You should definitely check out The Platters if you haven’t. They have the definitive cover of “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” which always reminds me of the movie “Always.” And you can very often find old appearances of these groups on video. I know The Platters were filmed singing “The Great Pretender” which is another biggie. Also, I’m not sure whether they’re doowop or not but The Drifters were outstanding. Check out “Up on the Roof” and “Under the Boardwalk” for them. Great set of pipes on the lead Penguin here, though. What a magical voice he had! This song does remind me of “Back to the Future” but also an episode of an 80s tv show where a couple who had been murdered during the 50s are haunting a place and a detective has to figure out the events that happened. A jealous would be lover killed them both and in the black and white flashback this song was playing on the car radio at the time. Very eerie combo.

As you said, this is a prime example of the Doo Wop sound so prominent in the '50's that laid the groundwork for the harmony of R & B in the '60's. (This is an audio version of them singing it live in 1956: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3e9gJ6sh6mFrJo) The earliest visual video of them singing it is from 1973 on The Midnight Special: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opbHpXefbN17itE. There is a clear similarity with this and "Tears On My Pillow" kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6nNgmaDlNtqrsU because when The Imperials had difficulty grasping the complex background vocals originally outlined for the song, Little Anthony suggested they just use the harmony from "Earth Angel." New Edition covered both songs on their Cd "Under the Blue Moon", which featured a surprise visit from Little Anthony during :Tears On My Pillow": kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZucaotrjal7qrM. As quiet as it's kept, the doo wop sound was even present in the early work of The Spinners, such as "In My Diary" kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmSnnZdoeMuIfpY, (led by G.C. Cameron, the same guy that led them on "It's A Shame"), the work of the Dells and Barry White's production of Love Unlimited's "I Belong To You": kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpOck2Vph5qklaM.

From rock to disco to girl bands to boy bands to easy listening to dance to rap to hip hop....... Streisand, Backstreet Boys, Aerosmith, La Bouche, John Denver, Connie Francis, all of the one hit wonders (and there are PLENTY!)........ It's all "Top 40" to me. Then there are the great songs that never hit the top 40, or the charts at all! I'm just a mainstream & album rock person. This song came out in December 1954. Fun fact: THREE different artists hit the top 40 with "Earth Angel" in 1955. The Penguins were the first. :)
