This is absolutely beautiful. It's nice to be able to play a piece, but I always hated that I could never just sit down and play something without having memorized it. I've been realizing more and more how a knowledge of theory is important but this video really made putting that knowledge into practice so much more accessible. I love it! I'm going to be watching a lot more of your videos and hope to show my appreciation by taking some of your courses in the future. Thank you, Noah.

Great video Noah! I was wondering if you or maybe other commenters know more about something I stumbled upon...instead of quartal or quintile voicings, it would be like sextile (or hexal?) So it's literally an inversion or flipping a major seventh chord upside down and building it from the root at the top down separated by sixths...so like Cmajor 7 would be like CEGB but low to high going BGEC...maybe at this point the chord would technically be called something else, but it works great for diminished 7 chords too and I think I have heard those in orchestral music ...would this fall under the umbrella of Tertial or tertian harmony. Thanks for your hard work helping inspire us all.

Excellent introduction to these amazing chords and voicings. I would argue that they entered the rock/pop universe via the great ears and compositions of the keyboard giants of the seventies: Rick Wakeman, Tony Banks, Kerry Minnear, Chick Corea, and Keith Emerson. (If I've left anyone out, additional suggestions are welcome.)

I've been enjoying your videos. I'm a long time player, but switched from guitar to piano in my thirties. I've developed my own system because i'm not good at reading and the number stuff,,,#13b9 etc, i am just starting to think of in those terms. . And i hate it. lol So hard for me to memorize and transpose. Thanks for explaining great ones so well. My system involves almost exclusively patterns and chord stacking. While watching this video i came up with a great one that allows me to easily transpose altered V, Thought i'd share a bit. You've probably come across these, but the perspective may be different. in your example, of BbM7, with half step at the bottom. Lower third to get BbminM7, etc, OK, for short cut i added a 7th (C) on top and you have DbM7#5 in RH. Can add G for full pentatonic grip, and get DbM7b5#5 Ok, drop the Db to the LH and you simply have an F triad or Fadd9 in RH. a few options in LH like you showed, but the full short cut the LH can become a plain old G dim chord . G Bb Db E in LH and F A C in Rh So stacking wise, we would have a One triad, over a dim chord built on the two, or seven for an Alt V,,, Csus13b9 or other applications. Can also make the RH FM7 A main trick i use is to separate L and R hands by a ninth or a seventh. This always gives a sus 13 of some kind. A 9th separation gives hard sus, a 7th separation give soft sus. I hope this wasn't too confusing boring or burdensome. Thanks again for all your great videos.
