Looking at MK cultures, we can clearly see that they don't care about the preservation of species, there is no ecological culture In MK. Aside from Kotal hating the tarkatans for joining Mileena, I think this line implies that Kotal wasn't as brutal overall when he met Jade as he was in MKX, and he became so after the civil war started. On a side note, I think Kotal Kahn is such a cool character (his gameplay and personality in kombat) and was disappointed that they didn't do him way more justice in the stories of MKX and 11. I wish to see him redeemed in MK12.

There is no good guy in MK. Do you think "real good guys" can do these terrible things (fatalities, mocking the opponent when they know the opponent may die etc) and still be able to sleep, keep living, to have a family, to have children etc? Only psycopaths/sociopaths can do It, specially because their Earth has a culture like ours. Outworld (and other realms) has a different culture (for example, they don't have human rights culture), characters from that realm (and other realms) has more "excuse" for not being considered psychopaths/sociopaths, they have never lived in a culture like ours...maybe they can change and they wouldn't be like that if they were born on Earth. MK has never "sold" empathy, understanding, pacifism, emotional inteligence.. MK "sells" big ego, lack of empathy, blood, gore.

It had no build up, it came out of nowhere, it negitvly impacts both characters, it was suposed to be Jade ahving her own story where she wasn't just an accecorry to kitanna but ended up with her being a trophy to Kotal instead... Jade and Kotal is a flawed relationship at best, cause lets be honest here, it just needs some rewrites to fix it, such as Jade having met Kotal during her training early on under Shao, so she knows him. Jade sees Kotal's more brutal approach to leadership when she's brought into the timeline and eventually breaks through to him after he gets injured by Geras, eventually saving him from Baraka who tries to kill him. They could've had a more fleshed out relationship, but the way it is now is flawed, yet not actually all that toxic when you think about it, at least compared to every other relationship.

Kotal is from anoter culture where violence is a means to an end. he's supposed to represent the Aztec tribe (one of the most deadly and violent tribes ever) so he is expected to be violent or aggresive in certain ways. Jade in the story mode showed him how he became more angrier and unjust in all those years being a prisoner in shang tsung's pits and by all the people who betrayed him. (we could make a list about it) granted he attacked her as he would with any warrior who opposes him, and later after sha Kahn broke his back (an analogy of kotahl's pride) he tells Jade he understunds her perspective, he will not pursue the Tarkata anymore, and he made the most noble thing a tyrant in his position could do, he gave the power to someone who he considered could make justice. i think Kotal is ok if you consider the fact he's from the MK universe.

A lot of the instability in his rule was because he was stuck in a shitty situation with Mileena and Goro and he had to deal with all of that, while kitana was able to come in at better time with most of the instability wiped away and the only major problem in outworld politics being Shao Kahn but everybody at the point pretty much turned against Shao Kahn.

@Xbox One in the original timeline Kitana quite handily dealt with both Goro and Mileena. And she did it more effectively too. She was the one who brought peace between the Shokan and Centaurs, gaining Goro as a major Allie in the process. She put Mileena away in prison(probably should have just killed her, but still lol). It took great forces to try and break down what she built. It took her death and eventual capture to have Mileena freed so she can pose as Kitana and it took Goro’s near death and rescue for him to switch sides out of debt. In the new timeline, Kotal gets bodied back to back by Jade and then by Shao Kahn. Kitana meanwhile is, much like the old timeline, bringing in forces to unite. Something Kotal just can’t and never have done. Who brings the Shokan around even after what Kotal did? Kitana. Who brings the Tarkatans around even after Kotal just tried to wipe them all out….again? Kitana. Kotal doesn’t stand a chance if Kitana isn’t gathering allies. Also these factions are also there to help in the final battle of the game’s climax. Anyways, while it is a bit of a contrivance for Kitana to defeat Kahn by herself and an even bigger one for her not to kill him, it takes a way larger contrivance, some retcons, and more time travel shenanigans to undo her work this time around lol. So where exactly was this easy path?

They shouldn’t have had the romance at all, it does nothing to add to the plot. Or, if they were gonna go the route of making them a couple, make them exes where Jade left Kotal because of his violent ways, don’t have her fall in love with him again. I play Fire Emblem, and in Fire Emblem Fates there are two characters who had a pre-existing relationship with each other: Saizo and Kagero. Their whole relationship didn’t work out because Saizo is brash and aggressive while Kagero is more level-headed and practical. In their A-Support, they acknowledge that despite their relationship not working out, they could still work together as a team to protect their lord. They can do this especially because this weird twist into turning Kotal into an ally, when he was nothing but a massive dick in MKX, creates such a jarring story shift.

Okay…. so…. Here me out here… 1. We don’t know the context to Jade and Kotal’s relationship. I think the main way that people are able to make the argument that it is a bit odd is because it was brought up out of nowhere, so we have to accept an established relationship without experiencing why it exists. 2. I feel like the genocide argument is a little harsh considering a few factors. We know that Outworld is a harsher place to grow up and that the laws and social norms there are very different to that of Earthrealm. In-fighting in Outworld is common and that would be exacerbated by the loss of the total tyrant that was Shao Kahn, given that while Kotal is harsh he is also less harsh thus less feared of the two Kahns. Because of the chaotic nature of Outworld Kotal must be somewhat ruthless given that many in Outworld do not respond to normal governing as we know it and do not respect him for being merciful (seen as weak) 3. We also need to remember another KEY part of this: at this point in the timeline, Jade is dead. The only reason she is back at all is because of Kronika, hence we need to consider the side effects of this. For starters, we can assume that if there was such a strong relationship between the two, perhaps the death of Jade around the same time that Kotal is forced to take up the mantle of Kahn hardens him; makes him cold. Jade might have been the one who balanced him out, gave him a reason to be hopeful and merciful. By MK11, Kotal has lived without Jade for a very long time. Heck, Jade died because she aligned herself with a group that weren’t ruthless enough and let themselves be killed by Sindel. On the flipside, the Jade we see in MK11 hasn’t experienced any of that. She is empathetic to the losses Kotal has endured, but she still sees the man that she fell in love with; albeit damaged and acting out from his experiences. She sees someone who is misguided but can be redeemed. I’m not necessarily saying that Kotal is a saint and that we should all just give him a pass for what he has done. But contextualising him using the details we know about Jade’s early demise and Outworld’s cruel philosophies, as well as recognising the fact that we never got to see Jade and Kotal as they came to love one another, I actually don’t think they are bad for one another. My hope would be that if we ever do get a prequel game (or another reboot) that the origins of these two will be explored a little bit more so that we can then make more informed judgments. Your second point ignores that Jade is 10000+ years old, Jade is much, much older, battle hardened & has lived under & served Shao Kahn far longer than Kotal ever did. Jade herself should be total opposite of the hopeful, good natured 20-something. If Kotal has become hardened & cold in such a short period of time by comparison, imagine Jade and Kitana, they should be remorseless, unfeeling, cold, extremely jaded and cynical. However you’ve made the assumption that because Jade went through some shit like Kotal has that they both would acted and reacted in the same way; realistically, different people react differently to similar stimuli based on their life experience, how they were brought up, the way they are viewed in their society, etc. Similarly, the idea that Jade has experienced more conflict because she is older doesn’t necessarily mean that she is meant to be numb to conflict, battle hardened, etc. Again, maybe in her extra years she has become reflective, wise to the devastation of rash actions like that of Shao Kahn. Obviously there isn’t a concrete answer of what Jade believes, but I think the best indicator of it all is her relationship to Kitana. Jade genuinely cares about her, they have a strong bond that has lasted for awhile and that likely comforted Jade through a lot of the traumatic shit she would’ve been through - a type of comforting that I highly doubt Kotal received. We also know that the sole canonical romantic partner Jade had (Kotal) did NOT die during her lifetime, meaning that although she has suffered great loss, it’s a different kind of loss to that which Kotal experienced and thus may have had a different effect. I feel like a more important argument though would be that loss would affect them differently based on what we know about the characters. Jade is an assassin which means she is controlled and would need to be able to regulate herself to remain calm and focussed. Kotal is more of a warrior/leader and to be effective at that you need to be emotionally charged enough that you can convince your army to put their lives on the line for your cause. Ultimately, it’s these reasons that tend to make me think Jade is probably more level headed and emotionally stable such that she balances Kotal out a little

To her credit, Jade did convince Kotal to change his ways. That was kind of Kotal's character arc, he was on his way to becoming the next Shao Kahn and was given a second chance to turn a new leaf. When even your SO is saying you are in the wrong, its time to take a step back and look at everything objectively. I mean even Jade had to turn a new leaf, she wasn't always on the side of good, so she probably figured she could save him, and she kind of did. Standing up to a loved one is hard.

Jade and King Lao would make sense to me just because they share a fate as revenants and being in someone else's shadow all of the time. Seems more like a big thing emotionally than dating the dude who also worked for the same boss as you did. Always felt like Liu and Kitana were doomed fate where they want to be together but fate never allows it either by Liu becoming a zombie or ascending to godhood. Also felt kind of like Jade and Kotal were matched more as an ethnic-pairing thing since Kitana was made much more asian appearing in the game where her romance with Liu is very prominent in the lore. Not saying it's racist but "dark skin wears green" is the most Kotal and Jade seem to have in common besides "Shao Kahn was a meanie boss".

It feels weird to me that Jade gets her own chapter when people like Shao Kahn, Kung Lao and Sub-Zero have to share theirs. And she spends hers going on a mission that ends in failure and making her man look pathetic for being beaten by her and needing to be rescued from being executed twice. She should’ve shared hers with Kitana, maybe see that sister-like bond they’re supposed to have. Because as it goes, you don’t really get a good sense of their friendship in this story mode. At least I didn’t. Plus it kinda sucks that Jade’s the kind of person that when they get a boyfriend, they love to talk about it like everyone else cares. Sonya was never that mushy about Johnny and Jacqui barely mentions that guy she’s engaged to.

I feel like the Jade/Kotal story is basically all of the problems with time travel relationship stories. Kotal could easily have been a totally different person when they had a relationship, but decades later trying to fit into Shao Khan’s shoes he has been at best hardened and at worst jumped right off the deep end. Jade understanding the evil of Kotal’s actions breaks a lot of the defenses for Kotal (including those of his actions in the previous game). The argument often used to defend how outworlders behave compared to earthrealmers is that their world is so brutal, they’re fundamentally going to handle things in a more brutal way, hence lines like in MKX where Erron says “Remember where you are.” The “it’s their culture” argument based on the idea that they’re so brutalized by Shao Kahn, they accept the horrors of things like this as normal Indeed, theft during wartime has received some pretty harsh punishments in our world, including food theft. Thing is, Outworlders are brutal yes, but we see they have their on concepts of how war should be conducted and how order should be maintained. To hear out the “it’s their culture argument” Outworld is realm filled with different peoples from conquered worlds, and it has had two genocidal, brutal dictators (Onaga and Shao Kahn) who have literally used the threat of genocide to keep people in line or as a part of how they wage war (see an undead army that grounds your population to death through attrition or sucking out the souls of everyone in a realm). They’ve played species favoratism too. The mistakes or successes of one member of one of outworld’s species can effect all of them. This would shape outworlder’s perspectives, right? This is going to lead to some species-based tribalism on the existential level. We’ve seen outworlder rulers use genocide as a punishment many times: Shao Kahn: Probably too many to mention off screen, but we do get it mentioned that he burned the Kytinn hives as well, putting D’Vorah’s people on the brink. Reiko/Mileena in the non-cannon comic series killed of the Osh-Tekk because of Kotal. Various Outworld characters commit genocide in their endings when they gain power. This could lead someone to believe that outworlders won’t have the earthrrealmer’s notions of a Just War or that there is a moral way to conduct war. Every culture in Outworld in some way relates back to the brutal might makes right manner that Shao Kahn ruled. If this is so, then outworlders wouldn’t see the horrors of genocide as fundamentally immoral. It’s just horrific punishment or the result of being on the losing side. The thing is, they do recognize things like genocide as immoral, Jade included. This argument of being culturally desensitized to genocide goes right out the window because of Jade’s reaction. This is the Jade of MK9 present in MK11 when the past characters come back. She’s only just betrayed the Emperor for her friend, so she is still deeply immersed in outworld’s ways and even she finds Kotal’s actions repugnant, meaning that either she is out of character or Outworlder’s really do understand genocide to be a special kind of evil. That you can’t blame a species for the actions of a few. Others, including Kitana and even Baraka, also recognize this (kinda hypocritical considering Baraka’s endings in some cases, but okay). The fact that these weren’t even the same Tarkatans is just icing on the sickening racist cake, pretty much burying any sympathy for Kotal. A guy who had to make dark decisions in a time of war? That’ sone thing. Racist who kills everybody? Dude, no sympathy here. And she gets over it? Excuse me? Jade is an assassin, yes, and virtually everyone in outworld accepts violence as a part of life in some way, but Outworldesr have clear notions of how warfare and society should be conducted. Li Mei mentions Mileena’s methods of warfare one she get’s Shinnok’s amulet are not honorable, “not Kombat”. The Shokan are genuinely disturbed by what they consider earthrealmers lack of honor. The Tarkatan’s consider betrayal distasteful in the extreme, to the point of loyalty beyond death, even to oppressors. All of these actions indicate there is a generally accepted notion of morality that affects political and social discourse. Even the peoples of outworld recognize a form of ethics in warfare. This means she knows his genocides are evil and she still hooks up with him right away afterwards because he claims “you saved me from myself”. Uh, no. As you point out, genocide is not just a “whoopsie” sort of thing, even in Mortal Kombat, where characters are forgiven for some pretty nasty stuff really fast. Now if outworlders (by this I also include Edenians and others who have been part of outworld for thousands of years) were really so desensitized to genocide, why would she react so horribly?

I think it was almost cute how they keep calling each other "husband and wife" and love Mileena in their own twisted way. my problem with the whole kotal/jade relationship is that kotal used to be the morally better choice for the leader of outworld, but for this game they specifically made him more evil because they wanted to push the feminist agenda, so they made him make stupid decisions so that they could create conflict between him and jade so she could beat him down. the first time Kotal was responsible for genocide it wasn't his fault, and he felt so awful about it he left earth entirely. And Kotal went on with a goal of not invading earth, but going full nobunaga and forcibly taking control of all of outworld so that he could "oppress" all of the races equally and bring them together as a single people in the long run. In short, Kotal Kahn wanted to make outworld great again instead of invading somewhere else and just making the problem bigger, and in this game they directly go against that by trying to make him genocide the tarkatans for literally no other reason than they wanted him to get beaten by jade. while they also made kitana be the one to take out shao kahn. and yes. kotal kahn should just be green... they just made it paint for racial inclusion.

Kotal was an awful person in MKX as well. It’s not just MK11. He’s a terrible character through and through

OK. I'm not trying to be devil's advocate but the way I see this is: 1. Yes it feels like retcon and for me it's the most negative thing I can find. 2. There are some hints that makes me leed to thinking that Kotal was nicer guy in past and became like this over time. 3. About the genocide thing (I only played the games and didn't reed the comic books.) we Are talking about TARKATANS FFS, who were all in previous games portrayed as always chaotic evil (I know only the Netherrealm continuity.) and got the adaptional heroism treatment by showing them in details that players and probably Kotal too didn't know + there are things like past experience, so there can be some level of understanding his thoughts. 4. Yes Kung Lao sounds like better partner to Jade with downsides of it beeing cliché and bouth beeing sidekicks.

Kotal was kinda cool in mkx, especially when he was first revealed but ever since he lost to kung Jin he’s been so lame. They could just make him full blown evil but then he’ll just be a beta shao Kahn

I get why you say Kotal is bad for Jade (genocide, racism, tyranny, all valid points), but I want to add that Jade is bad for Kotal, too. When you date a warlord, you can't resort to throwing hands every time you disagree with whom he wants to kill, that's very disfuntional. From Kotal's point of view, even if he's a violent person and his girlfriend being violent towards him doesn't bother him as much as it should, she also undermines him in front of his troops and gets them both captured, damn near losing him the war. I don't see why he wouldn't break up with her, too, unless he really had a change of heart about the Tarkatans and is thankful she stopped him.

I actually really enjoyed Kotal with Jade. Honestly, I could care less about Kotal being murderous or anything like that as MK's claim to fame is built on murder and mysticism. It is what it is with that. I like the changes that took place in his character through Jade's influence. I also, love Joker and Harley. They have a horrific relationship but they've never been more interesting than when they were together. Jade is my favorite character so while I always want more storyline for her, I don't feel like anything happened to drag her down if anything she elevated Kotal. I didn't care even a little about him until MK11. His proximity to Jade actually made me take notice of his character. And for me, I got the impression that Kotal was not the tyrant he became when he and Jade first knew eachother so for her I feel like she saw the man she knew and attempted to help him return to that version of himself, which I found interesting. Both met in the service of Kahn and a relationship was born from that.
