Heels were originally created for men ''High-heeled shoes were first worn in the 10th century as a way to help the Persian cavalry keep their shoes in their stirrups. Since then, men's heels have gone through varied cultural meanings: symbolizing high social stature, military prowess, refined fashionable taste, and the height of 'cool'.''

when i was in hs the girls from 9th to 12 were gathered together to tell us we needed to dress better and not look like "ladies of the night" most of us wore sweats or leggings with oversized hoodies. the teachers who called us ladies of the night had to make an apology to all of us the next morning because the school had so many calls about it

I was a very vocal kid. End of senior year i got stopped for dress code violation on the way from the bathroom (she actively sought me out due to teacher complaint) because, drum roll.... I had pj pants on. My entire body was covered except my hands neck and head. Yet the staff actively gave warm welcoming to other girls... I asked her how i was violating dress codes when the girls walking by had shorts so short they're only underwear and half had their labia showing? (Rule was like 1inch above knee) she got flusteree and demanded we call my parents. I told them exactly that and they laughed before coming in to talk to her and the principal. I got in trouble at home for being rude but lightly, 0 at school lol. Dress codes are just bullshit half the time

At my last school, we had a pretty lax dress code. So much to a point, that a girl showed up, wearing a blanket over herself, and it turned out She was only wearing a bra and capris. She and a boy were found in the lounge doing the hanky-panky, and after that day, blankets were no longer allowed at school, no matter what. Oh, and hell yeah free the ankle!!!❤

The thing I always thought was the craziest was if your shorts go above your knees or you have less then 2 inch straps on your shirt you get sent home… but the cheerleading uniforms, that girls wear to class, cover less then my underwear and have spaghetti straps. Uniforms are out if dress code but fine because they’re uniforms.

I beg to argue that those who don't dress for spirit week are NOT necessarily hated by students. There were some days I dressed for (actually bought regular PJs to wear for pajama days) but near the end of my 32 years of teaching, I stopped dressing up. I grew to not like spirit dress up days because of how disruptive the students were on dress up days. I taught 7th and 8th science and the last few years student misbehavior was out of control!! And my students, for the most part, loved me and my class!

When I was teaching Elementary Art the principal said I could not wear leggings with my dresses only panty hose or bare legs.... so sexist also I was teaching k-5 if I'm sitting on my carpet with kindergarteners I'm not wanting to flash anyone... so not sure what you think that rule is doing... not only that but as an art teacher it was one of the only ways I had left to express myself. I like to wear fun leggings with art prints. I had previously been told I had to dye my hair because i had a couple blue streaks in it as well so not only did they take my hair but my leggings and what felt like my sense of self I did not last long at that school...

When I was in high school they came out with a dress code video.. and I shit you not.. the video was entirely of what girls cannot wear. I got in school suspension because I had a quarter size hole in my jeans exactly 1 inch above my knee. I was told it could be distracting to young men… but another girl was wearing a mini skirt then looked like she was about to go clubbing.. when I pointed that out, they said “ this isn’t about her. This is about you.” Couldn’t wear certain tank tops because their shoulders could distract boys .. and one person said it might make male teachers uncomfortable

Technically, heels were invented originally for men. If you look at a lot of old portraits, men often posed in heeled shoes to make their legs look stronger. Women didn't adopt heels into their fashion until the 1700s, if I'm not mistaken.

I worked at a high school in China as an EFL teacher. I taught senior 1 (sophomores) while my dorm neighbor taught senior 2 (juniors). She had a very eclectic look that often included local ethnic clothing. Her students loved it. At the end of the school year the principal asked her if she could wear more “Western” clothes. She had those kind of clothes, but preferred local clothing. The last couple weeks of school she dressed in her “Western” clothes. The students asked her what was wrong that she didn’t want to wear Chinese clothes anymore. We tended to be honest with our students so she told them the principal had asked her to stop wearing Chinese clothes. Those kids had over 200 rules they had to follow. Any infractions could cost them points for getting into university. This was a boarding school, so the students stayed there all week, only going home on the weekends. They were not allowed to shower more than once during the week. I had students that would try to sneak out of my class to go shower. This class tended to break rules and my English class was not their focus. For these few who were not going to pass their English exams, I looked the other way when they”snuck out” to shower. I figured their hygiene was important too. The few classes I saw them for were not going to get them up to National English test standards when I had taught fourth graders with better English language skills.

I started teaching in 1988, and we had to wear skirts or dresses five days a week. I switched schools in 1993 and we could wear slacks, blouses and nice shoes. In 2001 I taught in an alternative High School and we could wear jeans, T-shirts and gym shoes. In 2010 the school board passed a strict dress code. We could not wear jeans, T-shirts or sneakers. Shirt collars could graze the collar bone but not go farther down, no sneakers were allowed, tight pants were prohibited, skirt/dresses should be no shorter than above the knee. Why? The school board was planning to make and enforce a stronger dress code for students the following year. The school board wanted the teacher's dress code to be stricter than students.

When I was in high school, we had a dress code situation/debate regarding messaging on graphic T-shirts. I graduated HS in ‘99 and Marilyn Manson was hitting it big (and ruffling a lot of feathers). There were some students (let’s call them group A) receiving dress code violations for wearing MM (and other similar artists) shirts to school and were being forced to change or turn their shirts inside out because other students (Group B) found the Manson shirts offensive. Group A countered by saying that if they were required to change their shirt some kid in Group B found a Manson T-shirt offensive to his/her personal beliefs, then any student that was wearing a shirt with any kind of Christian message on it should also required to change as they (Group A) found the messages on those were just as offensive to their own personal beliefs as MM was to Group B. They argues that the rules needed to be fair to all students (not just those whose beliefs aligned with your own). I grew up in a small town in the Bible Belt which was obviously a large role in the debate but I would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced similar situations.

Former student story I will die on the hill of dress codes are stupid. Both of my middle schools had a "no joggers" rule. At my second middle school, We had a spirit day where we had to wear camo. The only camo I owned was a pair of cargo pants that had elastic in the ankles. I got sent to the office before the second bell for class to start even rang. My mom literally had to drive from work(which was an hour away) all the way home to bring me pants. A year later, I got dress codes for a dress that was an inch too short on the sides... ON THE SIDES. They refused to let me call my mom to have her bring me different clothes. I had to wear the school issued , hardly ever washed, property of (school name) shirt and sweats.

High heels were actually a fashion statement for high-class Western European men, who were inspired by the masculinity of the Persian calvary (and their heeled shoes for riding). Like most fashion at the time, it ended up "trickling down" to women when skirt hems went up to ANKLE LENGTH and their shoes could actually be seen. Eventually, after the two world wars, the decline of the nobility, and the rise of the working-class man, high-heels found a place in the woman's sex industry. Except now the heels were higher so that woman's leg muscles had be used when wearing them, giving the legs a "sexier" shape. This cemented them in modern fashion as a sign of ideal femininity even outside of the bedroom. Wearing them in a professional setting is, however, a remnant of the push and pull of woman's rights in the later half of the 20th century to today as well as fashion trends throughout the decades. Hope this helps! Also, flip-flop high heels exist. Not sure where they fall on the list of acceptable shoes, but I know that shorter women tend to prefer them and I did have a proctor once who jumped down from the top of a desk while wearing them. Surprised she didn't hurt herself, tbh.

At my school the only really enforced dress code rule (other than dress appropriately) is no sweat pants and it’s the best thing ever. We have certain areas (mainly for the older students) that you are not allowed to enter if you wear your sweatpants. It has to do with the moral of we’re here to be productive and awake and that won’t work if you’re wearing your pjs and you won’t be doing that at your workplace most likely so get used to it (to be fair I’m at a gymnasium in Germany; so the “highest” form of high school where they basically put all of the students that are more likely to go to university and study there)

High heels have a long history with many uses, including: Stability while riding In the 10th century, Persian cavalry soldiers began wearing high-heeled shoes to keep their feet in stirrups and to shoot arrows more effectively. The modern cowboy boot is a direct descendant of this tradition. Upper-class status In ancient Egypt, wearing heels was a sign of wealth. Keeping feet clean In the 16th century, European streets were dirty with sewage and garbage, so men and women wore heels to keep their feet clean. Ceremonial purposes In ancient Egypt, high heels were worn for ceremonial purposes, as depicted in murals. Military prowess In the 17th century, European aristocrats adopted heels as a symbol of virility and military prowess. King Louis XIV passed an edict in 1670 that only nobility could wear heels. Salsa and rumba In the early 1900s, Cuban heels became popular as men's shoes for dancing salsa and rumba. They eventually became popular for women as well.

My old district in another state didn't have one. However, my current school does. We can only wear black, white, charcoal gray, navy, and royal blue. They must be solid, with no prints/patterns. I don't have a problem with the colors. Blue is my favorite color. But I have a lot of black and white pieces, like houndstooth etc. I can't wear them. Nothing with writing on it unless it's the school logo. However, I have pushed the envelope by wearing dove gray instead of charcoal gray. I have worn black / white t-shirts with Black History or Women's History Months written on them. On May 21st, I wear my black Biggie Smalls shirt and on June 16th, my black Tupac shirt. Neither has words on them, but I sometimes wear a button down shirt over them.😉 Not allowed to wear sweat pants or leggings, and I heard in the past that they used to not let people wear tights. But now, if you wear a dress or a shirt past your hips, you can wear it. Every few months, they send a mass email out that there are people not following the dress code. It's usually a few people but we all get shamed. I wish they would just email the people they have a problem with directly. The last time we were sent a mass email, I was reflecting on if I had done something thecday in question. We're not supposed to wear sneakers. Well, I wear Sketchers because I'm old, voluptuous 😊, and diabetic and I need my feet to be comfortable. So, I had my doctor write me a note becayse I didn't want them to come for me. Then, a couple of months later, HR revised the dress code for K-12 to say that if you want to wear sneakers, you need to provide a doctor's note. Wild! I guess, I'm a trendsetter.😁
