Torches are some of the most important tools for glass blower. In lampworking, it is the primary source of heat and the type of torch you have can definitely effect the variety of work you are able to make.
A lot of new glass blowers often ask me what torch they should get. To make it easier for you, I put together a guide that has comparisons and feature reviews on some of the most popular torches you see in the studio!

Yeah, no glass blowers do it the real old-school way anymore, though. I'm talking about using an oil lamp with a massive wick and a blow tube to provide the extra oxygen, thus, making your torch. Lets see a real challenge!

Sometimes methods get inefficient and outdated.

@@DaleNorthEast Agreed... But that's what brings much greater appreciation to the advancements in the craft, if you've experienced it's technological predecessor.

@@deemushroomguy I do suppose you're right in that regard, I do stained glass for a living, mostly copper foil/tiffany stuff but do leaded stuff, jewellry, fused glass, i carve patterns/designs onto glass and more. I do enjoy doing the traditional methods. next for me is a torch!

@@DaleNorthEast Honestly, that sounds like a fun craft to dive into for a living. Cool stuff, dude! Torches are a great tool to have... Hung out with a glassblower in Colorado and I have a few friends who work with soft glass as well as one that does torch-work (borosilicate, or "hard" glass). I enjoy history quite a bit. Renaissance faires, etc.... which leads me to the common question of "Yeah, but how was it done 300-450 years or more ago?" Often, I'm presented with surprising and unknown solutions. The literal "blow" torch is credited with saving Europe's forests, as they were really getting into glass at the time. Glass production became quite popular then and previously only done with very hot (and inefficient) wood fires. I just grow plants. 😂 Have a great evening! ✌️

@@deemushroomguy love it, big fan of gardening and feeding the birds etc as well! I’m from the northeast of England, it’s early morning here but if you’re interested in history you may want to read about the glass factories of Sunderland and specifically “Hartley wood”, he was the last producer of mouthblown sheet glass in the UK and ceased production in 1997, I have a bunch of it stashed for something special some time lol, you may have heard of seaham, a lot of people come from the USA to look for the glass on the beach there that’s still washing up to this day, almost 100 years on - you have a great evening :)

Nortel Red Max is a good starter torch that wont break your wallet. once you start making enough to afford a more expensive one then do so. But I wouldnt spend a bunch on an expensive one while you are learning. If you tag the front of the more expensive ones it is over. better to learn with a 4-500$ one than one that costs thousands.
