On our homestead we do chemical-free gardening, grass-fed milk and beef, pastured eggs and broiler chickens, and free range children :) We love to go on adventures as a family, so if we're not workin on the farm, we're probably hiking or out getting ice cream. We're all into DIY, and being inventive and creative. We believe in homesteading that's sustainable, not just sustainable homesteading. For tomatoes I buy some little clips and clip the branches to the panels. Very easy to put on and take off. I reuse them every year. They just squeeze and clip.

@@a.p.5429Agreed! The clips take less effort, you don't have to measure out/eyeball the length, trim or tie anything, just clip and done. For years I had been using jute twine or soft rubber coated wire tie but not anymore. I used to get my twine and wite tie at Dollar Tree for a buck each and they would last a long time but Dollar Tree also carries the clips for the same price so I just swapped. I still keep the jute twine on hand though for all sorts of other uses like tying up bundles of herbs for drying, crafting and such. TOMATO CLIPS FOR THE WIN! 🎉🍅😂

I buy starts (in the house it's too hot to start them). I also use landscape fabric on the ground to keep the soil moist and cool (I don't have access to leaves). and when there are day's above 82F I throw a shade cloth over them. I live in a very hot full sun area and this works great for broccoli here. Keep trying and best of luck!

Hi Cody and Michelle, Love your garden, farm, animals, and family. For the loofah plant, the fruits (seeded) can actually be eaten when they are soft and green. Slice them and sauté with some butter and salt or add some to chicken soups. They are delicious, sweet, and very flavorful. Once they are brown and tough, then they will turn into loofahs. You do have one of the most beautiful gardens! Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Your garden is amazing! Wish I had that much growing space in the sun. Unfortunately most of my garden space is now under the shade of the fruit trees, so I'm forced to grow tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers and peppers on the roof of my workshop in containers, as it is the sunniest place. It works surprisingly good though, and this year I pruned some of the fruit trees more than usual, so I do have some raised beds in the garden as well. However I still didn't manage to make enough space for all the potatoes, onions and garlic I wanted to grow. But learning to grow better and better and transferring it to our kids is probably the best part of that journey, and you're a great inspiration for me and my family indeed, thank you very much for that!

We love your channel. I aspire to have a garden like yours. It is our second summer here. We live in Texas, and I have not successfully grown tomatoes here. I definitely didn't have any trouble before we moved to this area. People say it's the heat. Its always hot in Texas. We moved from Central Texas to Northwestern Texas. So, it's not a big change. We have blossoms, but they wither and fall off. My herbs are growing like crazy. We definitely have lots to learn. Thanks for sharing, and any tips would be appreciated.

With the trellis u’ll want 1 luffa plant per side of the trellis. And u will still need to weekly trim the plant once it gets to the top. When u trim it, it will help the plant focus on the first luffas it makes. Which is good cuz otherwise your luffas wont finish before a frost. They are so beautiful but do take some active maintenance.

I’m growing loofah for the first time this year myself! Mine are on a cattle panel arch trellis, and it is way plenty strong enough! We have discovered that if you pick them young, you can cook them up like you would zucchini and even make a zucchini bread out of Young loofah. You have to pick them small though. We’ve been sticking to about the diameter of a quarter. I’ve put away a lot of graded loofah for bread as well. I think I currently have 8 to 10 bags of loofah ready for individual loaves of bread. they are portioned out in one and a quarter cup bags because that’s what my recipe calls for. I’ve always had an impossible time with the zucchini. I can’t wait to see what y’all do with it! They are in my outer garden bed tour. I have five plants on a double cattle panel arch trellis. I know, I know. Already too small! Lol ha ha ha.😂

Hey, you can eat loofahs, did you know? My family used to grow the kind with splines, that look like giant okra pods - we called it "running okra". We cooked it in a not very healthy but extremely delicious way - and I urge you to try this at least once. (1) Harvest gourds when large but not too fibrous; (2) trim off splines and slice into thin (1/8 inch thick) rounds, like hamburger dill pickles, but bigger diameter; (3) lightly salt each slice and make stacks 6-10 high on a plate in the fridge - this helps extract moisture; (4) after maybe 30 minutes when the slices have lost moisture, coat each slice in flour; (5) pan fry till crispy and lightly golden; (6) remove from oil with a spatula and let drain on paper towels on a plate. They are delicious like home-made potato chips or fries, but have a very different delicious flavor. Enjoy!!!!!
