In a 1978 NFL game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, the Packers out-gained the Eagles 385-148 in total yardage, and averaged 4.8 yards per carry on the ground compared to 1.7 yards per carry for Philly. Despite all of this, and despite Green Bay practically living in Philadelphia territory for the entire game, the Eagles still won, despite almost every box score statistic working against them. This is the story of what might be the most surprising win from a box score standpoint in the history of the Philadelphia Eagles

This video replay jogged my memory. The 80 yd. Lofton touchdown was called back because the right tackle for G. B., (Greg Koch) got called for holding. He said he hadn't blocked any differently on that play than on others. From the replay it looks like it could have gone either way. It's weird remembering something you haven't thought of in 43 years ! ( Especially w/ all the alcohol ) 😕

Couple things about the 1978 packers: 1. Were probably the best all-around team under Starr from 1975-83. 2. David Whitehurst played so well fans wanted Lynn Dickey traded and Whitehurst named the starter. 3. Terdell Middleton ran for 1,116 yards and was named to a pro bowl (packers didn't have another 1000 yard rusher until Edgar Bennett ran for 1,067 yards in 1995). From 1968 to 1991 the packers had only 5 winning seasons: 1969, 1972, 1978, 1982, 1989 Since 1992 to 2020 they have had only 4 losing seasons: 2005, 2008, 2017, 2018

Looking at their stats, I don't know what happened to them. They were 7-2 going into this game and their offense was pretty decent. Starting with this game they couldn't score to save their lives. Actually, their scoring woes started 2 weeks before this. Starting week 8, here's their offensive output: 7, 9, 3, 14, 3, 10, 17, 0, 14. They went 2-6-1 in this stretch.

Oh, another "how did they lose this game" moment has to be the 2006 Monday Night Meltdown by the Cardinals against the Bears. The Cards outgained the Bears by 100 yards, held their offense to 3 points, and won the turnover battle 6-2 but still lost the game. You can do this game on 2 different fronts of either a meltdown or a dumbest decision game as Dennis Green coached not to lose and put the ball in his pocket the entire 2nd half. He kept on slamming Edgerrin James up the middle. James had 36 carries for 55 yards that game. But the Bears scored off of 2 fumbles and a Devon Hester punt return to win by a point.

Sciarra QB’d UCLA and Vermeil to a Rose Bowl upset over Ohio State in 1976, a game which directly led to Vermeil being hired a month later to coach the Iggles. He originally backed up Mark Harmon as QB in a wishbone system at UCLA, so for Vermeil he was a proven commodity in these situations.

My team once beat the Jets in '09 despite just 10 first downs, being outgained 378-104 and getting just one takeaway, without the Jets missing any FGs. That was the famous Ted Ginn game where he had two 100-plus yard kick return scores and even then it took a scoop and score by Jason Taylor (the all-time leader in that category) to win. And then the next season they beat the Jets despite only 6 first downs and being more than doubled in total yards.

The 2000 Ravens were interesting with some of their stat lines. Week 17 versus the Jets they got out yarded 524-142 yet due to turnovers from their defense and 2 punt return TDs by Jermaine Lewis, the Ravens won 34-20. The divisional round Tennessee out yards them almost 300 yards and the Ravens also won that game by 14. Weird to say the least that nowadays you see statlines like that then it's usually a blowout loss.

Couple of observations here. #1, you mentioned the Eagles losing to the Cardinals the previous week. That was the first NFL game I ever saw live and it was the first win by the Cardinals since week 10 of the 1977 season, ironically over the Eagles. #2, Sciarra is an Italian name and in Italian, when you have Sci it makes a SH sound so his name is pronounced Shyra although I've heard it pronounced Shee-arra. It's the same if his name had an 'sce' it's pronounced the same way like in the name Buscemi like the actor. Even he gets it wrong pronouncing it "Busemi". I know this because I have the same last name but I digress. 3rd, you said that the Eagles might be able to afford to lose maybe 1 game down the stretch and still make the playoffs. Well, they lost 2 down the stretch and only made the playoffs by beating the Giants in week 16(incidentally, this was the first season the NFL played 16 games).

If You had to pick a Philadelphia Eagle surprising win, you should have done the 1994 Eagles blow of over the San Francisco 49ers. I'll never understand how the Eagles having a bad year with a bad coach in Rich Kotite managed to blowout the powerhouse and 94 Super bowl champions 49ers by the score of 40 to 8. Not only did they beat them but it was a manhandled humiliation of the 49ers during their heyday.
@gluserty
@gluserty Ай бұрын
Eagles played well through the first 9 games of the season (7-2), and the 49ers were struggling to find cohesion with their patchwork offensive line through their first 5 games (3-2; the line began coming together in the next game vs. the Lions after being down 14-0. So, the 1994 49ers had a stretch when they were outscored 54-8😮).Still, the 49ers getting beat AT home by that score remains a surprise, even with the conditions I mentioned.

You forgot a very unlikely win. The Bears win over the Cardinals in 2006. The Bears were outgained 286-168 and had 6 turnovers. The unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about another Eagles win in 1966 that doesn’t make sense when you look at the underlying stats.

Another crazy moment in terms of stats happened when in 1976, the eagles produced a pro bowl qb who had more interceptions than tds.

In 2015 somehow the Packers won Both games vs the Lions in spite of holding the lead exactly 0:00 seconds of the game. The second Win was won off the famous 61 yard moon shot hail mary from Aaron Rodgers to TE Richard Rodgers.

No, 2015 the Lions won at Lambeau and snapped their 24-year Wisconsin losing streak (92, 93, and 94 regular season games were in Milwaukee) in a bad day for kicking--Prater missed two XPs and Crosby missed the game winner

Isn't that the same game where Megatron broke the plane of the endzone then someone knocked the ball out of his hands and the officials ruled it incomplete?

9:18 If #44 Doug Kotar does anything else besides just kinda sorta lightly brush Edwards while casually strolling by him, the Miracle At The Meadowlands never happens.

I heard that Larry Csonka basically told Joe Pisarcik in the huddle, “Don’t you dare give me the ball.”

Cost the packers the playoffs. My brother was being born during this game and my dad was mother fucking the game in the hospital as a packer fan 😆

A game where literally you win by the littlest strand of hair, most likely the Packers collapsed because they ended up getting exposed here, I don't know.

The Packers were comically bad in the 70s and most of the 80s.
