I once threw a Laundry-Mat in a campaign, run by an old lady who would teach employees basic magic ( a way to introduce the concept of level 0 ) and would go into detail about how dirty, muddy, bloody, or w/e, that my players states currently were, and would have NPC's react accordingly - so, this "forced them" into the Laundry-Mat : they could have just cleaned their own clothes on downtime, but I ALSO wanted to tie this in with "Friendly NPC" and "employed by Players NPC" uses, at a very, mundane level. No one read Prestidigitation, after seeing it had : no Damage. The Entire Laundry-Mat was employed by people who could successfully learn, Prestidigitation, and be able to clean clothes, linins, etc., for their Tutoring in Magic, from the old-lady. Come Their first real Down-Time (one they understand some options they have, And act on them), our Wizard started getting lessons from the old lady, to get the cantrip himself. Wizard role-played with some of her students, and developed friendships- I role-played them all having varied goals after "getting into a Wizard's College!" By the time our planned 4-5 sessions in the city, he had taken 3 0 level Farmers, and turned them into... I guess 1/2 level Wizards? We stopped around lvl 12, since most of the party was, due to life-stuff, cancelling last minute (always legit excuses - we really were a good group for our first year+ ; life just happened) BUT- we would meet up and do higher level one-shots with these characters when we could. During one, I had them trying to gain access to a Library in a College, to get info on a Creature that needed killing. They couldn't gain access, as none were members of the College. Me: Wizard, you hear a voice call out your name, and a Student of the College rushes up to you, taking your hand and shaking it over and over. You recognize them, as one of your friends, from the Laundry-Mat. Had it so they thanked Wizard, because without their help, they never would have passed the Entry-Exam! A short conversation between the Student and the Professor, and... Student helps them into the Library, Find the Book, and writes down the useful info for them, along with people in town who might know where to get this-or-that. Best use for Prestidigitation I've ever implemented, as a DM.

Another great build I would love you to cover is around utilising Invoke the Amaranthine from Humblewood. (Portant at home) From how it is worded, it stacks like death ward meaning yesterday's spell slots become todays power. A few ideas come to me by abusing certain other spells and mechanics Twilight Cleric - Action Twilight Sanctuary, Bonus action Steps of Night, magically fly 20 - 30ft up and drop prone for constant disadvantage. Green Lantern Tech - Place a familiar in a empty lantern for full cover and it casts warding bond on you. To get a familiar either 2lv dip in Wizard (probably Divination) or strixhaven background + strixhaven mascot feat, or magic initiate. If you go strixhaven, it is best to pick the Pest mascot for its 5hp passive regeneration. If you go for normal familiar, the most hp familiar is gelatinous ice cube (oblex spawn stats)

Vortex warp became one of my favorites to twin on my divine soul as I was dropping the barbarian and fighter on any annoying enemies. Or bring one to help me and pull the other out of some control effect. Just rare was it not good to move both of them. Hell for the boss fight. It started across the room. So warped them over traps I didn't know were there.

If you wanted to maximize likelihood to hit, you can rearrange the build to replace wizard with clockwork soul sorcerer. That would make every role below a 10 equal to 10, therefore. It reduces some other aspects like the strength of Spirit Shroud but the damage is still (7+4.5×3+6)×(9+8)+(7+3.5+6)×(9+8)+(5.5+5+4.5×3+6)×4+(5.5+5+3.5+6)×4 = 931 However, a bugbear doing this on the first turn could be (7+4.5×3+6+7)×(9+8)+(7+3.5+6+7)×(9+8)+(5.5+5+4.5×3+6+7)×4+(5.5+5+3.5+6+7)×4 = 1225. With a +11 to hit, you will always hit creatures with 21 AC or lower. However, the you only get access to spirit shroud at 20th if you prioritize fighter and warlock first. Additionally all of the effects take a few turns to set up without preparation which could be inconvenient although some of it could be avoided with Contingency.

NGL I prefer a house rule where only Eldritch Knights using spells they learned through their subclass can bypass the 1 levelled spell per turn rule (no dual Scorching Ray without Fighter 7, literally rendering this impossible), but it's also loosened so a Grave Cleric can freely BA Spare the Dying and cast a levelled spell with their action or a Druid can Shillelagh and whatever etc. Also if I want to break D&D with a wizard, I'll go Illusionist, get Misty Visions via that feat, take Mirage Arcane (faint sheen of mist or very thin lacing of crisscrossing spiderwebs or somesuch across the ground, 6 lets me change the entire AOE), bam I'm practically a demigod at 14 and only barely less at 13, with picking up Wish a few levels later being just a formality.

If were talking Magic Items I think you can get the AC up to at LEAST 29 between a Ring of Protection, Cloak of Protection and Bracers of Defense. You might be able to get it higher still if you have a plussed Shield and Armor to get up to an AC of I think 35? And thats just to name a few options here, but even an AC of 35 is crazy because I think even a Level 20 characters +3 Weapon couldn’t break through that without a Crit, and I know even some decently high CR creature's(Even creatures up to CR 15-19) don't have to hits that bypass that without a Crit.

Bladesinger even gives you the proficiency for it without needing to dip. Like this fact alone is one of the reasons Bladesinger is the best wizard in most actual campaigns: 3 free first level spells on a 24 hour day is 3 more times you can say "i magic the problem away" and actual armor can be +1 down the line or enchanted with other usefull properties like elemental resitences (where mage armor cannot be upgraded)

Hey, great video. I know danse macabre is a very powerful spell, but for necromancers I would say it would rival or blow this build out of the water especially over time, at 20th level mono wizard it deals roughly 187 damage per round and lasts 600 rounds for an 8th level spell slot, the summons have up to 54 HP each thanks to inspiring leader with a +1 cha mod, so they are harder to kill making them last longer so they can deal the damage, they are vulnerable to big aoe damage but they can fight at a range and you can customise them a bit for more damage with equipment. The big factor is concentration. But stacking con is part of the solution positioning is the better part in my opinion

I would’ve taken a fighter level first, in every scenario other than if you’re not only playing at level 1: mostly because that constitution proficiency and heavy armor proficiency is really, really strong in combination with the defensive spells a wizard gets; as well, mage armor isn’t required since you have armor at level 1. With just starting equipment at level 2, with the shield spell, you can have an ac of 24 (16 from chainmail, 2 from a shield, 1 from defense, and 5 from the shield spell.) Can easily go up to 26 (with plate armor) or even higher (up to 32 with +3 armor and a +3 shield before attunement items) That and, you have proficiency in constitution saves and warcaster at level 1, leaving you an extra ability score improvement. Also, I would recommend calcing average damage while accounting for your hit chance, cuz it is a lot lower in practice with a chance to miss (for example, if you are fighting an ancient red dragon, you’re dealing a little less than 421.2 (or 299.2 if your dm rules the hexblades curse goes to the fire damage, not enough to kill.) Bit misleading to say it kills *everything* (or almost everything) in the monster manual in a round + a round of prep but 🤷🏾‍♂️ That and the claim every demon lord loses to this is a bit wild when orcus exists.
@OffbeatOutlaw
@OffbeatOutlaw Ай бұрын
The fighter start is good, only reason i didn’t is because comment sections in the past have called out my builds in the past for not including what you’d do at lower levels so I guess winning isn’t allowed on KZbin. And it does kill almost everything in the monster manual considering it kills basically 80% plus and if your dm rules hat hex blades curse is fire damage they are arguing against raw.

In order for this combo to work, all of the following need to happen: 1. The enemy can't be immune to fire damage (a quarter of all CR15+ creatures are) or the damage type you pick with Spirit Shroud. 2. You and your simulacrum both need to get exactly 10 feet away from the enemy. 3. You need to maintain concentration for a full round (you only have a 57% chance to do so against an ancient red dragon's breath weapon even with resilient con, absorb elements, and war caster). 4. You must be able to see the target. I'm not saying that it's a bad build by any measure but nuclear wizard does have some very key limitations that shouldn't be ignored.
@OffbeatOutlaw
@OffbeatOutlaw Ай бұрын
1. If the creature is immune to fire damage, it most likely isn’t also immune to radiant, necrotic, or cold. Spiritshroud will get through. 2. We can get 10 feet from the enemy easily with dimension door. SIM can cast that while the PC casts wall of force for full cover and now they’re protected from the breath weapon as well. If they weren’t though, there is a more than 75% chance that either the PC or the sim will make the concentration save which account for AC and immunities deals 214 damage dealing a third of the creatures health. If both sim and the PC make the save thats 346 damage on average dealing over half the dragons health. And this is a SINGLE character. Considering we’re doing real game scenarios there would almost certainly be a paladin in the party increasing that save chance tremendously, a support caster to wall of force the party while they set up. More casters to draw agro etc. and this wizard will be dealing more damage than all of them, which is the point of the build. All of these “necessary” accountancy’s are just scenarios that a competent player can think of their way through. Ngl I don’t think I should be going through every possible scenario for people in a video like this. It feels patronizing to me to have explain every single possible scenario and way to use a build, especially when in the video I am emphasizing how versatile the strategy and build is. The point is that anyone can make this build fit to their playstyle as scorching ray wish and spirit shroud are only 2 spells. You still have 37 spells to choose. I’ve beaten many dragons and CR 30+ creatures with this build, it’s not as insurmountable as comments make this seem

@OffbeatOutlaw

@@OffbeatOutlaw Wait, I thought the the plan was T1: Overchannel 5(th lvl) Spirit Shroud + Firebolt/Shocking Grasp T2: (highest lvl) Scorching Ray + Action Surge + (highest lvl) Scorching Ray That's three spells per encounter and Wishing for Simulacrum at the start of the day. And I believe we're holding our 1st lvl slots for defensive reaction spells. Oh, I see, it looks like you mis-counted what spell slots were used in the first half of your first sentence, but accounted for them correctly when listing total spell slots after the encounter. So we have about 12 Scorching Ray slots remaining, some of those will be used on Spirit Shroud as well. How much damage do we lose from not having the highest level spell slots to spend later in the day? Do those weaker Scorching Rays end the encounter as quickly as the stronger ones? How many more spell slots do we have to use per encounter to make up the difference? Arcane Recovery gets back, I believe, a 4th and 5th lvl slot, and that could help. Is it enough to keep up with this output? Are we OK with taking damage from Overchannel in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th... encounter? Is it worth taking the extra damage from being in melee, to deal the extra damage with Spirit Shroud? It looks to me like our ~145 hit points are dwindling quickly. It looks like the damage output will fall off a fair bit after the first encounter of the day, which will lead to spending more resources to make up for the loss. And this looks like a death spiral that runs out right as the 4th encounter hits. That's why I'm asking about this encounter in particular. Do we have any other strategies or are we just pretty good at the one thing?

while this is extremely strong, there are a few things that can break it, granted no build can do everything and this is not to dismiss this build, but more to remind people that having a strong build doens't mean you are invincible. one big weak point in the build are it's saving throws. while it can do dex, con and int saves, and keep concentration up pretty well, it's pretty weak against charisma, stength and wisdom saves, since you mid-maxed your stats and the remaining stats are 8, especially the save or suck spells that don't do direct damage, but provide major debuffs. Something like an dominate person (provided it isn't counter spelled) or a strong charm effect is a weak point, and depending on which charm you are hit by, you and your simulacrum are now aimed at your party, which is more frightening the stronger the build is. Granted they might be able to dispell the charm effect before your turn is up, but you get the point. Still an extremely strong build, and an interresting idea.

Just going to throw this out there: start fighter 1, wear medium or even heavy armor, and your AC will be better than Mage Armor. Not to mention you won’t have to spend a spell slot on it every 8 hours.

So as a 20lvl character (mostly wizard) you gonna go at 10ft range (this is the range required in order for spirit shroud to work) and prolly be dead the next round. Also scorching ray does fire dmg. Most enemies on that lvl are resistant or completely immune...

I wouldn’t say you’re dead next round because of your armor class.

@NoNo-tl9gb it's level20 so prolly CR30. A 30AC is perfectly doable but you have used your reaction so you can't counterspell which is the most important thing a wizard has to do. Not good my friend

@@panagiotisgeorgiadis2613 A. There are like, 5 cr 30s in the entirety of all dnd books. It isn’t likely you’ll only be facing those 5. B. If a monster is using their action on a spell you can counterspell, you likely survive that turn?

@@panagiotisgeorgiadis2613 in a scenario where you are fighting multiple enemies, use a spell like wall of force to split them up, reduce actions via control spells, etc. a wizard is not screwed just because they melee’d. You will only ever have to cast shield if you are actually hit. That’d require 2 monsters: one to hit you hard enough for you to wanna shield, and another to cast a spell; but wait, you have a *simulacrum*.

I mean the actual damage esp vs high AC enemies is far lower. For example, this build, even ignoring her immunities, would fail to kill tiamat. (Only does 334 average damage accounting for crits and hit chance). (34 *0.3 *(16+7+6)+34 *23 *0.05) It’s also not the strongest damage a wizard can do. Make a canon with fabricate. Or several if you wish. Have skeletons operate them. Every 3 skeletons is 8d10 damage with a +7 to hit. That’s 48 attacks at the skeleton cap through pure animate dead with a necromancy wizard of 144. Against tiamat, with undead thralls and magic weapon, that’s 741.6 average damage accounting for critical hit and base hit chance. (0.25 *48 *53+ 0.05 *48 *44). This takes no resources so you can do it round after round.

Your fabricate plan requires prep time, materials to make the cannon, ammunition and several skeletons. With prep time a wizard could also just make an infinite army of wizards with wish and simulacrum and would be capable of dealing well into the millions. Your plan is not within the parameters of the build. This build seeks to do the most with assumptions of what a wizard can do every day. For example, getting a simulacrum with wish. If I were to devise most damage possible within your parameters assuming your time constraints of gathering bodies for the skeletons, materials for the cannon and armor as well as gaining the skill proficiency to make the cannon as required by the fabricate spell, you will generously need a month of downtime JUST to get the tool proficiency. Within that month I could simply make an army of simulacrums well into the billions in a single day. Have them all do this. Tiamat is evaporated with over 167 billion damage. But once again, ALL of that is not the point of the build. You skeleton cannon build is cute but is entirely irrelevant and not the strongest either.
@OffbeatOutlaw
@OffbeatOutlaw Ай бұрын
Additionally your argument of “this takes 0 resources” is entirely disingenuous as you require ammunition to fire the cannon, the skeletons themselves which will be instantly incinerated by a breath weapon as they lack damage mitigation abilities, and the materials to use for fabricate

@@OffbeatOutlaw 1, you can do all of this in a day, bar nothing since you can just long rest cheese. 2, skeletons don’t take bodies, they take bones. Read the spell carefully and check sage’s advice. Neither the size nor type restrictions apply to the pile of bones. Get animal bones. You can buy chickens for copper pieces. This is rules as written and intended. 3, you can start with tool proficiencies via a background. That’s blatantly wrong. 4, all you need is iron or some other metal, which you can buy, since cannons via the rules don’t require gundpowder or anything. You can get that automatically, either via starting equipment or the adventuring you did to get to level 20. Or, should you say none of that is enough, use a simulacrum and wish for it the previous day. It’s not really hard. If you are to presume no infinite simulacrum, and that the prep needs to take a day, this build still qualifies. But if you aren’t, there are far stronger too, like shapechange builds. Infinite sim is infinite presuming infinite space, but you don’t need that if you cheese the clone spell and shapechange via a few monster abilities(stackable if you clone and shapechange) namely unconsciousness immunity, the berbalang’s spectral duplicate, and the nebassu’s soul devouring(which since its duration isn’t a statistic but the damage it gives is, is self stackable when you port it over to new bodies via either clone, simulacrum, or the far superior spectral duplicate) an arbitrarily high amount of damage no matter how much space you have(with convergent future to make it hit automatically) But that’s not within the constraints of every day and minimal prep since if requires months beforehand. But I digress the previous build most definitely qualifies.

@@OffbeatOutlaw furthermore, the canon has longer range than tiamat’s breath, and it doesn’t take ammo to fire it RAW, though even if it did you can just use repeating shot, since you barely need anything from wizard anyway, and canons in worlds without gunpowder aren’t stated to propel canon balls anyway. (“A cannon uses gunpowder to propel heavy balls of cast iron through the air at destructive speeds. *In a campaign without gunpowder, a cannon might be an arcane device built by clever gnomes or wizardly engineers.*” And beyond the setup nothing takes resources, there’s nothing disengenous about saying you can do it round after round. What’s really disengenous is presuming 100% hit chance or effectively 100% hit chance though, since no matter the plus to hit that’s actually fully impossible for the build.

@@OffbeatOutlaw You can start with smiths tools proficiency from your background. And skeletons can be made from animals RAW and RAI (check sages advice) so you can literally just use chicken bones. I don’t see how this guy’s idea equates to infinite simulacrum levels of cheese 🤔 Also how would you even go about establishing what a cannon requires mechanically for ammunition? Because it doesn’t have the ammunition property and doesn’t say it consumes ammunition.
