Tom I gotta say watching your video quality go up and up over the past year has been amazing. Its not just the video quality its the comfort you have on camera, the way things are filmed, how clear you make your points. Also I am liking the bits of comedy you are adding. Keep it up man!

How hard is the kit version to get assembled right. Is it worth it to just buy the assembled I like building kits but need the printer to work well too :)
@fing_az
@fing_az 6 жыл бұрын
outnumbered it's a lengthy build process (allow for about 7-8hrs if it's your first build), but all steps are very clearly laid out, and all parts very well designed. Any parts which might trip you up are very well highlighted in the documentation. The steps are broken down into chapters, to provide logical 'sections' of the build, parts and fixings are bagged together into the sections and clearly labelled. If you don't mind the time it takes to build, there's no reason to not go for the kit 👍it also helps with understanding how it works, and a huge feeling of accomplishment when you get it done! Have fun! PS. I recommend using the online version of the build documentation, as there are comments on the steps which often answer questions you might have!

LOL good thing I wasn't the only one to assume the print was finished only to see the MK3 still chugging away. The fan jamming detection already saved my machine when some stray filament got into the low torque noctua.

I agree with what you say here..... My first 3d printer was a HICTOP 3dp11. Tell you what, at first, I enjoyed trying to figure out its quarks and fixing them..... over the months, I just got TIRED of dealing with it.... I loathed the idea of using it. Its been collecting dust for over 2 years..... Well, I finally just decided to buy the Original Prusa MK3..... looking forward to something that "Just works".

Best and most extensive review of the MK3 I’ve seen. I did notice you got a printed copy of the assembly manual. My kit only came with the user manual. This being said, they have an excellent online version that’s constantly being updated due to the input from builders. I think the 8 bit board has hit its limits and Prusa would likely have to switch to a 32 bit for any additional features / models.

Mine should finally be shipping to me shortly after ordering in November. Of course, I actually bought it to use in conjunction with the multi material upgrade, and only God knows when that will ship. I'm glad to see that Prusa is so busy, though. It just goes to show that you can be open source and still make a profit from your design efforts. Hopefully for his next printer he will finally see the value in injection molding and not waste so much time messing with printer farms. I think he has the volume to justify the mold expense now.

Hey Thomas, I'm sorry for going off topic, but I have a question/theory. I've noticed a lot of oilers for the filament prior to hitting the extruder mechanism. So... my thoughts are, filament in a drybox, add in an foam oiler BEFORE leaving the drybox, then another foam cleaning setup just before it hits the actual hot end, (likely not viable on bowden). My premises for using an oiler before it leaves the drybox, works under the assumption that it would protect exposed filament out side the box with a thin layer of oil on the filament. It *might* work, I think it's kind of like oiling a knife to protect it from exposure to air and moisture. Again I apologize for hijacking this thread, I don't know any other makers personally to bounce this idea from.

Great review! All the stuff the Prusa team did with the MK3 really makes me wonder what innovations their next version will bring to the table. The fact that they are open source is fantastic, since all other manufacturers can benefit from the MK3, resulting in pushing the industry forward. Gotta love Prusa! 😄

Even if you can not afford to buy this great printer, you will get the benefits of it as all the other printer manufactures will be forced to play catch up and put in these new features. So the cheaper China printers will very soon have all the features. They were so fast to add the power loss resume and filament run out sensors to the low end machines. I love my MK3 now that it has the latest firmware update. Seems to be working so perfectly.

uh i think you might be wrong, some of the features were implemented before prusa did. prusa has a lot of hype behind it. its 2018 and they still want to use that old small screen? they use cheap bearings and rods the list could go on.

Out of the 3 printers i own (prusa mk2, creality cr-8 and bibo 2) the bibo also has the best print quality, but it is shocking how quiet the mk3 is tho

It's easy to forget how innovative this printer was at its time. And even years later (when I bought mine) it was still the only printer on the market with all those features combined. Only 2-3 years ago a lot of printers did not have: - full metal hotend - direct extruder - dual z-axis motors - magnetic PEI sheets - filament runout sensor - ABL sensor And only the Prusa MK3S+ had all those features together.

Freaking love my MK3. Oddly enough my first print didn't come out real nice because the crash detection caused a layer shift (which it's supposed to prevent) that was weeks ago so it is probably fixed. Silent mode in a dorm room is pretty awesome

I ordered assembled version on release day, received in middle of December. I have not experienced any issues apart from filament loading "is filament clear" issue. Granted this is my first 3d printer and I have stuck to PLA. Fan for my custom built enclosure is louder than the printer. Not only did it come with a great manual but also quality tools. I was up and printing in minutes - brilliant!

Good review. I was most interested in how quiet this printer is so that it could be put in an office and have it run without it being a distraction. After seeing a few other reviews, I am finally satisfied with this sound comparison. Other videos just didn't have the depth or fidelity to accurately compare the perceived decibels. Combined with an enclosure, it can be quite the non-invasive spectacle and look (and sound) quite professional.

That bed is definitely my favorite feature of the mk3. So much so that is just upgraded my 220x220 alu heater bed with neo magnets (150°C rating) and a 0.025" (0.635mm) sheet of 1095 spring steel. My first print last night, I flexed the bed and the part popped right off! No more shredding the blue tape with a putty knife!

I can't agree with Tom more.. I've got my Mk3 and I love it. I've not had any issues with mine so I can't fault it either. That said, the launch could have been a bit handled better and to be fair to PRUSA they are putting things right as soon as they find them. I'm looking forward to getting the textured steel sheet but more importantly looking forward to seeing what else this machine can deliver as it matures. This is my fourth 3D printer. So far it is the most accurate and most idiot proof machine that I've come across. It's a big thumbs up from me! :-)

I ended up getting the Creality due to its lower price and wanting something I could get running almost out of the box. However, if I had to do it over I might well get the Prusa as it has features like auto leveling and a flexible bed that I wish my machine had. I addition I think direct drive has advantages over the Bowden tube design. I don’t think one can go wrong getting this printer from what I’ve seen

Now that you mention it, it did have trouble printing straight out of the box. I was an early/late adopter of the Mk3 and waited for the PEI sheet, and I couldn't get it to print. Turns out, the sensor that actually detected the filament wasn't working. But, a patch and trouble shoot later, works like a complete dream. Even my UP Mini couldn't stack against it!

Thomas, great addition to your ongoing MK3 series. You have gotten me off the wall on buying one of these. I have the upgrade for the company's MK2S/MMU on order but I see enough improvement in print quality with this unit to justify the purchase. When it is delivered I can restore the MMU installation on the MK2S that I removed because of its more complicated and less reliable single material behavior.

The killer feature (powder coated bed) is still not available to order and still not shipping with kits. My filament sensor also overheated and melted the extruder housing (and then the bondtech slipped, trust me) - this little PCB simply should not be able to draw enough amps to hit 200C, so now I run without that, too as I cant trust it. The Mk3 can be great when they sort out the teething issues, but some of it's killer features just aren't ready yet.

Spot on review Tom! Got my MK3 from the first batch in early December. Even with the "beta" issues, it has been an incredible machine, blowing away my previous Maker Select v2! It is really hard to appreciate how quiet it is on a video, it is unbelievable. I have it in my office, and often don't realize it is still printing, while I had to wear headphones with the Maker Select. The removable sheet makes print retrieval trivial. I agree that there could be a more advanced solution to the Rpi Zero, but it is pretty slick and an improvement over hanging one externally. And holy cow is this thing fast! While the MK2s is still a decent machine in its own right, I think the extra cost of the MK3 is easily justified, and can't imagine stepping backward. I have had great luck with flexible TPU, and the MK3 prints PETG fantastically, it is my favorite material now.

Yes I agree that 32-bit is needed to improve user interfaces and leave overhead for advanced communications interfaces. While Marlin and Smoothieware are fantastic, their interfaces are a bit cryptic and still on 2x16 LCDs. Firmware could do so much more to help novice users with setup advice.

Dennis Fox Have you taken a look at Klipper? It is a new take on firmware. Basically, the 8bit chip gets relegated to just making precise timing pulses to run the stepper controllers while a faster box running Linus (like a Raspberry pi) does the gcode parsing and motion planning. Now you can run the UI on a full up computer instead of a little 16*2 LCD.

Jo is not lying, when I visit my brother who got my old wanhao i3 clone for Christmas. I can't believe how much more work it is to use. Something you forgot in your review are how good the slic3rs are in complimenting the mk3. For most non tricky prints I use prusa control because it is so quick and it is good for layer change multicolor prints. And slic3r prusa edition for tricky prints and variable layer height. You mentioned adding network control. Back when octoprint had issues I picked up a flashair SD card and it works perfect with the mk3 i can save directly to the printer by wifi and the printer controls are better, in my opinion, than octoprint.

Hi Thomas, thank you so much for this video. I found and sub'd to your channel yesterday through the MK2 review that's on the Prusa site. After watching that, and thinking, "wow, I want this printer!" I noticed it's 2 years old. I now watched this one which is more recent, and it helped me also understand what the MK2s is all about. This would be my first 3D printer. I intend to print TPU almost exclusively. I would likely order the kit version as I have no problems assembling it myself even if it's my first one. I'm pretty handy with electronics. At this point I guess I'm between the MK2S and MK3. I do like the idea of the flex bed... and the fact that it is now November... almost a year since the launch of the MK3 from looking at your video, so I'm sure all the kinks have been ironed out by now.

I have to say I do not completely agree with your point on the 8 bit CPU. I think the choice they did, to have a very simple system to control the printer, and delegate other features like network to another system is a great choice. Dealing with network, and especially wifi is not a simple thing. Nor is dealing with a full touch & color UI simple. The increased complexity of those inevitably leads to unpleasant things, ranging from boring slowness of the UI to reliability issue if some advanced features causes delays in commands sent to printer for exemple. I believe the Unix way of doing things is great in such situations : do one thing, but do it very well. So here, I'm very glad to have a simple, relyable embedded controller that perfectly deals with the control of the hardware, and an option to add another system (the raspberry PI Zero) to add valuable but non vital features, such as wifi and web UI.

This video finally convinced me to finally pull the trigger on a Prusa i3Mk3. I have two printers already, a Printrbot Simple Metal and a Printrbot Metal Plus. The Simple Metal is a tank, it just prints and prints and prints and the print quality is quite good. I have had very few issues with it in two years. The Metal Plus on the other hand is the opposite, it breaks down on a constant basis, it is loud, shaky and the print quality leaves something to be desired. I need to replace it with something with a larger print area and I think the Prusa will fit the bill. Im so frustrated by the Metal Plus that I may take it out to the backyard once the Prusa arrives and teach it a lesson.

Are you talking about an MK3? The replacement spring sheets are $25-30, not "hundreds", and the replacement PEI sheets are less than $10 (since it's unlikely the actual spring sheet itself would be damaged). Not only that, you can easily print PETG on PEI without damaging the surface simply by making sure the bed is properly cleaned (with Windex or some other window cleaner) and that your first layer is not smashed into the surface. His statement was very misleading - a lot of people print PETG on PEI without destroying anything. He should edit that statement out of the review.

@@darkdexterminate Ah, makes sense. Thought you were having quality errors! Anyways, this stacks up real well to most of the printers on the market. I personally think it is the best printer for a variety of reasons, but before I list them I will answer your question: If all you are printing is minifigures, it may be better to go with a resin printer, as they are better quality. However then you have to manage fumes and run into a small buildplate. So for printing minifigures on an FDM printer? It is amazing. Now heres why I recommend it. This thing is cheaper than an expensive printer but outperforms many. It has very fine tuned steppers which make it so that the prints are extremely accurate, and with enough tuning, prints look too perfect to be true. It also has good layer height, so if that is needed for printing minifigures, get it. TL;DR this printer has better looking prints than anything cheaper than it, but it offers the same performance as a more expensive one from my experience. It is also very beginner friendly

I’ve owned every Original Prusa i3 since the mk1 and am excited to build my mk3 this weekend. No other 3d printing company has paved the path like prusa has. Ordering anything else would have been a mistake.

Having just bought my Ender 3 for 175.00 USD and looking forward to learning how to use it I am looking forward to the point where I can easily justify spending 800.00 USD on a Prusa. I would love to be able to put my money into the Prusa company. They seem to support the kind of thinking I admire. But, first things first, learn how to do it on what I got and then upgrade as I can both afford and justify it. Thanks for the review.

Hey Thanks for the great review! I watched this, did some more research, and made my decision to order the PRUSA I3 MK3 kit! You made solid points that were just hard to argue with. I have a few Ultimakers in my shop at work and they lack some of the key features this printer has and they easily cost 2x!

I agree with your comments on the MkIIS, and that was my thinking when I bought the MkIIs kit for 599 in early Dec. 2017 (after the MkIII came out). My MkIIs is a great printer and prints really well. The only down side was the frustration with squaring the threaded rod frame (my fault, I just had to get it "Perpendicular"). If I had to do it all over again I would probably spend another 150 and get the MkIII kit for $750. I suspect that the extruded aluminum frame on the MkIII would have been much easier to deal with.

I just fell in love.. again :) Great review Thom. Too bad the Prusa company is growing too fast for their own good. For instance I'm currently in a dispute because they didn’t reply to my emails in almost 1.5 months and shipped me something after I canceled. So just be careful buying from Prusa. The printers are amazing and Joseph seems like a fantastic guy!

Hi Thomas, - I received my assembled MK3 two days ago. It was late so I waited until yesterday morning to set it up. I started out by calibrating the Z just in case. Then I printed the whistle and that went OK. Then I loaded my own project on my previous MK2 SD Card. When I went to insert it - it would not go in more that about 25%. I jiggled it around for several seconds and it finally went in. It printed a first layer 14 minute test and it looked good. My second attempt to insert the SD Card I had the same problem. It seemed to be blocked in the SD Card Slot Connector at about 25% insertion. After a lot of jiggering and retrying I finally got it in. After about an hour of a 8 hour project I check back and the first layer look awful and the Extruder was at the right front corner of the bed with a message on the LCD "Something about change the Filament" I then had a message to remove Filament. I could not remove it. IT WAS JAMMED. I heated the Nozzle to 245 degrees but still could not pull it out. My initial experience with an assembled Prusa has not been good. I might add that almost 2 years ago I assembled a Prusa MK2 Kit and loved that machine. I sure wish Prusa had a US distributor.

I am one of those silly people that prefer the audio of the steppers :P The PEI powder coated spring steel plate is something that I hope that will be something that will be mass manufactured and easily obtainable for clones or other printer setups. But, really the only the only things that need changing, is a 32bit controller. This will easily enable the use of thumb drives on the remote displays, a better remote display with touch, though this is debatable as you can just use OctoPrint on a Raspberry PI.

I got my MK3 kit beginning of December, no installation manual in mine . . . I share some worries with you: - There are some issues discussed in the forum about bad design decisions - Printing with flex materials is pretty nasty, according to my analysis it's due to the gap between bondtech and hotend. - The software/firmware really needs some tweaking On the other side I love it, the removable bed is just great and the auto filament load with the sensor just eases things (even though it could ask for preheating instead of warning - just another software thing). Bottom line I love it with some flaws :)

The i3 is forever my favorite design, specifically for its economy, openness, and accessibility, which are second-to-none. I cherish my self-sourced i3, even as I'm constantly rebuilding it. On the processor front… Absolutely, the AVR platform still has a lot of life left in it, with many firmware optimizations still possible. The place where AVR falls down is in trying to support Deltabots with 32x micro-stepping and a graphical display. The otherwise snappy AVR processor simply can't keep up with that kind of demand, and Marlin will actually trigger the watchdog timer and reboot (though we're looking to eliminate that outmoded drastic response). For a Deltabot you have to either back your stepper drivers down to 16x micro-stepping, replace the graphical display with a character LCD, or slow print speed way down. But for Cartesians -and frankly any machine with Trinamic stepper drivers- the 16MHz AVR processor can readily keep up with the steps-per-second demand, even at faster print speeds. It's a really amazing little architecture, and makes the most of every cycle.

The AVR has been with us since the PlayStation was the hottest console around. To say you don't need anything more ignores exactly how much things have advanced. It was awesome in 1997, but is horribly underpowered for most 3D printers. Ignoring the slow clock speed, the CPU is severely limited in RAM, and has only very basic peripherals. Even something as simple as Ethernet requires an external MAC IC be added. Prusa is not doing themselves any favors by using a 4 line character display and knob interface. This arrangement is very tedious to use, and likely costs more than a small Color graphic touchscreen LCD.

Don't misunderstand my point. As one of the leads on Marlin development, I'm well aware of the limitations of AVR, which is why we're so keen to get our porting work to 32-bit platforms completed. I was addressing whether these processors can keep up with the needs of pushing plastic out for several days reliably and with reasonable speed, and they most certainly can, especially in a Cartesian arrangement. If users feel they want or need more, AVR can also integrate Wifi without any greater strain than it manages USB-serial, and there are other ways to augment the electronics and take load off the MCU without going for the full 32-bit board. For example, you can use a Nextion touch display, which takes even *more* load off the MCU. For one of my clients, we paired two RAMPS-derived boards together with a custom Marlin to drive a single machine, communicating through I2C for half the cost of single 32-bit board. The AVR platform deserves praise, not derision, for remaining viable and relevant to this day.

Speaking as someone who has been programming AVRs (and enjoying them) since before there existed a C compiler for them, I can deride Atmel for their failure to advance the architecture, and their bizarre pricing and peripheral combinations that have them more expensive than much more feature-rich microcontrollers from their competitors. When I critique them for being slow, I'm not just talking about the raw speed needed to print something, I mean simple things that are missing from the architecture that slow down everything else. For example, there are only a handful of devices with native USB. Yes, you can add a FTDI converter, but that's an extra cost and an extra part to source, and the transfer speed over USB-Serial is not impressive (i.e. laughable). Once again, you don't need a lot of USB speed to send some GCODE to the printer as it prints, but what about when you want to write GCODE to the SD card? It takes forever! This is compounded by the lack of an real SD interface on the AVR, limiting it to SPI 1-bit transfers to the card. I could go on. Don't misunderstand me: I promoted AVR for years back in the day when everyone was drooling of the godawful PIC (Ironic that Microchip now owns AVR) they were awesome for quite a while, but they stagnated and did not advance their design they way they should have. The only reason they are in 3D printers at all is thanks to the Arduino, and it's great to see so many new printers coming out with 32-bit cores, because the AVR was becoming a poor choice even back when the first Arduino was made. The AVR is still a very good choice for a lot of applications (especially the TinyAVR end of the spectrum), but not this one.

Indeed. We were a little surprised when Prusa didn't go for the SAM3X8E (Arduino "Due") as the heart of this machine. I'm gratified to hear that there are at least two developers working on an "Einsy" variant with the more powerful core.

there are about 50 different solutions that people have come up with, i'm using the original feet with little locks that hold the push in feet like a champ. some people have printed out their own feet designs that you have to take and end plate off to insert. take a look in the forums or thingiverse. It is only still a problem if you haven't looked. Also, who moves their printer that much. once you get it in place, how often do you move it?
