more accurately we do not have any natural resources and there isn't a treasure chest enticing any countries to invade us. We can argue that it's location is quite strategic as a port city, but with the aftermath of war and without a good government, there is little benefit to invade and conqueror Singapore notwithstanding other numerous reasons. Though, our neighbors have not always been logical so we must always be prepared for war.

The British in Malaya was led by an incompetent Wussy named General Percival. McArthur & Percival both lost battles one lost Philippines the other lost Malaya & Singapore. But McArthur bounched back while Percival did not. I have no idea what was in Percival brains, the British & commonwealth forces had 80,000 troops while the japs only had 30,000. Yamashita himself admitted his campaign was all a Bluff as he was running low on supplies & munitions. Had Percival not surrender & persist, the British , Australians & Indians under his command would have been spared the horrible fate. You know Japs treat surrendering soldiers worse than dogs.

Because Singapore is so urbanised, Urban warfare would be a necessary element in training. However, as noted in the video, Singapore lacks Strategic Depth. So if the fight is brought onto Singapore's shores, we would have already lost. It is jus a matter of time. Strategically, the SAF intends to fight on other shores and in arenas other than Singapore soil. The error in WW2, was to allow the Japanese to reach Singapore's northern shores and cross into Singapore island. They should have been stopped before they reached Johor (Peninsula Malaysia's southernmost state.), and the fight should have been contained within the peninsula. Whether this was possible is another question. Once the Japanese reached Singapore, it was simply a matter of time. The strategic lesson from that is, we cannot let the fight come to Singapore Island. Hence our focus on our RSAF (partly because of strategic issues. Partly because we are tutored by the US who emphasise Air Superiority as a military doctrine). A superior air force allows us to prosecute any war far from Singapore's shores if necessary. Enemy forces coming from the North? the Air force can engaged them while they are far from Singapore. Naval forces in the South? Our Air and Naval forces can intercept (at this stage our Naval Assets are not as fully formed as our Air Force), but still formidable. And we have invested in Submarines. ) before they get within range of Singapore. The point of our military is to protect Singapore. Not turn Singapore into a battleground.

Singapore has learned from its past! How admirable and unusual! There may come a point (If it has not already arrived) where Singapore could (In effect) "export" Its know-how and experience in building itself up as much as it might do with any other weapon system made in Singapore. Knowledge and experience is power, and fewer people seem to understand that these days!

Singapore is a tiny country surrounded by much larger countries. Doesn't take much to figure out that we need to get as militarised as economically possible. I myself served 2.5 years in the Singapore army. When I enlisted, the US had just been defeated by the Vietnamese communists, and there was a real fear that neighbouring countries would be next. Even without the communist threat, we are still a small country and no one will fight for us if we don't fight for ourselves.

Sorry, but within the first minute of the video there were a number of factual errors which leads me to question the veracity of the rest of this video's research. Firstly, the dotted lines of the map show a chunk of Malaysia being drawn in to Singapore. Instead, the boundaries lie at the strait of johor, any land past the strait belongs to Malaysia, and that includes that chunk of land lying within the dotted lines. Second, the PIE is NOT used as a runway. The strip of road beside Tengah airbase can be and has been operationalised as a runway, where lampposts were removed, taxiways opened, and vipers have taken off and landed on that strip. But NOT the rest of PIE. Third, Singapore does NOT have an alliance with either the USA or China. We may strive to remain on friendly terms, we may have strategic and military partnerships with the USA, but do NOT have a military alliance inked with either China or the USA. For reference, I'm a Singaporean. I served.

To say Singapore is untouchable is being sensational. Militarily, it's not untouchable as the military option has limitations. The point of military option as a last resort is to present a significant cost to any invader. While having good defense relations with allies also help, the best defense is still good neighbourliness and diplomacy, which SG has assiduously cultivated at Gov to gov and people to people levels within the Asean context. Singapore economy is also much integrated with its for food, energy, supply chains and resources. This interdependence and mutual respect make any differences in opinion manageable for the common good of all.

The Brits were really naive during WWII. If Japan were to attack from the south, Singapore being an island with the nearest land south of it so far away, everybody would know days in advance if an attack was coming from the south. You'd have time to move defence forces to the southern coastline to prepare for the attack. The north, however, would have been a more logical choice. Japan is situated far to the north of Singapore. It attacked China, then moved south towards Thailand. It's only logical that they would continue southwards into Malaysia and ultimately, Singapore. Why launch troop transports into the sea from Japan or China and sail them towards Singapore when taking the land route is less risky and besides, you still need to conquer the land between China and Singapore. So even with the attack from the south, Japan would subsequently still need to go northwards to take Malaysia and Thailand, while leaving it's rear open to retaliation from Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.

Naive ? More than that. The Japanese was already in the North to start with. Actually an Australian soldier swam across the causeway to Johor Baru, Malaya and confirmed that an attack will be from the North West as he saw the preparations done but the British dismissed him and the information. When the Japanese started their attack, only Australian and poorly armed local militias defended the North West. At the initial attack, the British also dismissed that as a diversion until it was too late. Who would have guessed that the attack will come from there as it is also the narrowest sea crossing to Singapore, right? The whole British army was 5 times more than the Japanese and had more army supplies and assets which the Japanese put to good use later. The "funny" thing is that the British really believed in their own fake training programs ( those from that era will know that these as part of their training, which is just dismissed your enemies as fakes ) - This was actually told that the Japanese are short and nerdy, weak body, cross eyed with specs and could not shoot straight ( sound familiar?? ). Read the experiences of the young Australian soldiers landing in Singapore when the Japanese already occupied Singapore and when somebody forget to tell them when they were at sea. Not to mentioned that at the first air strike, the whole Singapore was lighted and lights could not be turned off as only one British guy has the key to do so and he was too busy at the theatre. Not to learn is to invite disaster.

There was also a bombing in Singapore (Macdonald House) in 1965. Many of our policies were influenced by our history. E.g. why Malays are generally put into civil defence roles (SCDF, Police) and not active combat roles (Guards, Commandos). 2:10 Singapore was not under British rule until 1965, only until 1963 as it had merged with Malaysia. In 1965, Singapore was expelled from Malaysia and thus became an independent nation. 2:42 Singapore was already designed by the British to have strong anti-ship defences. Fort Siloso is proof of such attempts to protect against attacks from sea. However, it was not seriously considered by the British prior to WW2 that the Malaysian peninsula would be lost.

Is this an offensive or defensive armed force? I can understand the AF having an offensive capability. However, if a land invasion occurs, it's going to be urban warfare. The navy...?
@306316
@306316 10 күн бұрын
The SAF is built with offence in mind, if war ever broke out the army is required to fully mobilise within a day. Of course any land war will only possibly be against Malaysia, thats an open secret. The big picture strategy will be to advance straight into Johor to secure water sources and strategic depth and then build bridges and supply lines across the strait of Johor to hold the front and let the big wigs decide on advancing further or hopefully peace. Any Urban warfare will be on the Johor side, although the government will likely come to a deal with the Sultan of Johor on some form of cease fire where we leave the city and people alone while they help mediate with the government in KL. And regularly, during our(Singapore's) national day parade there is a "custom" where Malaysia would also organise their own military exercise around the same period. During times like this the SAF is alway on high alert. A couple years back there was a full mobilisation with tanks lined up and ammunition drawn and ready to deploy, when one of the exercises got too heated and not enough communication went through between the top brass on both side. Can't give much context on what the navy does, you can guess i'm army side. But they fight piracy and probably prevent reinforcements from the Borneo side of Malaysia if things get hot. Regardless all parts of the military usually see more action in humanitarian missions than actually military conflict.

@@daveevad3524 if an oct 7-like israeli attack happens on sg do you think our people can handle it? What about low cost drone swarms? Being able to treat wounds in peace time is one thing. How about war time? As it stands, the nature of warfare is changing ie 5G war, and we only hit 3G, by 2021, on the back of an already calculated move to modernize the infantry to motorisation. Now do you think its realistic to rely on a once a year conscript force to keep up with the pace of change? Having more cycles wont make the difference when you need dedicated time and effort to the craft out the profession of soldiering. Fwiw, our entire existence and right to exist/ ability to enforce it depends on america selling us advanced weapons and ALLOW us to keep ahead of our neighbours ah. Its a privellege that can be easily threatened especially amid geopolitical rivalry between china and usa. Ie, if philippines or malaysia offer to counter china for america like ukraine to russia, they will get advanced weapons too ya? Btw sg army is hardly impressive. The army this part of the world that really gets the top gear are the aussies, cuz they are anglosaxxon and white. They will be bringing their us made nuclear powered submarines to our region soon, with their f35s and japans'. The saf is nothing more than a low quality puppet show/ joke and the mercy of others.
