Back to my trip to The UK, where I set out to capture the plethora of diesel powered units the central UK has to offer, today bringing the workhorse of Trans Pennine Express (TPE); The class 185.
I always knew these units were quite powerful, but I never realised how fast they can get away. All seemed pretty as usual until the unit fired off another gear, which just left me mindblown. Look at that ridiculous acceleration as soon as the second unit passes us. Amazing!
Beautiful scenery by the way, at the station of Huddersfield. 🥰

The TPE 185 engines were specifically designed to cope with the hilly routes they work. Designed for purpose and very good units. You will see similar acceleration from a Class 68 hauled set - but that's expected from a loco. These underslung engines are very robust.

The final carriage takes two seconds to pass the camera. At fractionally under 78 feet long, this means that the train is travelling at 26.6 mph when the rear cab passes the camera. And still accelerating - so roughly 30 mph by the time the whole train has left the platform.

Quite impressive... @TrainsbyM

Absolutely, especially considering that diesel powered train sets have a lot less power to deal with getting off their place, than electric train sets do. Electric trains also have the added bonus of continuous torque as well, ofcourse. On terms of the fastest accelerators, I'd say those hyper modern emu sprinter, commuter and/or express classes find themself at the top. Our (The Netherlands) Stadler FLIRTs for example or the German Siemens Desiro HC. And I'm pretty sure there are some very worthy UK contenders as well, while the new Hitachi intercity sets are very quick in electric mode as well! This all is with the exception of unrestricted single locomotives ofcourse. Those puppies can reach near car like acceleration. 😂

@@TrainsbyM Probably the closest thing we have here in Australia are the Endeavour diesel sets that now mark 30 years in service. They pull really well, have an excellent ride and feel quite luxurious to ride in. I used to travel in them from work to home in the 90s when they were new and the driver really opened it up once they got clear of the congestion leaving Sydney heading south. My hometown is Huddersfield, the 185s are really very good for the routes they do, as with most stock in that area of Northern England, they're very useful for inclines, along with the Class 333 EMU's. The only downside of those 185s... they're so very small seat wise for that section of the network at peak time, and sometimes off-peak too, a lot of standing room only trains.
@TrainsbyM
@TrainsbyM Жыл бұрын
I guess they were made more for express services than for commuter services, being a bit more focused on comfort over capacity. As far as I know there is the option to couple three of them, but I don't know how that pans out on most stations.
@AdamTaylor-RDL
@AdamTaylor-RDL Жыл бұрын
@@TrainsbyM I've never seen more than 2 coupled together, at least that was also in revenue service. The entire section of track between Manchester & Leeds (dubbed the 'Huddersfield line') is an absolute nightmare, and one of the busiest corridors on the network, with a huge increase in passengers in the last 2 decades, but the trains and also signal capacity hasn't really been able to keep up to be able to deliver trains with enough frequency. Transpennines new trains have much more capacity but often only work specific routes. The 185s originally did more longer journeys, but now often do stopping services along the route, previously operated by Northern. All of TPE's trains are quite pleasant to be on, unlike some other new trains that have... very uncomfortable seats.

@@theblockybanana5537 On 185's yes, anything longer wouldn't fit onto most of the smaller stations like Ravensthorpe & Brough, although 185's are rated for up to 12 carriages tied together, 9 in passenger service, and they do have unit door blocking (a type of selective door operation) to block doors at smaller stations. In terms of over 2 trains together though I've seen East Midlands Railway tie 4 153's together to get a pretend 155 setup after one was out of service, and old Northern when it was Serco/Abellio rarely tied 3 Pacers together, as well as 156/150+142+142 on Leeds - Sheffield runs during peak. In theory 15X's are rated for being joined up to 12 cars total, but I personally have never seen one so big, outside of doing last day empties to depots on Christmas Eve.

Also note the more vocal exhaust note of the VP185 installation in the XPT. Search KZbin 'Trains | NSW TrainLink | Move Over V Set, XPT Coming Through!' Looking at the nowadays diesel-mechanical transmissions however, they can just as easily pull this off, with their shifting gears. This one is close to 20 years old, though... Nonetheless they are all diesel multiple units in one way or another, and compared to the superior, in strength, electric multiple units, it still is downright impressive to me! These are great units, I used to travel on them frequently from Leeds to Huddersfield and back. I had few cancelations but lots of lates! In the defence of TPE I would say that the on train staff were always nice, often making humorous announcements. On one occasion the announcement was about the train having to be taken out of service at Manchester as it was running out of fuel, the conductor said he couldn’t believe he was making such an announcement, but he assured passengers that a service would be at Manchester to take them onto Liverpool. Perhaps they should copy the idea that I have seen in the states where a fuel tanker is positioned on the platform to refuel the long distance services (1000’s of miles), not Cleethorps to Liverpool 😂.

Mmmm yes,not been on one for a few years though there is a chance to compare DMU acceleration on the Sheffield-Doncaster & Sheffield to Barnsey lines where,if you alight at Meadowhall you get the chance to choose from a number of options-local class 150 (utterley dreadfull),class 158,class 195 to Barnsley, Turbostar to Scarborough (my fav) or this long beauty to Cleethorpes.I do wish they would sort the PA at Meadowhall,it is awfull on all 4 platforms. Dont think the DMU acceleration is anywhere near the EMU equivalent though.I took the Ely to Cambridge line on a London Kings Cross service and it was so fast out of the platform it felt like it was going to come off the tracks going over points,rather alarming jolts from side to side at times.
@TrainsbyM
@TrainsbyM Жыл бұрын
Sorry, overlooked this comment! That 195 is pretty feisty as well, I've noticed. Normally spoken diesel acceleration should by far be inferior to electric acceleration ofcourse. That's as well what makes this so mind boggling, almost daring to say on those few first meters in that second gear, the DMU might even win from the EMU, which would be pretty wild concerning the difference in power to an EMU. It wouldn't keep up though, clearly. 😁

Wiki says the class 185 is a DHMU. Does it mean the diesel engine is directly connected to the transmission and wheels without any electric motors?
@TrainsbyM
@TrainsbyM Жыл бұрын
Kinda! dhmu means diesel Hydraulic multiple unit. Meaning the engines go through a means of transitioning power through a hydraulic system. There is also a direct transmission variety which would be the genuine 'dmu'. They mostly go through at least 4 gears. The 195 for example. DEMUs and DHMU's engines work more like a generator, but they can have, but don't need, more than one gear. As far as my knowledge extends, that is. ☺️
@petermichaelgreen
@petermichaelgreen Жыл бұрын
BR tried mechanical transmissions for DMUs but had reliability problems. So moved to hydrodynamic transmissions (aka torque converters). Afaik most DMUs from the late BR and early privitisation era use hydrodynamic transmissions with a few intercity models using electric transmissions. The 195 seems to be a transmission similar to the automatic gearboxes used in automotive world that combines a torque converter with a 6 speed mechanical gearbox. IMO it's a travesty that bi-modes weren't specified when the 195s were ordered but the priority seemed to be to get new trains as cheap as possible.
