To parents everywhere listening to this song.. Take it to heart. Make time for your children. Nothing and I mean NOTHING is more important than your children, especially when they are minors. I do not care how busy you are, how tired you are, make time for your children. They grow up so fast and they really need their parents when they are young. You can not buy back yesterday no matter how much money you have. Make the time. Find the time.

I remember one morning long ago, when my dad asked me to take a ride with him to the store. I didn't want to go, since I was busy watching my Saturday morning cartoons. He said to me "You know, some day I won't be around to take you places anymore." He died that night. I was 11. While not exactly the same thing, this song does remind me of a hard lesson I learned that night; to always let the people you love KNOW that you love them, because you just never know, and the people you love should never be left wondering....

I'm writing this with teary eyes. I remember as a child hearing this song for the first time and having a strong response to it, to the point of tears. It came on the radio as I was sitting as a passenger while my mother drove, to where I don't remember now, but after the song was over she looked at me and noticed I was crying and asked me if I was okay I simply said I'll be fine. You see, I grew up without a father and this song reminded me of what I had missed and what I would never have and that being a Father's love and guidance

I was with my parents on the way to a Harry Chapin concert. We were actually looking for a parking spot when we heard on the radio that he had died in that car crash on the way to the show. My parents were devastated. I was too young to fully understand the impact, until I was much older. This is still one of my dad's favorite songs (as sad as it is). I think it really motivated him to be present in my life.

I began to cry as Harry Chapin's son spoke. I got to see Harry Chapin in concert, way back in the 1970's, in Central Park. I was in the front row, and it was unforgettable. Harry was warm and loving with his audience. I was devastated when I heard he died, way too young. You must react to "Taxi," really. Harry was a story teller, and Taxi was his most famous song. He even did a sequel to Taxi! It is a classic. Thank you for reacting to thos beautiful man. ✌️🎶💙

He was one of the greatest singer/songwriters ever! His [Harry Chapin] songs reflected so much of everyday life that we all can relate to them in one way or another. This classic song "Cats in the Cradle" [1974] was one of the biggest songs that year. Ever since it has captured the minds of everyone who has ever heard it. And they have become better parents for it. That's a great legacy to leave behind. Awesome! Please react to his song "A Better Place to Be" 1978. It is a tearjerker...

When my father died, I didn't shed a tear, didn't go to his funeral, and hadn't seen him in 5 years. His choices always were about himself and his interests. Which was completely fine. He chose how to live his life. When my son, now 30, was born, I made my decisions based around him. I was going to present at everything and be involved in his life. I knew that I could die at any moment and wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. I thank my dad everytime I hear this song because I vowed never to be like him for my son.

This is a "real parent's song". The time, effort, and focus it takes to ensure that your child has food in the belly, clothes on the back, roof over the head, and a safe place to sleep can really take you away from a lot of the 'little things' that are so damn precious in life. And yet, when your child grows up, has a family of their own? They have to go through the same time, effort and focus to take care of their children. But they still remain "your child" and all you want to do is have those "little moments" together to cherish together. This is why the "little things" can have a life-long impact. I am 50yrs old, almost 51. And one of my fondest childhood memories is my dad volunteering every summer to be my baseball team's "scorekeeper" every weekend. At the time, I just thought my dad was doing something to be around me, but more for the team than for me personally. When I was in my 20's my dad showed me EVERY SINGLE GAME and how he had tracked my EVERY SINGLE TIME AT BAT. It wasn't until then that I knew my dad had done it so that he would be there to focus his full attention on ME every time I was at bat, or had a ball hit to me. He kept score of every play, of every game, of every team I played for between 8 and 12 every summer. And I knew when he showed it to me and talked about it, he could still recall every game thanks to those scorecards. Win or lose, he could remember EVERY play that I was involved in. Every out, every score for the team, and the team's overall record at the end of the season. It was one of the few times as a "grown man" that I cried in front of my own father because of how much it had meant to him to be there for me, and I hadn't noticed it at the time. And it was what had made me so damn pushy to be involved in my own little boy's time playing football by volunteering to be the assistant coach for his pee-wee games.

Another great singer songwriter & storyteller. I had his "Greatest Stories Live" double album. "Cat's In The Cradle" is his most famous piece. "Taxi" was another big hit for Harry Chapin. Ten years later he followed it up with "Sequel" showing what happened to the 2 people in the story. He had so many great songs such as "W·O·L·D", "Mr. Tanner", "Mail Order Annie", "They Call Her Easy", "I Wanna Learn A Love Song", "30,000 Pounds Of Bananas", "Shooting Star", "Halfway To Heaven", "Six String Orchestra", "Dreams Go By", "Remember When The Music", "Story Of A Life". Harry is one of my all time favorites. I saw him in concert about a dozen times. His live versions of songs give you an idea of his relationship with his audience. The entire show was Harry and his band, no warm up act. Just about 3 hours of Harry singing with a short intermission near the middle. Every show ended with the song “Circle”. After performing for 3 hours Harry would go out to the main concourse to autograph any concert book or t-shirt for as long as it took. The ladies would also get a kiss. Proceeds from the sale of merchandise would go to his foundation “World Hunger Year”. Harry Chapin was a fantastic storyteller, humanitarian, and philanthropist. Another talented singer gone too soon.

I've always loved this song. It's almost a cautionary tale. Be careful what you model to your kids and what you teach them. They're watching. And they need you. Be there for them and teach them that they're important. ❤️ The crash he died in was somewhat ironic since he was involved in an accident with an 18 wheeler - see if you can find Thirty Thousand Pounds Of Bananas - the live album version (1975). Great song, darkly amusing, and eerily prescient given how he died.

I was a a 5 year old boy when this song came out. My dad told me then it made him think of me. He’s been gone for 20 years now and I have two grown sons of my own. I tried to make the moments with them mean something, but never enough. If you men have sons, hug them tight.

So glad you discovered Harry, the greatest live entertainer I've ever seen. The man had the ability to make you feel like he was singing to you in your living room, even if you were sitting rows back in an arena. Take a look into his life: he donated 1/2 of his concert proceeds to fight world hunger and served on Pres. Carter's commission to fight hunger. That was his cause - he always said there were so many problems for which we don't have an answer, but that's one where we do. We can feed the world. A great entertainer, great storyteller (check out "All of Life's a Circle" and "I Wanna Learn a Love Song"), and great human being.

That song changed a lot of parenting styles opening the eyes of new parents. Kids mimic their parents because it’s what they are programmed to do and how they develop is entirely based on those early years even when they can’t remember them.

@Shawn And Mel Check this out... THIS is what you need to know about our great Harry Chapin! He was born in Greenwich Village in NYC, lived for a time in Brooklyn BUT most of his life he lived out here on Long Island WITH US. By WITH US... I need to explain to you, he was never one to put on airs about himself. He truly was one of the most down to earth people who doesn't want to meet. After he passed our local open air amphitheater I'm doing some renovations and was renamed the Harry Chapin amphitheater in his honor. He ALSO has other places on Long Island that were named after him. BUT my park in our town was one of the first...it was also so close to Nassau Coliseum. That was where he used to play his concerts for decades. When others came to play in Madison Square Garden and other venues on Long Island... Coliseum was always on that list after they played the Garden. THAT'S all the circuit runs before they go over to Jersey to the Meadowlands. THEN they might even hit 1 or 2 more in Jersey BUT USUALLY it's 2 or 3 dates at the Meadowlands because most bands they can fill that venue every year without scattering themselves all around the state. THEN THEY GO TO UPSTATE NY PLAY AT "THE EGG" IN ALBANY. It's literally a like stones throw away from all capital in NYS and it's pretty much shaped like an egg and the acoustics are amazing for any band to play in. Then I'll pick a couple of the towns the bigger venues. A LOT OF UPSTATE NY IS COLLEGE TOWNS & KNOW NOT THAT FAR APART FROM EACH OTHER. WE'RE NOT like other states that may have 5 or 6 state colleges~I CAN NAME 6 off my head right now. Four of them are within three counties of each other upstate which is like a couple hundred miles apart if that. We have 110 MI here on Long Island when it comes to HOW LONG our Island actually is. JUST down here, WE have two state colleges HERE! Lol! NOW... there's a reason for the story, Jersey has like 18 state colleges we have 75 here in NYS ok? Sometimes these bands swing back into a second show at the Meadowlands as they go through Connecticut on a loop going south. If you ever look at your bands they usually going out of York and then they go south and they go back up and then they fly out of you up and go to Europe. Why because most times you only have to change out of New York ONCE to get over here. Also you can fly from New York to CANADA after secondary return to Meadowlands show in even like less than 3 HOURS tops ok? Hell I can probably make that drive in like freaking 10/12 HRS TOPS or so. THAT'S IF I stop twice to pee and once to get more coffee in me ok? I usually didn't buy food on the road when I used to drive. It's better AND cheaper when you make your own sandwiches. Plus you never know if their condiments like the mayonnaise is bad and it can make you feel sketchy. Then you've nowhere to go to the bathroom OR yuke. So now here's what he'd do~he left the bands do that circuit and swing back to New York and he never let anybody know who is doing HIS FREE CONCERTS~UNTIL like 2 or 3 days before. They always held at a place called Bald Hill which is for veterans out on the Eastern the Long Island. My older buddy I used to hang out with called Dead Bob, who was the Vietnam vet was the one who told me about the concert when Three Dog Night played! I totally flipped out because I found out about 2 weeks beforehand I was able to tell my friend to get that weekend off from her job! NOW ALL UOU GAVE TO DO TO BRING ACTUALLY AS AN ADMISSION PRICE IF YOU EVEN WANT TO CALL IT THAT? WOULD YOU REALLY WHAT REALLY IS SUGGESTED THAT YOU BRING IN AS "YOUR TICKET"... IS LIKE A BOX OF FOOD THAT'S NOT PERISHABLE OR SOME CANS OF NON-PERISHABLE STUFF FOR HIS CHARITY SO YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF PEOPLE WITH FAMILIES WHO IN NEED ON LONG ISLAND. THIS IS WHY WE SAY HE LIVED WITH US AND HE WAS ONE OF US. Harry Chapin truly had a huge heart, people in NYC loved him, and the people in Long Island loved him once you moved out here and became part of walking with me. It wasn't just everybody around the world would love this music he was a genuinely sweet giving kind person. It was the FIRST food banks that was ever set up on Long Island to help the poor. He saw the need of struggling families and he was like NO this can't be going on with these kids going hungry. I got to find a way to help people. So he reached out to all the artists that he knew and let them play their concerts to make their money. When they were done doing a run, one OR depending on scheduling...a few of them secretly had already committed themselves to do his concerts without saying a word to anybody. That way they'll be able to make money on ticket sales and still be able to give a free concert to people who really genuinely wanted to go but truly couldn't afford to buy a ticket. THAT'S WHY he kept the identity of who was playing secret. He didn't want people just saying oh I'm not going to buy it because I know he's going to be the headliner in another couple weeks when the concert hits at Bald Hill. Most of the people who are in that crowd were people like myself who are hard-working people or people who are out of work the time and just didn't have the $22 right then with the 27 bucks or maybe the 50 bucks or the $150 to get in the somewhat little to kind of crappy ALMOST front seats which is pretty much what their cost was back then. So it wasn't just to give back in the way of food for Long Island it was a gift back in the way of free music to people who really pretty much about 75% or 85% of that audience truly couldn't afford to have a ticket to a show in order to actually take a day off and be able to enjoy themselves. I can't tell you how happy that concert made me because it's a child Joy to the World WAS one of the first songs I learned how to say! This Island AND NYC to this day I'm still mourning of Harry Chapin. He wasn't just a great musician, he was a trailblazer people who were poor and in need. He brought music Love kindness and generosity of spirit to this world here. He brought it to many generations but we were going to so much unrest. During my generation they were countries that didn't exist yet. Like Germany it was still two countries. Like Russia didn't exist, it was still the United Socialist Soviet Republic. Czechoslovakia was still in existence before I became the Czech Republic. The country of Georgia had not annexed from the USSR. One of the best days of my life was watching on MTV as the wall fell down between East and West Germany! He give us a lot of Hope and smiles through a lot of turbulent times. As a former singer I appreciate what he gave out into the world. #NYGenXBIKERLady www.licares.org/#:~:text=Long%20Island%20Cares%20is%20Long,hungry%20and%20food%20insecure%20populations.
