How do you check for hedgehogs in your garden? do you go to deep grass or piles of dry leaves and just move your hand (gently, of course) though it? We have a wild hedgehog in our garden that already comes around in the nights, but I am not sure where he sleeps. I suspect in another neighboring garden, but maybe not... thanks always for your great tips!

Hello Michelle, If I am honest, I kind of cheat, in that I have three cameras out every night, including one that captures any entering and exiting of the garden. So I generally know how many I have and where they are pretty much all the time. But if I was to check, I would do much as you are suggesting. For long grass you want to get as down deep as you can, gently checking all the way to ground level to ensure there's nothing hiding. The same would count for flower beds, and in particular any low shrubs that create natural domes. Never assume a mere pile of leaves is simply a pile of leaves, so always be very careful to first inspect them to make sure that lowly pile of leaves isn't sheltering a hedgehog. It's worth going slowly and methodically. I have had hedgehogs shelter in unusual places in the garden before and they can camouflage themselves very well.

How is Walter now?

Walter left the garden a few weeks after returning and went and blazed a trail beyond our fences. But he left healthy and happy and I hope he made a good life for himself in the neighbourhood around us
