@uhh Just curious. How long do you think people should date before they get engaged ? I knew within 6 months whether I wanted to marry someone or not. Still dated the ones I would never marry for more than 6 months most times. Wasted a lot of years because of that.
@RegrettablyLongwinded
@RegrettablyLongwinded Жыл бұрын
@@djg5950 statistically, last I read you were best off dating someone for a minimum of two years before marriage (except for those under the age of 22, whose brains are less developed). 6 months can still be within the honeymoon period (usually the tail end of it, but still). Longer engagements seem to be increasingly common these days, though, which I think is a great thing to normalize!

@uhh Who's to judge? My wife and I were engaged after 5 months of dating, married 15 months after our first date, will celebrate our 49th anniversary in July. Let's not sit in judgement and just wish them a lifetime of love and happiness.

Congrats! My wife and I got married in 1994; it feels like it was just yesterday. I think I'm still using the same box of compactor bags I bought back then! If I ever run out I'll switch to the Nylofume.

I have used the nylofume bags as a pack liner for about five years. They have never failed me. I have never owned a pack cover. My pack is not made out of water proof material. My pack gets wet. What is inside the nylofume bag does not. I, however, close the top of the nylofume bag differently. I twist the top. Then fold the twisted part in half. I then put an elastic hair tie around what is twisted. It works well for me.

On a similar note, I stopped using the dyneema tent bags that all the DCF tents come with. The one thing Dyneema is bad with is abrasion. And stuffing a Dyneema tent in a tight Dyneema stuff sack causes wear and tear on your tent. I switched to a large sil nylon stuff sack, so I'm not stuffing it tight and causing abrasion, and it actually packs down better this way because the rest of your gear can press it down to fit your pack. One thing I noticed after doing this is that my DCF tents went from being good for one Thru-hike to looking new after a Thru--hike and lasting a LOT longer, like 5000 miles longer.

Totally agree. I bought five expecting them to fail quickly. They are £3.50 each in UK. I’ve been really surprised - they are far more robust then expected. I twist mine closed and then stuff it down the side. I use Dyneema bags inside to separate some items - eg my cook set in one to keep other items clean. Congratulations on your engagement.

Let me tell you about my experience with nylofume liners. I use a zpacks arc haul 62 liter pack. When it was new, I used a nylofume liner because they were so highly touted as lightweight and strong. The problem is that the volume of the liner is just a little bit less than the pack. And the nylofume material is a little bit rubbery. So it moved around enough in the pack that it managed to roll up the edges of the seam tape inside the pack and get itself firmly bonded to the seam tape. So then, when I pulled out the liner, the seam tape came with it. I had to send the pack back to zpacks for repair. I have now gone to the smooth, slippery variety of trash compactor bags. Yes, they weigh about an ounce more than the nylofume. But they are bigger in volume AND the slippery surface actually allows my quilt and other things inside to be compressed far more effectively than was possible with the higher friction nylofume material. I will never use that nylofume crap again.

Congrats on the news. Personally, I like a compactor bag. I have used a nylo bag as a liner. It popped when I pushed my quilt down into the bottom. The weight difference is small between the nylo bag and my trash compactor bags. I still carry a nylo bag as a backup. If my trash compactor bag ever fails, and I have to switch, maybe my experience with the next nylo bag will be better.

We used to live in a townhouse that had a trash compactor, so had compactor bags available. After moving I used one to hold a bag of mortar or something like that figuring it would be really strong. It could be a chemical reaction, and remember this was over years, but it totally shredded, when I went to grab it. They are possibly designed to decompose at the dump. In any event this deterioration is not dispositive, but for anyone who was going to stock up on a box, they might not last as long as one would expect. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable about their composition will weigh in on this.

I have primarily used a compactor bag but have been tempted to try the nyloflume. When I have to check my pack on a flight, I choose a thicker compactor bag. I actually wrap my pack in one contractor bag, which gets tossed at the destination. I have a second contractor bag that I use as the liner on the trail - then I wrap the pack in this second contractor bag for the return flight.

The only week point I've found in a nylofume pack liner is the bottom seal. I was stuffing my quilt into one, but I didn't notice that I was holding more of the bag than I needed to, and POP, I had a nylofume tube 😢. The same material is used to make turkey roasting bags, though they are more day pack or food bag sized (I use one to line my ursack), and some brands of diaper pail liners. Though the only ones I've found have been scented, so probably best avoided.

Congratulations! I have been watching you for years, and do not comment much, but I wanted you to know that you taught/inspired me to go on my first (adult) backpacking trip ever! My husband and I started with an easy 2 night trip near our home in Ohio, and we used so many of your tips that it didn't feel like we were new at all! My husband used your videos to pick out my pack for Christmas and it is fantastic. I have watched so many other hikers since finding your thru hike videos, but you are my most trusted source for advice. You truly have inspired me to get out there! I hope your soon to be husband likes hiking so you two can share experiences like my husband and I did and are excited to plan for the future! Thank you Dixie!!

In Europe you’d be woefully unprepared if you just rely on a pack liner. In some remote places of the UK you’d also want to pack all your gear in individual bags as well. I also use separate ‘system’ sacks of different colours so that I don’t have to pull everything out at once to get to one thing. A sack for warm clothes , a sack for spare underwear, a sack for sleeping bag and so on. Apart from being efficient it reduces the time that your rucksack is open to the elements. And congratulations on the engagement!

Thank you for this! I had no idea the nylofume was so strong. Watching you try to rip it has convinced me - I had just assumed it would be frail since it was so lightweight. I’ve used nylofume and I had a camera cube tear it so for my needs they are a bit suspect. If you don’t have anything with sharp edges, I think you’ll be fine. They are so light I keep one in my pack for day hikes should the need arise. That said, last year I had a two week hike with daily deep water crossings so I opted for a dyneema roll top liner as added insurance, even though my HMG pack stays dry inside after all day rains. While that may be overkill for more typical conditions, one can’t be too careful in near freezing water. I did loan my nylofume liner to another in the group who learned the hard way that pack covers don’t cut it in extreme conditions.

Congratulations, go into it knowing that marriage is a series of ups and downs and those that last are the ones that the parties have similar values, talk to each other, and laugh with each other. Also, if your partner isn't your best friend, they should be. 58 years married, and I wish that we could say we knew this stuff when we married, but the truth is, we just lucked out because we never talked about the important stuff, we were in love. What did we know about that? Nothing, we were eighteen and nineteen. Pure luck. Wish you the same.
