As a blue jays fan, this is sad. The guy can be super fun sometimes, but an absolute head case at other times. But this latest incident is the last straw, he needs to go. He had a good year in '22, then somehow came back in even worse shape in '23 and stunk the place out. Then he packs his bags and goes home. Nice character. And the "beef" with Gerrit Cole? Ya, pretty funny now. Cole will win the Cy Young, big baby quitter Manoa will just fade away...

Roy Halliday when he started was terrible. He got sent down to the minors, took it as a chance to work and learn and when recalled became a Hall of Famer. He did not take it as a demotion. He looked at it as a chance to become better. Alek thinks because he did so well in 2022 that he doesn’t have to work. He thinks he is owed a starting position in the majors. Baseball is not about equity on the field, it is about merit. If you do well you stay in the majors. If you do poorly you get sent down to work on improvement, traded or DFA’d. Your individual performance is only secondary to how well you play as a team mate.

@@mr.benchwarmer well, not to sound like an old codger, which I am, it seems this is a bit of a problem with the newer generation. There does not seem to be that level of taking personal responsibility as before. A feeling of self entitlement although considering Alek’s history it would seem odd. I think he has some psychological issues where he takes things as personal attacks and thinks he knows best. I would hope he finds the help he needs and accepts it or he will disappear.

Last year Yusei Kikuchi was having a brutal season. Told his manager he wanted to be sent down because he was costing the Jays wins. Dude worked his ass off all winter, learned English and came back as a dominant pitcher. That's the sort of guy I want on my team and that's the sort of guy I like rooting for. He may not have the raw talent that Alec has but I'll take a good attitude and work ethic any day of the week.

My concern with the Halladay comp is that Manoah's just had a bit too much success in the bigs already compared to where Halladay was during his nightmare season. Yes, he'd tossed a few gems but he wasn't Doc yet, just a young prospect with a big arm who still needed to learn how to pitch. Manoah's meteoric rise and fall is a lot more comparable to someone like Rick Ankiel - especially with the control issues - which gives me some serious cause for concern. My hope is that Manoah can sit down with either a former player or some kind of psychiatrist this offseason who can get it through to him that staying in the bigs is not about past performance, but about constantly fighting for your job no matter what you've done, and he can go out there next year with a better mindset and try to win his job back.

As a Blue Jays fan I was a pretty big fan of Manoah the last couple seasons but this year I've really flipped on that. His cocky attitude is fine when hes able to back it up but after being so terrible this year while still being a cocky asshole, he just comes off like a guy who thinks hes better than he is. After finding out he wasn't even willing to go down to AAA to work on his stuff for the team and fans who are counting on him, it just feels like hes spitting on all of us because he thinks hes too good to have to go down to the minors. I'd love it if he could get back to his old self on the mound for the Jays but at this point I really wont be sad to see him go if they trade him.

The unstated question is: What does the rest of the team think about Alex Manoa? Do the other players think Manoa is a clubhouse cancer the Blue Jays should jettison ASAP or is he seen as just another player who is struggling to regain his form? And someone who occasionally acts like a jerk, but not to his fellow teammates. When the Dodgers were dealing with Trevor Bauer; even before the sexual assault allegations, it was rumored that Clayton Kershaw told Dodger management that Bauer was bad news. Aside from Manoa's lackluster performance, If he is disruptive to the team he needs to be moved or let go. It's called addition by subtraction.

Honestly like some of the other comments, I think Alec has some growing up to do, maybe the Jays should send him to some kind of mindfulness retreat and start over. I don't see the urgency, to deal or release him for essentially nothing, he is still on a rookie scale contract. He has obviously fallen into a situation where he at current doesn't have the mental or physical tools to sort himself out right now, but that doesn't mean by any stretch that he never will. Young people do mature, and most people sort out their problems. With Cy Young level upside, and his cheap contract you might as well play the long game with him.

All this stuff about Alek "giving up" is total BS. He hasn't said that, and no one within the organization has said that. Are there a lot of questions? Of course, but treating people with a bit of grace, rather than going straight off the deep end would be a much more reasonable approach. A story came out today that he's been getting a ton of arm injections over the past month, and they've been doing a lot of tests and haven't found anything structural, but the EVIDENCE points to something going on with his arm (from his perspective) even if they haven't been able to figure it out yet. Why not give him the benefit of the doubt and simmer down on the rhetoric?

Jays would have kept Alek in the rotation if Ryu had not had a successful comeback from his Tommy John surgery. So he was sent down to AAA because they didn't need a 6th starter for the countdown to the playoffs. And Alek did report to Buffalo eventually. Most of what we are hearing is rumor and speculation. Cole with the Yankees deserved to be called out by Manoah for Cole's cheating with illegal sticky substances that increase spin rate, control and pitching performance unfairly compared to honest pitchers and unfairly disadvantage batters.

Im from toronto and i always liked aleks firey personality and moxie. I think every fan likes it when one of their players will do that stuff. Never liked when he would intentionally hit guys tho thats just clown material. And when he was talking shit in the off season, i remember he was saying gerritt cole was the biggest cheater in mlb history, i was like man just shut up. He makes it too much about himself and forgets to play baseball. I think youre right saying he has too much pride. Its good to play with fire in ya, but you have to manage a balance between confidence and arrogance.

Both Manoa and Vladdy need to come.to.the realization that they are in the majors and being 30lbs overweight ain't going to cut it. Being a pro is a year round full time job and being in shape and fit prolongs careers and increases performance on the field. Ignoring that fact is just going to lead to them both having short and less than stellar careers.

I agree for the most part. Some players handle it well ( like CC) but others like Pablo Sandoval ruin their careers over it

Dodgers can use his pitching and fiery temper because they went meekly into the offseason yet again after another dominating regular season. If they get Ohtani that would be a pretty good rotation.

I would like to think there is more to Alec this year we may not know about. We discuss alot about just talking, I am not saying mental issues, but I am saying we are assuming that he is being a spoilt idiot. I absolutely would like him to understand our Hall of Fame pitcher, in Vancouver one of the very best players in our Ring of Honor, a fielder that was sent down and had to ride with his father to the minors. He is not in the head space he needs, Blue Jays have said nothing by the way. Lets hope he made the move known and the Jays said. Hey get your confidence, your mind at ease. No one is talking but lots are speculating.

Let me stop you right there. You said this man. His attitude is childish. He is better called the boy in a man's body. And while we are at it, the most successful Managers of Professional sports teams are good judges of character. If you hire good character they will be winners in their sport. Ross Atkins, is not mature himself let alone a good judge of character. The line up in TO has too many children in men's bodies.

Players like "Fat Toad" Manoah should just be banished from the sport in a agreement among all teams to not let the guy play in the LG anymore and make any money. Let the selfish players and trouble makers go back to flippin burgers at MDonalds again. These players are toxic to teams no matter how much potential talent they might have.

I guess you forgot to consider how the Blue Jays overused Alek Manoah in his first year as a pitcher. It has been known since 1987 that young pitchers under 25 have to increase their innings pitched by maximum 40 innings per year to prevent fatigue and injury to the pitching arm -- because Manoah was such a high performer he was kept in the rotation and pitched an additional 80+ innings (twice the proper increase) in order to get the Jays to the playoff rounds. So his performance decline is most likely on the Jays organization. And he was underpaid given his incredible first year with the Jays (less than $1 million).
