Gardening in my studio apartment has empowered me mentally in a way that even succeeding at business didn’t. It’s like a bridge from my painful situation to a more healthy lifestyle. The fact that my circumstances led me to garden in the first place and to find resourceful ways of going about that I wouldn’t know about if I had more space and money, reminds me there’s always hope. Follow your bliss. If it makes you feel good just watching someone else do something, it’s worth trying it out yourself. As you go along you’ll find that things will fall into place even if you don’t know how when you start. That’s why they say gardening is like gambling l, even the most experienced growers have obstacles that surprises them. You may also find that the more you do things that make you feel good, the more you’re inspired to do things that make you feel good. You build momentum. A gardening tip, you don't want to leave squash foliage including cucumber plants breaking down on top of garden soil over winter as mildew & mold spores will take hold especially under landscaping fabric. Which can cause major issues for next years seedlings sown in place. The heat of a large compost pile will kill most mold & mildew spores as you turn it over & over. A clean & tidy organic garden helps prevent disease.

At first she said she was going to leave them but changed her mind( because of disease) she said she would let the chickens play with them. On one bed she did leave the roots but a lot of garden blogs say to do this.Thats what she said to ME!!

Another issue with using non composted garden waste on top of soil is the dreaded Thrips larva over wintering. However there's now an excellent organic solution to treating Thrips using predator mites.

Yes the silks that were not fully formed were still maturing. They were pollinated but still growing. Once the silks are brown and dried up you can pretty much count on the corn being mature. Becky you do amazing job and your energy level is amazing! Love your channel and have learned so much from you.

Hi Becky, I suggest you give each rised bed a number or a name, and make an excel sheet to keep track of what you do in it: what verity of produce, how much yield, what rotation, when and what was the emendments... you can keep record every year so you can retrace your steps to repeat or change. Love your work, you give us so much!❤

Using a seed starting mat with thermostat, to ripen your pumpkins. You could drape them with a plastic tarp and have a bowl of water under the tarp with the pumpkins to increase the humidity. This is also a way to ripen sweet potatoes (I have them in a tote, with the glass of water inside all on the mat set at 85) Good luck with your ripening.

The 3rd ear of corn you picked that you said didn't get pollinated did get pollinated! Just leave it on the stalk longer and pick when the silks are dry! Not every cob will get ripe before the end of the season but you definitely don't have to harvest all at once! I've been growing corn and sweet corn with my dad and grandpa since I was little and sweet corn is always planted at the same time but harvested throughout the fall!

I finally tried the Cinderella pumpkin after I saw you roast one in another video at your last homestead.... it was sooo good! Can’t wait to see you roast pumpkins this year so I can see which ones I want to try next! Great harvest! 🎃 Corn Tip: when the tassels begin pollinating, take a stick or broom handle (or something of the like) and tap the stalks to help the pollen fall and pollinate the silks better. You will have more fuller cobs and less that are not pollinated. You can also pull a tassel and rub the silks with a tassel. Learned that from an agricultural university where we live, so I thought I would pass on the knowledge! 😊

Becky have you tried Candy Roaster pumpkins? It was my first year and I'm hooked. I had one ripen early in the season and the vines looked like they died off amongst the fairytale pumpkins. The other day I was clipping leaves around pumpkins to have them ripen quicker and noticed 10 -15 new candy roasters. That made me excited because I made a pumpkin pie with the first one and the meat was so dense and sweet. I will have to scale down the sugar in pies made with candy roasters. They are fun to grow too!

Hi Becky, Josh and Baby A :) I just wanted to say thank you Becky for inspiring me to try gardening for the first time ever this year. My parents loved growing fruit and vegetables when I was growing up but it never really interested me back then, being more into gymnastics and dancing classes than getting my hands dirty in the garden. Sadly they are no longer with us to see the change in my attitude today towards growing a garden but I only did so after coming across your channel about a year or so ago, possibly a little longer but I started my first ever garden "with you" this year and followed your lead through watching you attend to yours. Taking your advice and learning through your challenges it wasn't long before I was adding more and more to my garden, and am happy to say that I managed to grow some tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, green onions, peas, strawberries, an abundance of courgettes (you guys call them zucchini) a singular bell pepper, a handful of green beans and one glorious Cinderella type pumpkin. I never thought it possible, but here I am looking back on the year so far and can't get my head round how well the garden produced. I am already plotting my next year's garden, some things I will definitely change now that I understand the 'mechanics' of it a lot more than when I planted my first seed.. funny thing, the pumpkin was the first thing I planted, 15 started growing but only one survived and I'm harvesting that tomorrow so it will be the very last thing coming out of the garden too. Anyway, if it hadn't been for you popping up on my feed all those months back I probably would never have even considered planting anything, so Becky I dedicate my first ever garden to you and can't wait to see what next year's gardens will bring for us all. If you lay a tarp on the gravel before you clean out a raised bed, you can drop all the vines or stalks or whatever onto the tarp and then you can easily drag it out of the garden to the chicken coop or compost pile.

I'm only 7:32 the video so far, but wow! Well done on your gorgeous harvest. You're hard work has definitely paid off. Next year, will you leave fabric off that bed? That way, the vines can attached themselves to the soil and grow more roots. This will also allow them to take up more nutrients. You could lay removable shorter strip's of fabric between each plant down the bed until the vines give enough ground cover if that's a concern. But you have done SO AMAZING!! I'm so proud of you and I don't even know you, so I can only imagine how much your family and parents are proud of you.

Hi Becky. The little orange pumpkins are the Jack-be-little pumpkins, and the mini-white ones are the Baby Boo pumpkins. They are both so darn cute and fun to decorate with. To help you remember which is which, just think of Casper the friendly ghost is white, I hope that helps.

Two pumpkin tips that have helped me get more in each vine: 1. If you give the vine the chance to grow along soil they will grow more roots which helps them get more nutrients and if part of your plant starts to get disease you can cut it away. 2. I trim back my vines when they branch so that they put more into the fruit and not into growing huge vines

Cinderella, Fairytale, and Musgee De Provonce are the same pumpkin. They are just called different things by the seed companies. If you saw comments in your planting videos, I also mentioned it there. Also, I had a wasp nest IN my fruit tree and when I went to pick the fruit, I stuck my hand IN the nest. Now I wear gloves and try to look ahead. 😊

U can pick small under ripe pumpkin & slice up & fry Like other have said about corn it's ripe when tassels r dried up. It's not they weren't pollinated, they were not done growing. I grew feed corn for years (160+/- acres). B4 I had lived there I had a friend who planted 5 acres of sweet corn to share with 4 families & some for church friends. The 3 ladies would pick & our kids would run the buckets to dump in bed of truck & 1 lady to rough shuck. Later we split into groups - 2 shucking & 2 blanching & bagging (then switch). In the 80s I shared harvesting with others... sharing makes work go fun & it doesn't seem to take as long. Then I moved away for the 90s & did it with my kids help only. When I moved back I had become disabled & have cut to little or no garden

I noticed your corn tassels were not dry. Also, the corn was not mature all the way to the top. All corn does not mature at the same time. Ripe: tassels are brown and dry. Fill along the outside of the cob. Make sure the cob is fat all the way to the top before you pick.

A little tip for growing great pumpkins, they are very heavy feeders. The spiky texture on their vines is small roots. Wherever they touch the ground, they will root in helping the pumpkins vine grab nutrients from the ground around them. They also need a lot of water. If you want your pumpkin to produce lots of pumpkins, you will have to give them lots of organic fertilizer and water. Now for the pumpkins that are ment to produce very large pumpkins you not only need to give them a lot of fertilizer and water but you also need to only let one pumpkin develop on the vine and some will keep the sun off the pumpkins skin in an effort to keep the skin from hardening. That way, the pumpkin can still grow and not split. Powder mildew happens at the end of each year, it is do the hot days and cool nights, but do not put any of the vines that have the disease back into your garden. The mildew can winter over, and you will have it earlier next year. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Pumpkins and gords are so much fun to grow! We also grow a bunch of squash.. Butternut, spaghetti, acorn, carnival, honeynut, sweet dumpling, and Zucchini.. So rewarding and huge yields! Next year I am going to try the North Georgia Candy Roaster Squash! Your little man is gonna love the pumpkins next year! We grow a pumpkin/squash patch every year and oh is it fun for little ones!
