A "poor box" can be found in many Catholic churches, even today. It's a metal box located on the back wall where people can donate money that goes to the St. Vincent DePaul society, which helps the poor. I would imagine that long ago, someone ripped this box right off the wall, took the money out of it, and threw the box in the river.

That’s beautiful. Thanks for saving this piece of history. Bravo
@carolyncollins4985Ай бұрын
Yes would love more restoration videos. That box could be a museum piece. I would have used a scraper instead of a flat head screwdriver to scrape off the pieces of rust. Great to see something restored, keep it up.

Yes Tyler please do more restoration projects. It is fascinating to reveal what’s under all the mussels and algae. The brass polished up really nice. I have found my Dremel works great on projects like this to clean and polish further after you have removed the big rusty chunks. Take care and have a great week. The chickens look fantastic and healthy.

Wow good job on the Poor Box restoration. Many Catholic Churches still continue to have poor boxes in the back wall near the entry/exit. I have seen many Churches in European countries that have them also. Next time try Rust Stain it is quicker in removing the rust. Great find I would use it as a bank with a cork plug in the back. ✌💖🕯

You should go to Harbor Freight and pick up a cheap sand blasting box. It would make getting all that rust off so much easier than scraping with a screwdriver. Cool find!

The Mount Saint Vincent archives documents the history of the Sisters of Charity in New York since the beginning of the Congregation in 1846, when the Community occupied the first Motherhouse at McGown's Pass, Manhattan. The Community moved to a new Mount Saint Vincent property in the Bronx in 1857.

I found a pocket knife that was extremely corroded and caked in rusty iron. Dropped it into a jar of muriatic acid for a few minutes, rinsed and repeated until it was near new. I've used this method a couple times since. Just don't leave anything too long and don't breath in the fumes.
@patti1101Ай бұрын
Wow the chickens got huge. Lol I saw them in the background
@marcbeebeАй бұрын
Do the 'mechanical' cleaning (scraping, wire brushing) first, then the 'chemical' cleaning; a lot of what was on there wouldn't react the the acid anyway. Look how nice that came out! Owen can use it as a coin bank!

Paint scraper or wallpaper a raper would be more helpful than a flathead screwdriver, just a helpful tip. Good job, maybe next time try to remove. Ost of rust, the put in CLR as it can only penetrate so far, then sand like you did and thena polisher. You made a big i provement on this box, what a great find.

It looks really good! Especially the plaque and the slot you put money into. Not sure how to get rid of the pitting, maybe electrolysis? Anyhow, it looks really cool and would make a nice piggy bank if you sealed up the back somehow.

Next time you need rust removed get a bottle of rust stain..it not only removes rust fast but can be used on clothes and it removes blood stains too

You should get a wire bristle brush for that !!

I have seen a poor box before. I think you could dip it in a diluted solution of water and muriatic acid and clean it up more. Neutralize the acid after the soak. You can polish up the brass with Brasso cleaner. The box I saw had the metal part painted black gloss. If you opted to do that I would use Rustoleum in a can and mix with Japanese Drier to cure it faster. Rustoleum is hard when dried and cured. Great job and find.
@TheBart49Ай бұрын
Tyler my boy, you may if hit the jackpot on this one. It could potentially be worth a lot of money. I would definitely do some searching on it. Is there a date on it anywhere?

To Cool ! Dude, a small sand blaster or one of those laser pistol. Would make it easier and faster. For as much as you do this it might not be cost effective.. just sayin. But, as busy as you are the time savings could be beneficial.

So there I was, sitting in my office, when the phone rang-a real screamer on the other end, full of excitement. Some guy pulled a box out of the drink, zebra mussels clinging to it like barnacles on a sunken treasure. This box wasn’t just any rusty relic; it had a story. A *poor box*, mind you, St. Vincent de Paul’s name all over it. Now, I’ve seen plenty of strange things pulled from rivers, but a donation box-meant for the needy-cracked open and dumped? That’s a new one. Someone, somewhere, saw this box not as a symbol of charity, but as easy pickings. Took it down, smashed it open, and left it to rust in the murky depths. That’s the kind of move a two-bit thief would make, no class, no conscience. The fella talks about cleaning it up, bringing it back to life. Sure, maybe once it was full of a few coins and some good intentions. Now, it’s just another relic of a world that forgets the down-and-out as quickly as they forget an old box at the bottom of a river. He’s talking about restoring it-scraping the rust, taking it back to its bare metal. It’s a noble idea. Maybe it’ll shine again, but that kind of shine only lasts until someone else decides they want what’s inside.
