I know for me I'm making a board game for the last 2 years and I have one out of 5 game modes that are stabilizing with balance work and now I'm making my own cards and having people do graphic art for them

Thank you for not seeing mechanics vs theme as the two opposite sides of a coin most web authors do. That both presentation (art) and mechanics (state and movement) both equally contribute to creating a theme. For me an example mechanic that is at its heart a theme best is an auction mechanic. I enjoyed this article for its ideas and perspective on area control though.

You raise a great point, bidding can certainly be very thematic. Thanks so much for your comment and kind words ☺

Have watched a few of your videos now and I must say they are very informative but also very engaging. I used to play Risk when I was young but in recent times I've discovered Euro games and realise now how much Risk relied on Luck of the dice rolls. I would also add into your comment about it not playing well at 2 players that even at 3 players its a little 'mean'. I always remember one game where it was virtually impossible for me to win as both other players spent the rest of the game 'ganging up' on me. I've not really tried any more modern Area-Control games except for Tyrants of the Underdark and Rising Sun. The first one I love because its not just pure area control and there is also a deck-building mechanic and if one person is doing amazing on the area control aspect for VP, they are likely not doing so well in other parts of the game. Rising Sun I wasn't too keen on though as this felt more Risk-like and perhaps I'm not too good at reading people so couldn't quite grasp the hidden-action selection of the game. Anyway, that's just my two-cents on this mechanic :) Keep up the good work on these videos!

Thanks so much! If you’re looking for area control with a euro- feel, I can’t recommend El Grande enough! And if you’re looking for something a little more cut throat but still strategic, I’d highly recommend Inis! Thanks again for your kind words, it’s very much appreciated ☺️

Great idea, we were just thinking about our next mechanism-based video! We've actually been playing a lot of Blood on the Clocktower recently and that's FULL of innovations! Thanks for your idea 🙌

Would Settlers of Catan count as an area control game?

It's not classified as an Area Control game on Board Game Geek. I'd say the emphasis is on trading and resource management for this one. Thanks for your comment!

Probably the most important games not mentioned nor shown on screen: Blood Rage, Kemet (!!!), Cosmic(!), Dune(!). I would especially love a part showing how more modern games (Kemet would be perfect here) deal with typical "problems" with area control (mainlky "issues with Risk") ;) Love how much Inis exposure this video does, but sad none of the amazing features it has are mentioned therein (mainly how it combines the alleged "two types" of area control)

Which edition of Diplomacy is this? Custom 3d printed pieces?
@cogitodesign

I believe it's the 50th-anniversary edition of Diplomacy which comes with cardboard counters for its armies and navies. But the owners of this particular copy wanted to paint minis to improve it. Good right! 🙌

I super disagree with the whole "area control and area majority" point. El Grande is literally the same kind of thing as Inis etc.
