Grew up in Aliso Village myself from 1970 till about 1987 at 1211 Via Francisca Street. Right next to Mission Street. Generates lots of nostalgia.

Yo, the US-101 freeway isn't the San Bernardino freeway, that would be the I-10 San Bernardino freeway, the 101 is the Ventura freeway, then the Hollywood freeway, then the Santa Ana freeway till it's terminus and the L.A. Interchange in Downtown

Hey I grew up there!!! Cuatro Flats was the gang at the Pico Gardens Projects back in the 70’s and 80’s. We moved there when I was 1 and moved out when I was almost 19. So many memories ❤ we were never bothered by the gang they knew everyone who lived there and left us kids alone, even as teens we didn’t feel unsafe but I suppose because everyone knew each other. I remember some cholos going to knock on our door all the time asking for my dad because he loved playing basketball and he was good! So they’d get games together at the park. I do remember being a young teenage girl and walking over to another side of the projects somewhere wearing a red or blue shirt don’t quite remember but I was gonna visit a friend who lived there. About 8 or 9 young black men called me over to where they were standing around and well I listened lol. They asked me where I was coming from and where I was going and if I knew I was wearing the wrong color .. I answered their questions (and they were all very nice to me) and they told me I had to go home and change my shirt then I could come back. Well I did just that and went back to visit my friend Barbara … they saw me arrive back and just said hello and reminded me to not wear that other color around there. Really so many memories… went to Second street elementary school, Hollenbeck Jr high and Roosevelt High School.. ❤

Lived there in the 80s - Fun times - Via Portola on Mission side (near El Pato sauce factory). Had seasons for play time - bike season, marble season, skateboard season, etc. I survived Aliso Village. Only gang on Via Portola was Al Capone. Walk down towards first street and you were at Primer Flats Territory. Walked towards 101 fwy and you were going towards 1st street East Coast Crips and Dukes 13 territory. The good thing about growing up in the projects the gangs did not mess with us kids. Who remembers the candy store. How about the mixed couple that worked at the liquor store (she was Asian and he was Black) with two kids. The candy store was my favorite before going to Utah street school. I still remember the penny candies and bags of chips with cheese. Also had a good friend - Sal (Green Eyes) growing up in Aliso Village. I lived on Via Portola and we would walk to his grandmas place in the Primer Flats Territory. Gangs never messed with kids. And then came the football games. I still remember Eddie breaking his leg. Fun times. I also remember the Friday night fights near Utah street school - most of the 1st East Coast crips hung out there.

There was about 6-7 active gangs that all claimed parts of those projects imagine your apartment complex having 7 active gangs all running around your front yard

That's unusual for southern california. But that was typical in chicago. Depending upon the building, each gang controlled a building, in the same projects. Somebody I know from Chicago told me that literally across the street in a different building, you saw the rivals.
