Do you need a DOC concession to use a drone on public land for public viewing? Or all go?
@altitudehunting

Yeah you need a concession, and must apply with civil aviation rules.

Great video. You comment on DOC using 1080 or culling the deer if you don't shoot one or two is very misinformed. It's not actually legal to intentionally poison deer with 1080 and they certainly don't do any deer culling in the South Island (apart from one very small spot no where near this spot).

Your bang on mate - DOC is not a threat to these animals - cant target deer with 1080. The biggest risk to those stags is a $2 increase in the feral venison price.
@johnmead8437
@johnmead8437 3 ай бұрын
@@altitudehunting Deer can legally be targeted with 1080, but they aren't. The fact some (seems far less than the noisy lobby claim) get it as collateral with possum pellet operations is incidental, not targeted. Every pellet a scabby deer eats is one less for the possums. An observation from 1000's of hours following post 1080 groups is about the same number of live deer were seen as poisoned ones located. & the latter stink and was using a dog, so not much upwind was missed. A coarse estimate was between 25 & 60% were killed, & have seen a low kill in one area the deer were close to starving, & dead ones where highly palatable feed was readily available. No clear explanation for why deer are sometimes really hard to find immediately post drop, have seen that a few times, but their back much faster than breeding could repopulate. But 1080 used as approved for deer (& goats) is effective, it gets about 90% + done right. However it might be difficult to apply effectively in this country (effective foot shooting or aerial would probably work ok). Colloquially known as Gorilla Snot, & few survive who would have used it. Sort of stuff kept up the sleeve if foot & mouth gets here, or for selected sites are managed for minimum deer.
@johnmead8437
@johnmead8437 3 ай бұрын
@@georgio5991 Not up to date with current DoC politics, but deer have been a major problem for about a decade in most places now. & DoC will eventually wake up, or be woken, and their reactions are sometimes knee-jerk & not very effective (like the tahr). Encouraging leaving the best quality stags (& spikers) is one management concession that has potential, including by the aerial operators. These are a small percentage, and getting rid of the substandard ones enhances the herd. If DoC shooters get into it they'd likely target the big ones, & it's the women & children that do the damage. And many would not have been seen on this trip. There might be a case for putting a bounty on them, there is for tahr. Indignation wails from some. A bounty would improve carcass recovery economics. & while shooting & leaving a carcass isn't waste (it's recycling), commercial opportunity or domestic meat recovery has appeal.
