so maybe i'm a doofus, but i didn't think it was "easy"; HOWEVER, your instructions were so clear, that i was able to follow along with a picture of my own and it worked beautifully like you said it would. your video is a refreshing change from the very minimalist affinity manual. thanks so much for the lesson. (i'm a reluctant affinity convert because i don't cotton to photoshop's subscription method of extortion and while i still have my reservations about affinity, this video is giving me hope.)

Great tutorial as always. It works but why? How does red channel select light areas?
@AffinityRevolution
@AffinityRevolution 5 жыл бұрын
Selecting the Red channel selects all of the colors in the photo that have a lot of red in them. White/bright areas have a lot of red in them (as well as a lot of blue and green). The nice thing about selecting the red channel though (as opposed to the other color channels) is that skin tones tend to be mostly red, so selecting the red channel will keep your skin tones safe. Otherwise, you could probably select either of the other color channels and still get a great result. I hope that helps! 😊

HI there, Thanks for this vid. It looks as though some changes were made to affinity since this vid though? The only way I can get to anything like this is by going to layer, add a new and then I have channel mixer? Is this the same? I can't seem to even get directly to the adjustments anymore in the side pane like I used to. Not sure whats going on with it?
@AffinityRevolution
@AffinityRevolution 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I'm not sure what's going on with your adjustments, since they are in the same spot (at the bottom of the layers panel). Feel free to post a screenshot and ask for help on the Affinity forums. Wow. I've been using Levels (white and black and gamma) to lighten photos - always thought they looked "realistic" but this looks better. I wonder what you mean as "the most natural way"? Is it the physics of color? optics? how are eyes see color????
@AffinityRevolution
@AffinityRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
I wish I knew all the science behind what makes lighting and coloring look natural. We used the word "natural" to highlight the fact that the photo still looks good/normal after brightening it (no blown out highlights, shadows still looking dark, etc.)

I have a question: you picked the red channel to select the brightest then inverted it to get the darkest areas. However this does not always work. What I do is I put an average blur on the picture to determine the average color. In your picture the average color is blue green. So when I select the green channel instead of the red channel and continue with the inverse of the green channel, and continue your process the effect is more pronounced. Red in your picture in my opinion does not give you the brightest colors, it accentuates the skin tones. When I tried this with a picture that was blue green only the process picking the red channel does not work at all. IT does if you pick the green or blue channel... When I used a color test strip it also did not work when picking the red channel and inverting it because it also selects the brightest greens as dark colors which is wrong. So I believe you have to average blur first, find what the strongest color that is and the best would be to select that color and use it and follow your process using whatever color (red, blue or green) the average blur color came up with That works . You can also pick the shadow tonal range and use blend ranges to select only the darkest shadows ( or any part of the shadows you want to lighten) and then follow your process. That works just as well let me know what you think
@AffinityRevolution
@AffinityRevolution 4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good technique to me! 😊 I was trying to keep this video simple, but if you're willing to invest a little more time, I think your method is great.
