No Ties. IMO that's one of the "nice things" about American Football - since there are different ways to score with different points awarded, ties are rare and can be eliminated altogether, unlike soccer and hockey.

@@PJ.Rob06The counter to that is the NBA where lucky teams (like the cavs) spring board their capital in 3 years and convince big names to come to town not based on merit cause them to win championships. And unlucky teams (like the pistons) literally rot forever. It's a little more complicated there because the pistons are also failing to trade and develop well but still only half the story. Then you get teams like the 76ers who want to tank to build a team, but because it's all luck based they had to tank for 10 years to get 3 good players rather than 3-4 years when picks are guaranteed. To the uninitiated, the NFL pre-merger during the 60's had their 2 divisional LOSERS play each other the week after the actual Championship game (not the Super Bowl note which of course was 2 weeks later), all played in the Orange Bowl in Miami. Vince Lombardi once had his Packers shanghai'ed into playing it, dismissively calling it the "Sh*t Bowl." [the Pack natch then won the next 3 NFL Championships] The whole idea was mercifully junked after the full 1970 merger, but when it was extant it did raise a lot of money for charity. It also indirectly helped Miami get the expansion AFL Dolphins.

Lombardi famously said "it's a hinky-dink game, played by hinky-dink players, in a hinky-dink town. that's all 2nd place is: hinky-dink." he gave so little shit about the game that the one year the Packers played in it, they lost. To the Cardinals! he also cared so little that he didn't even get his own quote right. He said 2nd place was hinky-dink, but the game was for THIRD place, not second.

This way teams can't tie their way into the playoffs. and it's fair because every in-division game isn't a tie, instead of the just the last game where the opponent can change.
