I’m a custom silage harvester and the 19mm is the cut length. The distance from the knives and shear bar don’t change because you want them tight for a clean cut. What dose change is the feed roll speed, and that is what forces the crop into the knives. Slower feed roll speed shorter cut, faster the speed longer the cut. Cool to see how it’s done in other parts of the country!

Was just going to post this. Its effectively the length of material fed into the drum from the feed rollers(compression rollers) before a knife passes it.

Another awesome video. I’ve worked for a company where we hauled waste fruits & veggies into digesters in a less rural location and a farm in south GA. Scientists are working more and more on how to recycle one byproduct into another product and so on. Jokingly they are using everything from the cow except the moo, and they are working on that. Thanks all.

We LOVE following along with you! Thank you for being a farm advocate, Zach! I am fourteen and I have a farm KZbin channel too! Someday I hope to reach as many people as you do! Blessings to you!

Very interesting indeed. I am retired now but I was a tour bus driver out of Ontario, Canada. I have driven by these huge dairy operations in New Mexico, Arizona, and California but never had the chance to actually visit. Most of them aren’t on land that has irrigation so they buy all the food for the cows. I also liked how he explained the pens for the young calf’s being like a child’s crib. That should stop the well meaning people that think farmers are treating their animals poorly from condemning without education

,Looks like quite the operation. There are 2 huge dairies west of me. One is 9500 head & the other is 11,000 head. They use the rotating milking system I think. When the 9500 head dairy was built they said it cost $50,000.000 to build. They even have an apartment building for the workers.

Hey Zack/Becky, keeping in the spirit of touring different farms and learning from eachother... I'd love to make a suggestion. Maybe at some point in the future you guys could set up a colab with the guy from "Crime pays but botany doesn't". He's a really cool and really smart self taught botanist. He's probably mostly against racing around big motorized vehicles across beautifull natural areas but I think ya'll could learn a lot from eachother. His enthausiasm about botany is really contageous. I bet he has some vast and invaluable knowledge about the native plant life of minesota and effects of water management/herbicides on the ecology of the region. Or might give some extra insight into the ecological areas you guys maintain (natural wetland areas if I remember correctly?). Might be a cool contrast to the constant agricultural based plants. Thanks for all the awesome videos!!

Ilsa has the touch, hope she gets her own pony soon. The dairy farm made me so happy!! he seems to have closed all the loops!!So happy to hear about water recovery systems and reuse. Digester system on the farm is awesome. Does he sell his composted manure? Having had crop duster flying low over my house and dairy goat herd , wonder if that frquent exposure is what has lead to this pesking neuromuscular disease. Those chemicals are nowhere near benign .Well done video.
