In a 1978 NFL game against the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Cardinals quarterback Jim Hart was nursing a partially separated shoulder. He wasn't even listed on the depth chart entering the game because of the injury, as no one expected him to play. However, not only did he play, but he won the game for the winless Cards after throwing the game-winning touchdown. This is the story behind the heroic touchdown.

As a Cowboys fan, I always had a lot of respect for Hart. One of my favorites Cowboys opponents, Jim could straight up ball. Hart to Gray was often a thing of beauty and a source of frustration for the Cowboys and their fans.

Jim Hart (17) was one of the best at throwing “the bomb” back then. Throwing to John Gilliam (44), Mel Gray (85), Jackie Smith (81), Dave Williams (80), and others. As a Browns fan, I hated those Cardinals, especially when we’d play them twice a year.

I was a Cardinals fan as a kid, and here's the best way I can express the greatness of Jim Hart as a QB. The Big Red usually had some pretty terrible defenses, so the Cardinals played from behind a lot, and opposing defenses knew they'd be throwing. When Mel Gray slowed down, Jackie Smith moved on, and JV Cain died, Hart had one reliable receiver to throw to really, in Pat Tilley. And that once-great offensive line was getting older and older and less and less reliable by the end of the 1970s. And yet...every game Big Red fans felt like the team had a chance, if only because of Jim Hart.

Sometimes Jim Hart ran straight backward after taking the snap... other times he ran back sideways. Dan Fouts also did this. Is this a Don Coryell thing?

Thanks again for posting a great story. I grew up in Baltimore, back when & where we never saw the Cardinals on TV, this was the late 1970s. I always knew Jim Hart was tough, and the Cardinals held their own against Philly and Dallas.

Fun Fact: I was at this game. First live football game of my life and since I'm a Cardinal fan, this was a thrill. There I was, 13 year old me with my older brothers and wearing my Cardinals winter coat, going into one of the most hostile places an opposing fan could go(I had since been to dozens of games live as my dad got season tix in the mid 80's). When Jim Otis scored the first TD, then Hart hit Stief with that long TD then Roger Wherli sealing the win with an INT in the end zone, I was on cloud 9. The Cards actually went on to have a decent 2nd half of the season going 6-2 down the stretch. But yeah it was cool seeing us beat the Eagles to break the losing streak that began the previous Thanksgiving.(Miami 55-14)

Stafford was injured on the next to last play of the game. The Browns screwed up and called a time out which allowed Stafford to come back and throw the game winning touchdown. There's a video about it.

In this game Bud Wilkinson coached against Dick Vermeil. Bud Wilkinson was hired by an NFL team from St. Louis after he'd been out of coaching for 15 years. Dick Vermeil would later be hired by an NFL team from St. Louis after being out of coaching for 15 years.

Speaking of injuries the Eagles lost FOUR RBs in this game, due to injury. They literally had no running game in the second half to lean on, which helped cost them the game. Of note, the Bengals were also 0-8 going into that week and another QB coming back from injury, Kenny Anderson, also had a big game and Bengals snapped their skid with a 28-13 win over the Oilers.

@If 6 Was9Bills beat marino four times in the playoffs in '90s. And marino's last game, a 62-7 playoff loss to jags. Seahawks pulled off that upset of phins in playoffs too. Marino was cocky as #k. Left the sb in that #k u jacket like he was ordained to see the s b every year. He never went back to a sb. And marino wasn't overrated. He just tried to do it all every season and was let down by having no run game or a great d in miami. Kinda like elway trying to do it all year after year before shanahan got there and got a running game with davis and a decent d.

Going 6-2 the 2nd half did hurt. Of course the Giants ended up drafting Phil Simms the next year while the Cards got OJ Anderson who ended up winning a Super Bowl with the Giants.

Jim Hart was not happy when St. Louis drafted Steve Pisarkowicz with their first round pick in 1977. Cardinals wasted their first round pick the next year on Arkansas kicker Steve Little.

Oh, to put the Cards horrible start into context, after the collapse of 1977 which included a loss to the lowly Bucs, Bidwill cleaned house. He fired Coryell, Terry Metcalf ran to Canada, and Conrad Dobler was traded. That's 3 major offensive cogs to lose.
