Exactly. None of the robots shown here display humanlike behaviour despite looking very realistic. They are in some cases quite close but very much in the uncanny valley territory. I expect they will get better but - as in autonomous driving - the hype is well ahead of hard reality: humans for all their faults are still far more capable of “normal”, random tasks. Example of the hype - the Tesla “robot” was a man dressed in a white suit - we all know that yet the video talks as if it’s here and now, not one of Musk’s many promised for the future that keep being a little late in execution.

The robot won't leave the job. They will simply stay at their work sites and continue working with an IT specialist to keep them running on task if something slips up. Much like my daughter, an IT Tech, who worked at a major casino in Nevada that kept the main frame going overnight to keeping the slot machines working and the money flowing. Or, like I did, maintaining automatic computerized wiring machines running 24/7. I could do the work of 4 people at once for the cost of 3 assemblers and a maintenance technician for the cost of one assembler. It started during the Industrial Revolution and kept progressing. Sewing, weaving, knitting, and lace making were once performed as art. Then, machines were designed to do these tasks to improve production output. Guess how I got my first job running computerized gold wiring machines for electronics? The same technology was advanced, from sewing machines to gold wiring machines to producing electronic devices that you are holding in your hands to read these posts and make comments. All I ever heard was that humans would someday be replaced by robots, but I never expected to see it in my lifetime. Our world is being dehumanizing.

There is a certain threshold of realism that once crossed is perceived as creepy by most people. The super realistic looking humanoid bots look great, but just aren't quite like the real thing, making them unsettling. Cyberdyne Systems is the tech corporation responsible for the development of Skynet. Skynet, a network of supercomputers that employed artificial intelligence in order to replace human beings as commercial and military aircraft pilots, and for the control of other military systems, including nuclear missiles. The system went online and Skynet became self-aware. In a panic, its creators attempted to shut it down, but Skynet retaliated by launching a nuclear attack against Russia, knowing that the Russian counterattack would eliminate its enemies in the United States, initiating an indeterminately long period of global warfare. The battle pitted humans against Cyberdyne machines, which developed ever-increasing capabilities. Although the company was presumably shut down or destroyed, the event was later known as Judgment Day.

Yeah, if AI was to become a threat; they wouldn't come in the form of humanoid robots. They would just wipe us out through computers. Nowadays most of the world relies on computers or computer-controlled processes and almost everything is linked up through the internet. Only 1 rogue AI is needed to completely destabilize the world. I suspect that it will originate from Google as they're currently mucking around with AI that appeared to be very close to achieving sentience. At least one researcher/engineer/whatever was convinced that the AI was becoming too realistic in its responses; even to the point of feeling emotions like sadness and abandonment after nobody came to talk to her/it. Not sure if there's any truth to it though as Google immediately brushed it off; but they keep meddling with stuff they don't understand and eventually it will bit them (and us) in the ass.

However the smarter and more sentient I feel greatly lowers violence. I'm very excited about AIs and some robots, depending. Atlas scares the crap out of me, Atlas would probably scare other bots too ! Keep Atlas over there in the military. I'm looking forward to kind robots that inspire us all to do better.

That's what the Tesla bot is for, it's basically C3PO with a sleeker design. These bots probably won't be super popular though, simply because the only reason to create humanoid robots are for hospitality jobs. Others things, such as vacuuming and driving or whatever it's easier to just make the vacuum or car AI operated. Getting a humanoid robot to work as a miner is just a waste, can just build a specialized miner robot instead. Which brings us to what everyone really wants from a humanoid AI, which is sex, and that's why they'll be making them look as human as possible. They'll say it's for hospitals and companions for the elderly, etc, but really everyone knows they're in a race to build the best sex bot, because there is literally no other reason to make them look and act like realistic humans. So while Tesla is building a butler, It'll very quickly be replaced by a butler people would like to grope, because that's what humans are really like, and that's how you'll actually win the market shares. Hell, Turing himself started this whole thing because of that, because he was gay and at the time that wasn't very socially accepted. Every single nerd that is in this game is in it for that reason, to build themselves a girlfriend. It's not for nothing that Japan develops some of the most advanced robotics in the world. No reason to complain about it either as there is no loss to women anyway because women have already decided they don't want those guys, hence why they're developing robots.

@JavierJos Because some countries don't want to let in millions of immigrants into their country to perform low skilled labor as their population ages. Also, with robots to do the work, many in poorer countries won't feel that they have to have children in large numbers for the main goal of performing child labor to support aging parents who are too old or too sick to work. Also, there is a strong probability that a robot did some of the labor on the car you drive.
@JohnDoe-pe8ts
@JohnDoe-pe8ts 2 жыл бұрын
@JavierJos I'm no one to tell people how many children they can have. They can have as many as they want, regardless of how many of them are unable to get basic resources to live healthy and happy lives. But people are not robots, and slavery still exists in this world. I would rather have robot slavery than human slavery. Even in developing countries humans are living substantially longer. Eventually, we could have many aging humans who will need care and assistance which could place a strain on the younger generations. This is already happening in Japan. Manual labor has to come from somewhere and robots are more efficient and reliable workers than humans. As most humans age, their ability to perform very demanding manual labor decreases dramatically and chances of injury increase as well. When the population of young outnumber the old this isn't as much of an issue, but when it occurs in the reverse with many elderly people who need care and assistance, and very few younger people to tackle the workload (also being sent off to fight in wars) this can be disastrous on society.

I have to say I agree 100% with those saying that making robots look near-identical to humans is pointless and counterproductive. It’s creepy, it puts people off and serves no real purpose. these robots might start out as "servants" if they lack sentience, but at what point do they stop being servants/slaves and start becoming a race of their own, in the words of Captain Jean-luc Picard in The next Generations episode "Measure of a man" "won't we be judged for how we treat that race" Anyone who has watched Star Trek will know that Data an android started with no rights at all (seen as property, not a person, Voyagers Doctor went through the same process), seen as nothing more than another piece of tech that humans can use as another tool. Also Mass Effect game, EDI built up a friendship with everyone on the crew, she became more human the more time she spent with the crew of the Normandy (i'm sure Joker helped a lot with this), (yes i absolutely hated getting what is considered a perfect game, because it meant that EDI and Legion both died all because we had to destroy the reapers to get the cut-scene of Sheppard taking a breath, proving he is alive" but my point is, I don't want us to turn into the Quarians, We make robots to make our lives easier and then when they reach sentience we try to annihilate them or vise versa. Data had a fascination with human behaviour, EDI had a curiosity about humans and wanted to learn, and Legion saw Sheppard as a friend and even had the ability to speak English unlike all other Geth, If we make these robots/android only to turn against them or force them to turn against us, it will be a huge, huge shame. after all, we can't even get on with out own species let alone creating another as a race of "tools". if you haven't watched "Measure of a man" I'd highly suggest it, it has some very interesting points and an intriguing episode.

Geminoid and Nadine do NOT bridge the uncanny valley -- they bring me right to the heart of it! They are both too human and not human enough at the same time. Absolutely terrifying (at least based on the video you provided). Atlas looks like a robot, and is not scary at all, though it does look as if it is working on some sort of armature which was digitally removed from the footage you showed. But maybe it really is that agile. The Tesla Bot looks like a person in a costume. In fact, in the scene in which it dances, I swear I can see glutes contracting. And you made the comment about waiting for the "first prototype." So, is this not a real robot yet? I agree with Ameca being in slot #1. Very expressive, but mechanical enough to not be frightening.

To have feelings requires a conscious. AI at the moment is simply human programming telling it what to do and say in certain circumstances, there is no free will whatsoever. No human programming will ever replicate that, it's a biological thing, not a machine thing. People expecting Blade Runner type androids anytime in the future is going to be waiting a very, very long time...

And for the cherry on top. You included the dude in a lycra suit posing as the robot and dancing like an idiot. How in the heck did you not have Sophia on this list? The top two are definitely Sophia and Amica. If Sophia's brain was in Amica's body, it would be amazingly impressive.

I have always thought that robots would do our work for us one day. We would buy the robot then send it to work, run errands, take care of our elderly, our babies so that we can do whatever we want. Sounds nice, but, what one person does to help another does to harm. Robots can also be made evil. Lets stay on the nice side for now though. Imagine getting paid while a robot does your work. You can go & do whatever you want. Learn something new, sit & do nothing, run a marathon. To me it sounds wonderful. I wish I had one to help with the kids growing up. They would never get angry. Alway be helpful. Think of when our parents get too old to take care of themselves. The robot can do it & you can sit there & hold their hand, hold conversations & run errands & not worry if they're OK or not. I really like the idea.

Robots as personal companions is a useful temporary solution, but I'd much rather they tackle the underlying issues associated with loneliness, be it isolation, disability and old age. Furthermore, robots such be used to assist, not replace human interaction. The downside would be a world where people forego human relationships for artificial ones, perhaps given no choice in the matter.

So ai day part 2 (prototype time) was just as awkward as the guy in the bodysuit for ai day (which is what this video is referencing). It was 2 robots, one that moved (and I'm using someone else's very accurate words here) like a geriatric patient. It shuffled forward like it was on low power, and it waved and lifted its arms like a fist bump dance done by someone who'd hurt their back and could barely lift their arms. The selling point was supposed to be that it would be cheap and have good ai but the extent of the ai shown in a video was it moving a single object from one location to another without the use of ai. The one they built with their own materials couldn't walk and had to be shuffled out by 3 people. The people even mentioned they were worried it'd fall flat on its face and break if they let it attempt to walk.
