this song really feels like she's sitting in a writing session, tryin to end her vent album, only to realize, amazingly, she's not as angry, sad, or frustrated anymore... stuff can still be shit, but... she got some of it out.. and that made things better.

Yeah, my interpretation was mostly pretty similar. In my view, the first 3 are written from the perspectives of being 'successful' but still being susceptible to particular negative emotional states (to take a stab, Wanting Getting Wanting = being 'successful' but not satisfied with success, Take the Bait = being 'successful' but still getting frustrated by the same old internet bullshit, Dark hour = being 'successful' but still having depression issues, though I could see other interpretations for all 3), but at least the way I read the lyrics, even from those places of emotion she never seriously talks about giving it up or stopping. That's the main place I diverge from most of the analyses I've seen of the first 3 tracks, they all tend to paint a much darker picture than I think is warranted. And it's understandable, because any of them on their own with no other context are pretty negative, and it's not unreasonable to then wonder if she's close to or on the verge of giving up something. But because she (purposely, I'd have to imagine) never outright talks about giving in to despair and losing her motivation, that makes space for Fake Ass Gold to recontextualize the first 3 tracks. They can all be all real feelings about real struggles, but that doesn't mean she can't win against them, and Fake Ass Gold is her explanation of why she can feel those but still keep going. In this interpretation, she's sort of zooming out, looking at the whole road and not just particular bumps in it, like the first 3 songs topics. Reevaluating her trajectory, reflecting on the struggles of starting out and mistakes she made along the way, and talking about herself from a more holistic and healthy place than when she's deep in the emotions of the first 3 songs. That's why there's so much talk about math at the end of verses and 2+2 makes 5 at the choruses for Fake Ass Gold, it's her looking for a more objective perspective to evaluate where she's been, where she is, and where she's going. And her conclusion after running the calculation then is Verse 3: there will be mistakes, there will be days of sorrow, but there will be learning, there will be tomorrow. There aren't treasures just sitting out on the road waiting to be picked up, but she is able to make real treasure for herself by her own effort instead, and that's why the song is so much more optimistic by contrast.

I'm really happy she still makes content, this song in particular cheered me up! I've been doing alot of leadership work on this small community that I joined, I'll be honest, sometimes I really feel like I'm not cut out for this, bumping into problems, and unnecessary issues that we encounter with my team, it all felt so heavy, but not losing my way, faking it till I make it, and never giving up, I kept our group intact somehow. This will be the song I'll be playing whenever I'm feeling under the weather from here on out.

I'm very glad we were able to end on this (relatively) high note for the EP. As you said, this is the morning after. This song is a hype song of sorts, she's talking herself back up. Some other things I noticed and wanted to point out (obviously this is just my opinion) The ends of the verses end in, "it's math, you know?" I think this is her pointing out that she hasn't stumbled upon any mystic solution to her problems. Rather they're formulaic in nature, nothing special. Plug in numbers and you get a solution. So it might be a form of advice to others. Saying, "I haven't done anything grand here, anyone can do it." In the hook is the line, "You had your riches then you kissed 'em goodbye/ for lies and pyrite skies". I think this kind of goes with the whole, "the real treasure was the friends we made along the way" line of thinking. Here she's admonishing herself for the fact that she had this treasure (friends from pre-super fame days) and she threw them away for what turned out to be Fool's Gold: the fame and fortune of hitting it big. Now she's wizened up ("Ragged, reckless, what's your wisdom?") and knows what to pursue. The last line of the hook, "Don't let 'em tell you two and two makes five" is pretty simple, but I think this is just her saying, "Don't let people gaslight you into thinking you did something wrong". Not much to expand on that, just a simple bit of wisdom I think is being imparted there. Thanks for these break downs. I wish we coulda gotten a real analysis of "Take the Bait" but I get it that it's really hard to talk about that song without context, since it appears to be uniquely topical. I mean really, the whole EP is uniquely topical but at least the other songs seem to be easier to apply to a broader lens.

I agree so much with your reading that it's hard for me to add anything! I think fake ass gold is actually so crucial to the EP that the entire project wouldn't even exist without it. More so than not getting the point without it, it just *is* the point. There's no path forward otherwise. This EP speaks to me so hard. I'm still looking for my own fake ass gold, so to speak. But it's kind of nice to hear that there will always be a light up ahead, no matter how many tunnels you go through.
@saynay3022 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I love this song. I also saw it as the conclusion to the story being told over the course of the EP, where DDK is telling herself "look, maybe this fame isn't everything I dreamed it would be, but I will keep going forwards, and while it isn't what I was expecting, I still found something of value". I also really respect your sticking to the line you set yourself on what you will and wont talk about. It is a complicated subject, and I don't think there is one right answer, but you have clearly thought about it and come to one for you.
@MrTheholycole2 жыл бұрын
Really good job being respectful towards DDK. It really feels like this entire EP is closely tied to her personal life to the point I’m surprised she was allowed to make this. Good job not just outing her personal life her and still being able to talk about it.

Well, it is DemonDice, it is pretty unlikely that anyone *could* restrict her there(as long as it has nothing to do with the 'other persona', of course) Probably the reason she has very little activity as DDK is time constraints.

As fans we can only support her in some ways, but there is always a part where she has to rise again by herself. Expressing her struggles gives meaning to her music for both her and the listeners who can empathize. In the end this is what defines an artist for me, pouring what you feel in your art. It was probably a risky move to release this, but it was clearly a "must" for her. And I'm delighted that it was released and we can all appreciate it, and I hope this great analysis helps as many people as possible with that, because DD lyrics give so much room for interpretation and reflection.

Good video! I actually put a line from you’re an ace kid as my senior quote, and this song immediately stood out to me, i love it. I do have a personal different take on the nickels and dimes line. Instead of what you said, it being about giving up and it having to be living expense, i think it’s more akin to dice of a generation, saying that the nickels and dimes of motivation are being used as living expense because most of us have no other choice, our motivation HAS to go towards just getting to the next month. That’s just my take tho, as you said it’s full of different meanings. Also that’s a cool model!

For the life of me, I spent almost all of yesterday trying to think of what part of the chorus hook ("ragged, reckless, what's your wisdom?") was driving my brain into knots because it kept reminding me of something else that sounded exactly like it. And it hit me a few hours ago: Panic! At The Disco's 'Emperor's New Clothes' hook ("Finders keepers, losers weepers.") was what I was thinking of. What's especially interesting about that song and this is they both sort of have a similar theme: self-affirming, dusting yourself off and deciding to take ownership of both your success and your failures, and moving forward to something bigger (shutting up and getting happy, in the case of DDK). This EP was a journey and thensome. A kind of 'journey to the underworld and back to the light' of sorts.

Maybe I'm a paranoid loon, but imma religious weeb, so I'm curious what you think about my theory XD
@dicequeenDi2 жыл бұрын
Oh honestly I very much disagree lol. Ddk was noteably raised surrounded by religious folks. That sort of thing can make people either mega devout or atheistic. And most of her songs talk about becoming a God and becoming immortalized. God is certainly not a figure of reverence for her.

The feeling of the song was there when I first listened to it but you opened it up a lot more than I subconsciously understood. My heart sunk, bloated, beat, and thumped as the flashback hits in a few seconds. Years of my life went by in a blink and a tear for each moment. Love, hate, happiness and sorrow and all sorts of feelings rushing down my existence as I sit on my chair early in the morning. You made me remember the dream I broke myself as I rolled in tears from losing control of my life. Making me wish I held onto it... maybe I did, maybe I still do. I'm a crybaby inside and out and that's probably why I ran and hid, a lot have done so and will be doing so, but... You yanked some things I sealed tight. Making me think that maybe I should give it an honest to God second chance. Sorry for the long comment. All I wanted to say was, Thank you. They tend to get drawn to idols, vtuber, streamer cultures and the like because there are a lot of people that don't necessarily have dreams, but end up admiring those that do. The world is annoying with gray moralty and it's all constantly telling you dreams don't matter. Meanwhile the idols and vtubers exist with their dreams on their sleeve and people... need that kind of world. Where there ARE dreamers because a world without them is a dark, dark place. If it's not something you're opposed to, there's nothing wrong with living to help support those with dreams. Note I'm certainly biased as a streamer/vtuber myself so take my words with a grain of salt.

@@dicequeenDi Cambridge Dictionary; interpretation: an explanation or opinion of what something means. I suppose you can see how both apply. Regardless of flimsy definitions, when you compare this video to videos you find when you search for song analysis you'd find more about music theory. Whereas you make an opening comment about how this song sounds different than the others and goes very hard and then pretty much only talk about the song line by line and what is/could be ment by it (=> interpretation) or giving it context. I mean I was exited so hopefully see someone go a bit more into the music theory and was a lil disappointed not to find it here. But as I said, still a good video - even if I didn't find what I was looking for. You give a good personal touch of experience and context to the song. I'm not trying to be hating, I'm just saying that I think it's more a interpretation than analysis.

i do agree with your readings but you have to keep in mind DDK is way bigger than a lot of people know (if u know her job) and looking at the company and especially the sometimes extremely aggressive toxicity in the community (or against it), can be a lot to swallow . mot to mention the very strict rules. I very much so see why she would feel like she doesnt deserve it. you would too if you knew what kind of hate she's getting on some forums/comments

@@u.n.owen1260 Unspoken rule is to not mention the waitress job at applebitches, it can get you banned in the DD channel if you don't speak in code, if you know, leave specifics out, it's like that for a reason.

Well she basically says "I was a 4chan shitposter once but karma is a bitch and now 4chan shitposts about me" so don't feel too sorry.
