She did not break protocol with her outfits, she did just fine. She grew up with them around a fair amount of the time. She was more colorful and stylish, but still well within bounds. The strapless black, a little low in some shots. She never did that again.

The yellow overalls were appropriate for a sporting event. I don't know why so many people act like the queen dictates that all royal women have to dress exactly like she does, because it's demonstrably untrue. For example, the media acts like Meghan Markle was the first royal since Diana to wear pants to royal appearances, but Kate has been wearing pants all along, long before MM was around. All you have to do is go to Pinterest. Kate and William have made many joint appearances when Kate was wearing trousers and high heels, much like Letizia, the queen of Spain.

I was 4 when they were married & remember my mom dragging my sister & I out of bed in the middle of the night to watch the wedding. I have always had a fascination & admiration for her since, & I even got a book for Christmas that year called "Princess Diana & her Royal wedding". It was like a coloring book but was a paper doll book. It had several of what are now her "iconic" outfits. However, I didn't even know how Prince Charles was but didn't ever like him. I thought she was the princess before the wedding & couldn't understand why she was marrying the ugly man with the big ears that looked & acted like he sucked a lemon or stepped in dog poop!! I didn't think he deserved her & found no reason he should be in my little book. The only picture of Charles in the book was in color on the back cover in his wedding suit & didn't want that ugly man near the beautiful princess. It said "Princess Diana" not HIM, & was my book....so I cut him off the cover (much to my mom's fit)...& even after how all that worked found it dumb & told my mom it was ok because she needed a break from him when I played. Bet that book would be worth $$ now though. I remember once Diana& Charles were off somewhere & was probably one of the first times but definitely the longest she'd been away from the boys (& those boys were ALL to her), "protocol was they were supposed to do their little walk, maybe wave for the reports & photographers or shake hands with other snobs, whatever. BUT Diana caught sight of those little boys, her heart couldn't contain the love we could all see explode out of her & them for her. She forgot "her place & rules"! She ran for them & they got away from their nanny & when the were only a few feet apart, she dropped onto her knees & swooped them both into a monster bear hug!!...i think she was young, flattered, was deceived (or lied to) about many things, was naive about life in general & in over her innocent head with that ruthless bunch. Although she cried many tears in private, no one watching considered she wasn't anything living anything but a fairy tale. After trying SO many ways to please people impossible to even of any tiny a smidgen of kindness towards her, with the elegance, class, dignity & grace...she gave up on their approval, & evolved into "The People's Princess" we all loved & did lots of things she did, she knew damn well would set the Queen's (& plenty of others) knickers on fire but choose to follow her heart anyways. Even getting divorced, talking to reporters, being honest about her struggles (all no, no's)& life after she continued doing amazing charity work & bravely holding her head high as though they couldn't take her true crown away!!! I think part of why she died was she refused to be bullied into running away & hiding completely like they all wished she would. She just wanted some peace, a quieter, more private, happy life, to be in love & move on to be loved...& was living her choices even though it killed her. Even in death, she never stopped striving toward her dreams, she inspired & gave courage to many little girls watching her example...i know she certainly did for this little American girl!!! I was 21 & pregnant when she died & cried like she had been my best friend!!! May her beautiful soul rest in peace....& the rest of that rotten bunch spend their afterlifes in one of their own damp dungeons that they deserve for SO many reasons!!!

I’d have to take issue with you about some statements in this video. Diana was only known as Spencer before she married. Afterwards it was always Princess Di, or Diana. Secondly I don’t ever recall the Queen interfering in Diana’s wardrobe, although Diana tried out new fashions and wore some frankly frumpy stuff in the early 80’s before she found her own style and confidence. She then became a huge fashion icon. Incidentally Meghan Markle is no longer a ‘Royal’ - her and Prince Harry have opted out, so there’s no doubt she can wear whatever she likes these days. Comparing her to Diana in any way does Diana a disservice. Diana had class and breeding. Something that Markle will never have. Please don’t compare the two. A better comparison can be made with the classy Duchess of Cambridge who will one day be Queen and an equally stunning fashion icon!

What it's worth, Princess Diana is n will remain my favorite of all the Royals. She was kind,down to earth n easy to connect with the common ppl. As far as the critics go of her choice of clothinng to wear to any gala events,she could have worned ragged torned up jeans,blaues, crowned with her royal jewelry n still She would have looked spectacular...simply gorgeous. We here in the states r not too much into royalty however, U had much to do do in changing our minds toward that arena of belief. The ones in the the thrown now don't do much to excite me. Rest in peace dear Lady.

When I see Princess Diana in videos like this, I am reminded of how young she was. Of course, she wanted to be herself. Don’t all young people want to find their own style and develop their own fashion sense? She could have any designer she wanted and some of the outfits didn’t suit her young slender figure, but she kept trying. She finally found an iconic look. What a shame she was so overly judged in her early years. I feel for her 😞 .

There are numerous photos of Queen Elizabeth in gowns that showed her shoulders, all worn on formal occasions. Princess Beatrice was married in one such gown owned by the Queen, though she had it reworked with chiffon sleeves added for her wedding. I highly doubt there was ever a "rule" that royal ladies could not show shoulders or backs. Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge has a few one shoulder gowns, spaghetti strap gowns and gowns that show her back. The research for this video is appalling.
