In my opinion, It's not a product of missing respect but rather the acknowledgement that whether or not a girl gets married is not up to the family and especially the father since this was rooted in the idea that the girl/woman is her father's property until married where she is "given away". This, however, seems outrageous, archaic to most modern men and as such they choose not to ask the father but rather the person who's life it's gonna affect.
