Lol he assumes that people want to commit the crimes he has listed as crimes, which can be largely correct. He assumes the worst in people. That’s what strict people do and it often has the opposite impact of what they want to achieve because no one accepts being controlled. If it hasn’t backfired it’s because he’s not as strict as you think or because he has given certain important freedoms to people. Unlike most south asian or Middle Eastern countries/leaders who often have strict leaders but lack GDP growth, discipline and are often corrupt.

I’ve lived long enough to see the complete transformation of this island nation into a ‘metropolis’ (quoting Mr Lee’s own words). Words cannot describe how thankful we are to him and his self-sacrificing team. May our new generation remember this - that our country is just a small island not endowed with any natural resource and the only resource we have is our people. Lest we slip into complacency and fail to sustain the high standards set by our predecessors, we must continue to uphold the grit and drive of our pioneers.

One of LKY’s greatest fears for Singapore was the complacency of the people - when people assume that Singapore’s battle for survival is assured, and that they can slacken on the pursuit of good governance. LKY was right. I am often astonished by how so many Singaporeans are constantly and unreasonably dissatisfied with their lives in SG. If one were to survey all the governments that exist throughout the world (past and present), one must admit - when it comes to good governance, it doesn’t get much better than PAP. Many Singaporeans seem to think that European countries or Australia are good examples for Singapore to follow. Remember that unlike these countries, Singapore has no resources, has a tiny population, tiny geography, a perilous neighbourhood. What works for such greatly advantaged countries cannot be blindly assumed to work for SG. On the contrary, many of these countries want to learn from SG (in other words, learn from PAP). Singaporeans need to realise that the good path (not necessarily the new path) is the way to their prosperity. Don’t spill the cup that you have inherited from LKY.

@@michaelsamuel9917 I honestly do not believe Mr. LKY would be that stupid to challenge the Malay rulers in their faces by saying "Chinese will run Malaya" in a country that's ethically never dominated by the Chinese in history. Also, he went to Cambridge with the Tunku. They're good friends! I'm not sure where you read about that story. If you can provide me with the resource of where you read that, that'll be most appreciated. It's just something a smart person won't do, you have to use your common sense & judgement when you read & think if it's logical & practical. Because lots of things are not true even from large media like CNN & WSJ. You should know better than this nowadays. Let me help you think a bit since you lack the logical deep thinking ability: 1. What benefit would it bring to Mr. LKY & Singapore by making such a provocation at that time before the split? 2. The Chinese communist party existed before Singapore joined Malay, if you read Mr. LKY's memoirs, you'd know the communist were against this union. Mr. LKY joined in order to stop communism from spreading in Singapore. It's a fact that the communists were killing Malays, even in Singapore, but it does not erase that fact of Malay top rulers started the 1964 & 1969 riots of purging non Communist local Chinese in Singapore & KL? Do you know that part of history? Those were civilians, average commoners like people you & me, not Communist guerilla fighters in the jungles... So please tell me your reasoning process. It's not that I don't read books, I'm well read in history & non fiction. Your demeaning attitude & lack of common sense of boosting the Malay local protectionism & racism against other minority policy is most disgusting & biased. I think you are the one that should read Mr. LKY's books to clear up your mind & views of the world in order to gain a more subjective understanding of the world history. You can NOT blame the Brits for playing amongst different races to achieve the max result for its Empire's benefit during colonial ages. That's not an excuse or reason for Malay top rulers to act racial discrimination & purge of the Chinese population at that time. After all, it's a smart strategy implemented by the Brits around the world, look at the middle east & africa, similar patterns, which still causing conflicts & wars lasting till this day. This strategy is called "帝王之术" by the ancient Chinese, "The Way to Rule of the Emperor", using the conflicts amongst the lower classes to firmly grasp concentrated power by the top, which Mao played to perfection & killed 40 millions of his own people so that he could be emperor for decades, no one dared to challenged him. How many non-Communist Chinese died under this strategy & racial riots/purge played by the Malay royal ruling class? Do you have the #s? Feel free to check Wiki, I did. Chinese death in hundreds but Malays death only in handful, because the police were ordered by the gov't not to help/protect the minority Chinese, it's an act of encouraging killing its own citizen... You see the big picture now?

In my 30s, finally a grown up with a mortgage and kid, a good job (representing Singapore) and residing overseas, I began to consolidate my experiences, the country's historical legacy, its economic challenges, and sociopolitical trajectory. And I realised how absolutely vital LKY had been and how great leadership -- in an entire government -- is the indispensable rock of any nation. My son is growing up in Europe, and will never know the legacy of his birth country and how it stands in stark contrast to the malaise and chaos currently besetting the continent. I'm now 45, and I have transformed my beliefs and identity too (as LKY mentioned in his 80th birthday speech in the video). I have a better understanding of Singapore's and my place in the world, and I'm glad that I am now giving back to my birth country in a small way. My only hope is that my son will one day realise how lucky he was to have been a Singaporean and to have ties -- no matter how weak -- to this fascinating and remarkable nation.

22 Feb 2024 Never in the modern era of human endeavour have so many owed so much to one man, who strove not for gold, glory, or self, but for others and his beloved country, Singapore. In one monumental stride, he transformed a swampland from 3rd world to 1st, the impossible to reality, a feat unparalleled, a miracle in the eyes of many. World leaders from nations big and small came to him for his insights. And what they garnered from him made the world a better, peaceful, and safer place to live to a greater extent. For me, the one trait of his character I truly admired was his stance against corruption. It stood out like a beacon to people in countries with a fervent hope that their leaders would emulate. And I believe it impacted many of them not to take the path of the least resistance, but to walk tall and straight and not to meander from doing what's right.To even say he was a man in a million holds no justice. Aptly put, he was someone from out of this world.

One thing that really stand out watching his speeches, is that he didn't gave, inspirational, historical speeches during his leadership, but he lead consistently. His speeches were always sharing a vision, motivating his people, calling them to service the nation. Stark difference from today's West leaders, who are more worried to say how great they are, the big things he's doing...

Thank you for all you have done Mr Lee. I am currently in my 20s and did not truly understand how monumental he was when i was younger. For all the complaints my generation may have, I hope we realise how fortunate we have been to be born into a country so efficient and technocratic - a country our forefathers have so painstakingly built. I have lived overseas and while there are downsides to living here, I still love Singapore dearly.
@thinkpadx60 Жыл бұрын
what downsides? we have the best of everything to live and ample opportunities for all who are willing
@PJFrancis Жыл бұрын
@@thinkpadx60 I think we can be open minded and be honest on what he meant. We can recognize that overseas can offer things Singapore can't. I've also lived overseas for a few years, and I still think Singapore is the best on what I think is impt (safety etc). however, Singapore is also limited due to its small size, thru no fault of its own. some examples I prefer overseas are house choices, cars, scenery, pace of life to name a few. so it really depends on what you feel is more suited and impt to yourself. no right and wrong here.

The funeral of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew in 2015 attracted a large crowd of mourners, with estimates suggesting 0.5 million people visited the coffin to pay their respects and I was one of them. This was a testament to the immense respect and admiration that Ministor Mentor Lee was held in by the people of Singapore and beyond, as well as his legacy as a visionary leader who transformed the country into a modern, prosperous nation. We as Singaporeans are forever grateful to him and his team for what they have done for our country.

10:00 This speech made me tear up. You could see the sheer determination and optimism Mr Lee had in his eyes. He knew it was a painful journey, he knew it would be long and arduous, but he never stopped believing in us. He had such high confidence and belief in all of us, and he never ever stopped working towards achieving greater heights, and it was because of his beliefs in us.

LKY was a visionary. LHL is an idiot. LKY brought Singapore from 3rd world to first world economic status. LHL is holding Singapore back with economic stagnation. LKY served the interest of Singaporeans. LHL makes Singaporeans serve him. When LKY passed away, millions of Singaporeans lined the streets to send him off. When LHL passes away, millions of Singaporeans will turn their back against his coffin. Present day PAP is not like when it was founded by LKY. Do not trust PAP. Do not vote PAP.

Spoken with such confidence and conviction. Quote, unquote “I’m calculating not in terms of the next election. I am calculating in terms of the Next Generation in terms of the next hundred years, in terms of Eternity and the next thousand years we will be here” Good thing he had a bunch of “madmen” who went on this path with him! 🎉 #respect to our forefathers! #thesteelinourpeople! #wasnt just guts on our part but the total population refused to be cowered

A man like him only born in a thousand of years. When I was studying in Singapore , I remember our lecturer said he even used his own money to build a road from airport to The Istana and Parliament House. Singapore is rhetorical place where I was able to learn Mandarin and Hokkien as a half Chinese.
