Something that I want to point out about _Five Nights at Freddy's_ is that the reason why the antagonists are animatronics was because that was practically what Scott Cawthon was limited to. His previous game, _Chipper & Sons Lumber Co.,_ had character designs that were criticized for being uncanny as animatronics. This in turn, provided a limitation that Scott used to his advantage by making a horror game that truly utilizes his unintentionally uncanny design philosophy. That right there really goes to show how one's limitations can amplify their creativity. (I also fondly remember telling this fact to my sister while we waited in the movie theater for the _Five Nights at Freddy's_ Movie, and we both bursted into laughter at how Jim Sterling's review of _Chipper & Sons Lumber Co._ accidentally spawned a horror game franchise, and how it lead to the movie we were watching.)
@DeathnoteBB7 ай бұрын
Yeah it really shows how people are taking the shallowest interpretation of a trend and copying that. FNaF was perfect because Scott was good at animatronic characters. The fact that they characters were mascots was not the main pull of the game, it was just the set dressing. The gameplay and terror-inducing atmosphere was what people loved about it. Meanwhile most mascot horror cashgrabs are just “Oh scary thing but in kid’s playplace!” and that’s usually it. No substance. Just “Ooh childhood but scary!”
@hitthere77226 ай бұрын
@@DeathnoteBB Honestly its just been a big downward spiral of Mascot Horror It starts with FNAF, wherein the game was created out of spite toward reviews of his character designs and artstyle, which then lead into BATIM (Which messed up in setting a deadline then having to rush to meet it), which later caused Poppy Playtime to pop up and show that being a massive cashgrab franchise can actually work, and from there the ball rolled downhill *fast*
@j0kerpaws2285 ай бұрын
hi, this isn’t entirely true! scott had many many games before chipper, and most of them focused around robots/animatronics because its what he models and enjoys modeling best. when he tried to make non robots, like in chipper, they just still felt like them so he gave in and started doing robots again.

A lot of these games plots are usually something like: These people went missing, lets go back to the place they went missing and see if we can find them. But what I would like to see is a game where we play AS the missing person. I'd make a game like that myself but I have no idea how to code yet.
@ansrfururactions9 ай бұрын
Then learn how to when you can, if you want to make something, do it. There are thousands of tutorials online on how to use various engines and how to program different mechanics of a game. Unity is a good starting place for its balance of simplicity in versatility (though do be careful about its recent policies), and unreal is really f#^king powerful. If you really want to make a game, make a game. Yes, game development is hard. Even simple projects can take days if you're inexperienced. But that's true for any other art form, and it's definitely not impossible for a person like you to make a game. The many solo devs out there prove that.

aquarium is making my imagination run wild, omg. There was always something slightly haunting about aquariums when I was a kid, even though I loved them. Like if I got separated from my parents, I'd be lost in identical hallways and shark tunnels forever other possible locations: a mall (especially ones with a kid play center with those plasticky play objects), an arcade, a county fair. Idk if other religions do this but mormons have a play room for young kids while adults are doing church stuff, and a church would be _rife_ with imagery and spaces that could be either innocent or haunting depending on the circumstances. Plus you get to play off of religious imagery, which is a time-tested winner for horror games
@SuperSpeed219 ай бұрын
I don't remember markiplier wording. But I sum it around as these horror games taking idea from FNAF, Guardian of Bam Bam, and Poppy's Playtime lack suspense. Sure you can have your game be about you being an ex-employee, a parent, or a detective/cop or hey even a repairman going to an abandoned place where these mascot for kids are alive because of some experiments done with kids and/or adults and you're there to find the kids or find the truth what happens. But when your game horror aspect is forcing the monster away or the task they have you do is mind-numbing difficult, then your game isn't about horror, it's about taking someone else idea that got popular and you decided to just rip that off and make it worse.
@DeathnoteBB7 ай бұрын
That’s how I feel about a lot of the monster designs too. They’re not really impactful. It’s always just a humanoid figure with sharp teeth and a big mouth. I was listening to this without watching the video, and when she mentioned the bear, in my head it was a cool creature that was scary because it hunted you down. …And then I come back to watch it at 21:57 and it’s just a weirdly smooth teddy bear with too many teeth. Like, sure it is scary in the sense that it’s a subversion of what one expects from your teddy bears, and big mouth with teeth is dangerous to humans. But overall “big barely detailed bipedal thing has huge mouth with sharp teeth” is just so overused as a concept.
@DeathnoteBB7 ай бұрын
Case in point: 26:55 “This Guy”! He looks creepy as hell, even with the aforementioned “big mouth sharp teeth” cliche. But he’s not humanoid, its some weird unsettling seal thing. It’s scary in an uncanny valley way and the unique design makes it more memorable.

Hi there! I'm one of the composers on Playtown 2. I had no involvement with the first Playtown, but I've been following development of the second game quite closely ever since I was brought onboard. And something that immediately stood out is that the developers basically just make things up on the spot as they go along. There isn't really a complete blueprint that they're working with, so they usually make one section and then plan the next one afterwards. And I assume this is how the first game was made as well. This can either lead to something that feels like a mess because of a lack of planning, or something that feels oddly charming because of its weird direction. But I do recommend giving the second game a chance when it releases in June, as the lead developer (TNP Games) has said that he did try to improve on the first one. It's a bigger game, with more stuff to do. There are more characters, with voice acting now included (featuring a few KZbin cameos). And it's also going to be sold at a reduced price, since TNP Games has acknowledged that $8 might have been too pricey for what the first game was. Also, fun fact: Combo Bomb Games, the developer of Toytopia, is a friend of TNP Games and also worked on Playtown 1 and 2. The MUZY developer was also in TNP Games' community Discord server. So it all feels like a tight knit community.

Every time I see another mascot horror game, I always try to make one up myself even if my go-to medium is writing since I can’t code. 1. Runaway teen stumbles into an abandoned facility and decides that it’ll be fine to sleep in for a night or two. 2. Random events start happening around, nothing too major. 3. Teen wanders around and solves a few puzzle because they can’t sleep. 4. Accidentally unleashes the marketable mascots and now has to survive. Another thing I don’t really like is why they’re always silent. I play _Little Nightmares_ and a few other games with SP, but it always slightly annoys me in mascot horror when the other characters are voiced, like in _Poppy Playtime._

What a great video. Not only do I just like hearing people talk about games, but also giving out tips to aspiring game devs. For me, I've been creating games for a good amount of years but I've recently started working on my own original horror game (yes, mascot. im sorry) and am enjoying the vision so much. I've made it farther in production than any other game i've created and I'm really excited to put it out once it's ready. Great video, you earn a subscribe from mee!

I have an idea for a mascot horror game, but I have no idea how to develop games. Here’s the idea: You play as a reporter/journalist who wants to make it big, so you decide to make a report about an old abandoned play place called “Puppet Land” (I might change the name later). In Puppet Land, you find four marionette mascots; Bella the Ballerina, Pat the Princess, Carly the Clown, and Missy the Marionette. Each of these marionettes have a specific play area. The Dance Studio, the Castle, the Fairgrounds, and one other (still figuring it out). That’s the main theme, but I’m still figuring everything out. What do you guys think?

How to make a good mascot horror: 1) Make a likable main character. Saying honestly, I'm tired of playing as a faceless nobody, who doesn't even have a shadow. I want to know who I'm playing as. Because really, I would never go to a scary abandoned building where something happened alone, I'm not that dumb. Player ≠ The main character. Give the main character a goal, a personality. Why the heck he needs to go to that abandoned toy factory? Give us a valid reason! Heck, even "Something called me here and I couldn't resist for some reason" would be okay! Tell us that the person sneaked into the abandoned building to find his best friend, who went missing there a few days prior, for example. Or make the character a first-responder, who just HAS TO be in the places where catastrophes happen, they have no choice. Or make the character a dumb teenager, who got inside to get some views on the spooky video, but eventually got sucked in a paranormal event that will get him killed or traumatized! The personality matters as well. How your character reacts to the monsters? What does he do? Does he fight? Runs away, maybe? Or freezes into spot? 2) Don't give the player a weapon or give something, that the player will have to use sparingly. Make them feel completely helpless. For example, give the player a gun, and then drastically cut on the ammo to make them save each bullet. Or make the sound draw everyone closer to the player. And don't give any alternatives. Give each weapon a disadvantage the player will have to cope with. 3) Fit the aesthetic of what you're making. If it is a daycare - make it look like one. The designs of monsters ALSO must fit. 4) Make a straightforward storyline. Character comes - ends up in a sticky situation - deals with it - ending. Don't make it last 34 chapters with 2928261 twists, long horrors are not horrors anymore, they're adventures with horror elements (unless the chapters are short). 5) Give the player breaks from the spooks. Add cheery locations, friendly characters or safe zones where the player can rest and relax. And then throw them in the scary segment again. 6) Suspense, it's all about suspense. If you make a labyrinth with a monster, which you then should traverse back, at first traversal, don't put any monster in. Make the player think, that someone is with them, using sounds. And when the player has to go back, THEN put the monster in. And don't make the sections with the monster too long! People get tired of being scared easily. Make the game on contrasts, so the horror sections would feel as a sudden whiplash. 7) Basically, make the game as traumatizing for young children as you can. Just to make sure, that if the kid watches an Elsagate garbage and decides to play the original (questionable, but maybe?), they'll get traumatized for life and never touch the game ever again. Or ramp up the difficulty, so young players simply wouldn't be interested in the game. I have an idea myself, but I'm a lazy butt. James, the older brother of the main character, Lila, is obsessed with paranormal. After hearing about a small toy shop, which holds something sinister (as people say), he immediately ventures there to find something and satisfy his curiosity and... Dissapears. His younger sister, Lila, loves her big brother a lot, so after police doesn't find him, she sneaks inside the same toy shop out of desperation. She takes some food, water and a weapon in case she gets stuck there. And ventures inside. Gimmicks - you can use different toys for different purposes. Teddy to calm down (maybe there would be a specific bar), robots to explore small spaces, ect. Also I liked first 3 chapters of Garten of BanBan. Fight me :").

For as flawed as Security Breach was, the entire map actually LOOKED like it was designed for family entertainment. These games look like they put in the “gameplay” and then put the models and texture overtop to superficially resemble a place of children’s entertainment, instead of making a place kids would play in and then finding out where the gameplay naturally fit into the environment

Imagine you play as the founder of a mascot factory. Something went horribly wrong and your soul was trapped in the body of one of your creations. Your goal is now to help your descendant release you and end the haunting of your factory. The factory was shut down 20 years ago when you and five other employees disappeared under wildly mysterious circumstances. Now, 20 years later, your son/daughter has come to figure out what happened. They don't know that your soul is still trapped inside the massive animatronic designed to look like you. They know only that the factory has begun to come alive again despite the power, water, etc. being disconnected long ago. The factory features areas where the animatronics could interact with visitors. As the premier animatronic factory in the world, every restaurant, amusement park, and museum that needed animatronics bought them from your factory. Freddy Fazbear, Chuck E. Cheese, etc. They all bought their animatronics from your factory.

When making mascot horror you should do the following: - Be original/creative and not ripoff other games to make it memorable and enjoyable and not boring. - Have people playtest your game to see if it's possible for people who have no idea what to expect. - Have hints over just explaining what to do to not take away from the emersive feeling you want to create. - Make it realistic as in no stupid platforming or puzzles that would just be way over the top like jumping over lava and stuff like that. Just have things that actually suit the location. - Talking about location, make the location itself something that isn't overused. So no daycares or schools or themeparks. Obviously this is not a requirement but it'll be harder to get popular if your game isn't original enough as I said earlier. It might be possible to do an overused location in a way not many have done before though. - Plan out the story and lore before hand and know where you're going with the gane so thst it nakes sense and isn't just some fever dream. Don't over do it and start with something small but expandable so you can have some story that nakes sense without the rest but you can add on the rest later if you devide to do more chapters. It's also better to have small hints throughout instead of spilling the lore all at once. This way players will remain engaged and want to know more. - Have good gameplay. Now this should be done with all these other points in mind but you'd also want to have balance in dificulty and controls that feel natural. You want the mechanics to suit the theme while being done creatively. It would also be good if making the dificulty start easy but slowly get harder over time ao players can get used to the mechanics before they reavh the harder puzzles and challenges. - Do not use AI and instead get real people to voice act who can do a decent job at it. - Have limits. You don't want the gane being TOO dark or unsettling. You need a good balance of dark and passive. - Don't design the theme to be scary. This may sound weird at first but in order to make a good mascot horror game, you need to bear in mind thst this is a location made for CHILDREN. The theme and characters should look passive and friendly in the right lighting but only look creepy or scary in the right context. Horror games like FNAF and Poppy Playtime do this. Seeing the characters normally during the day would seem normal and family friendly but in the dark they can be terrifying on the right circumstances. Of course theres probably many other things for making a good mascot horror but these are just the things that I've noticed people taliking about looking st comments and videos of people pkaying these types of games.

No small child who likes dinosaurs would be allowed within a thousand feet of the location in Playtown. Take it from someone who works the front desk at a museum famous for its dinosaurs-- those kids would not stand for naming a generic dinosaur that has literally nothing in common with a stegosaurus Steg. Then again, maybe that's why the place closed in the first place.
