I remember this too. Listening to the Boston radio media at the time, it seemed to be a CERTAINTY that the Patriots were going to release him as the story went, this kind of thing had zero upside for the Patriots. Edelman was an instantly popular player after his rookie preseason punt housing. It's famously shown in Belichicks Football Life episode. BB asks Welker if he's ever heard of Wally Pipp right after. However; Edelman was down in the depth charts behind Welker and others at WR. He was a special teamer and the fans did recognize him but, I recall thinking he was gone after this too. However; BB didn't cave to any pressure and he kept him. Thank Goodness. Now he's a guy people make documentaries about.

He's a hall of famer, I don't care what nobody pulls up the stats. He has playoff records, he has one of if not the most amazing catch in the history of the NFL, and he was one of the best competitors to play WR in the superbowl era. Dude was a legend, and not a single fan of all 32 teams wouldn't want him on their team if he was a free agent in his prime. All the shmucks people compare him to stat wise don't hold a candle to the moments that made him famous, thats why its the Hall of Fame not the Hall of Stats.

@@jeo228 You say that like the hall of fame voters don't look at stats as part of the equation, they in fact do, as stats are an important part of the judgement process as it removes the innate bias of humans. Stats are also crucially important for skill positions specifically to get into the hall of fame as that's the best way to objectively gauge their impact on the field compared to other players of that position both in their time, and all time.
