Everybody talks about Kanami and MISA's battle, and the lyrics, and Saiki's singing and stage presence. Go back and listen. 2nd half of the duet (not a solo so no credit for pausing btw), Akane and Miku providing support underneath is stunning. The fact that Miku, especially, as she is wont to do, lets the bassist go out front and jam while she provides the rhythmic foundation is remarkable. She really reminds me of Ron Wood or John Lennon. How many other rhythm guitarists can you name who hold their own on rhythm guitar, share lead and do backing vocals and write most of the lyrics. I swear, if she were a solo artist she would be even more spectacular. 🕊️

aka: the "Band-Maid sound". Kobato keeps the songs grounded so Akane, Mincho & MISA can go off and do whatever they want to enhance the songs. Just like all her backing vocals which really don't feel like backing vocals. And has been proven in the past, if Saiki ever falls offstage, Kobato can jump in on lead vocals until Saiki climbs back on stage.
@MusicMike7478 ай бұрын
Band Maid is ridiculously consistent. The music from Lollapalooza and Yokohama are almost identical, with Saiki’s vocals being even better here. Mincho also changes her initial 8 bars slightly. MISA’s hybrid pop in her first 8 stands out here. Not sure if she did it before? (Except in Shambles, of course)

The lyrics were written by Saiki! I heard a story behind it, but I'm not going to put it here because I don't know if it's accurate. Also, when I first saw them live, I didn't appreciate Saiki as much as the musicianship in the band. But when I saw them live, I was absolutely smitten by Saiki. I was also lucky enough to be about 6 feet away from the stage--and she will notice you and interact with you when you are that close!

A welcome note of caution as there doesn't seem to be any support (from Saiki or anyone else) for the story that's going the rounds. Until there is, it's probably best just to regard it as a brilliant piece of imaginative writing by Saiki.

I genuinely can't cope with how ridiculously good this is. If they get any better than this I might explode. It's interesting that you talk about Saiki not being overshadowed by all the stuff going on here... in their more recent stuff, like Hate?, most of the song consists of Misa, Kanami and Akane soloing around each other constantly, and their patterns are barely, if ever, repeated. Yet it sounds cohesive, which I attribute to Saiki and yer lass Miku. Take those two out and it's just shredding madness. So to my mind, it's not only that she's not overshadowed - she's the spine. She's one of the main pillars holding this thing up. If you like the more ballady, emotional side of BM, may I suggest you do About Us (the official live version)?

Got to agree with your Scientific Assessment of this song. Yes, I certainly do not wish these lyrics on even my worst enemy (though apparently Saiki, who wrote the lyrics, thinks differently). This is a really nice stage show. Love Kanami dancing up into Misa's face, and little things like how they kneel so the audience can see the person soloing better. It's little things like that that let you know they're always thinking about the fans and each other. Each member steals your attention away from the others, but just because the writing is so dense, and they're all so good, not because they're trying to hog the spotlight. I think parts of it are played cleaner at Lolla, but they may have just changed how they wanted to play some parts, like the slide out of the tapping in Kanami's solo. My favorite part of the Lolla video is the transition out of the solo duel, where Miku comes back in, and she and Kanami do a little turn in unison with big smiles on their faces. I'm glad they could play Yokohama and put on a cool show that made use of their space, but I think I prefer it when they're not spread out so much from each other and have more random little interactions.

'Onset' is good, and it's LIVE, but for me, 'Without Holding Back' is a better instrumental. But yes, somebody is pissed off, and it's Saiki. Miku is the band's lyricist, with some input from Saiki occasionally. She is the arbiter of cool. If she feels a line isn't cool enough for her to sing, she will send Miku back to the drawing board. But this song she wrote on her own. So yeah, she's pissed. She said she particularly liked the way the English "I Hate You" felt when she said it. As you may know, the Japanese aren't very direct. That's considered rude. And they used to chop heads for being rude. So it's a very polite society and they tend to talk around difficult subjects. In fact the ones who can speaks some English tend to use it to express themselves amongst each other, and a whole new personality with it, just as English speakers get more polite when speaking Japanese. It's an interesting phenomenon. The language lends itself to the culture.

It feels inspired by '40s swing and latin music. You are incorrect about the verses being a wall of noise. The drums, bass, and guitar stuff happening during the first two verses is f*cking awesome, espesically Kanami's bendy, semi-dissonant leads. Totally drives the malignant tone of the lyrics home. Saiki wrote the lyrics. Moral: don't get on Saiki's bad side if you don't want a damning song about you blasted all around the world. I believe it is her response to a man cheating his partner ... who is a friend of Saiki. Saiki's intense loyalty comes out here -- with a vengeance. My understanding is the friend was more forgiving than Saiki. Of course you ignored the ballot. It wouldn't be Markabusi's channel without you being contrary. We don't come here to be bored, we come here to ask "What!? What is he doing!?" The best way to appreciate Band-Maid is to fall in love with each member, one after the after. I had my spell of being in love with Saiki. She is a great front woman -- especially because she is the second shyest member of the band (with Misa shyest). She's a commanding front woman, and growing more and more confident.
