Fun Fact about aluminum cans: They have a thin plastic coating on the inside to avoid the soda reacting with the aluminum and giving the soda a metallic taste.

Fun fact about aluminum it oxidizes in air to get a layer of aluminum oxide most of his dross is aluminum oxide which melts at a higher temperature than metallic aluminum. 660 C for aluminum 2000 C for oxide of aluminum to recover all of the aluminum he would need to heat to 2000C

Fun fact: in my state, you get 5 cents back on each can when you recycle them. It's very amusing to me that the redemption value on those 250 cans is $12.50 while the actual material price is less than eight bucks.
@Randomadventureswithpaul
@Randomadventureswithpaul 2 жыл бұрын
So where I live it's 10 cents per can return, but you pay that 10 cents at the point of purchase they call it a "bottle deposit" and you get that "deposit" back if you return the cans or bottles to the depot. I don't think it's tied to the literal weight value of the recyclable product, it's just a forced incentive to get people to stop throwing them in the trash, or melting them into bars... I bet it's probably the same in your area.

It depends on how you sell it also. Scrap value is the obvious easy choice to do but pays the least amount. The price of metal is constantly going up and down so it's hard to plan around stuff like that. Making the big bars like he is doing here you can sell them as blanks to sculptures, or different manufacturing facility's and get more then scrap for them. All depends on how creative one can be really!

If I understand this correctly that CAD stands for Canadian It does not seem profitable at all to melt them down yourself. Considering at least where I am it is .10 cents per can returned to a bottle depot which would net $25.00 CAD. But then we would not be getting these types of videos :)

10:38 Worked in a foundry once when I was 17. Boss brought out a steel “pig” and told me to pour my first bucket of aluminum into that because the owner wanted to cut down on imperfections in the vehicle parts we were casting. No one knew to make sure to put that near the crucible and when I began pouring my metal into that damn thing the aluminum started bubbling up around the edges of the pig. Luckily I sensed something was wrong when the aluminum bubbles started coalescing into one big bubble. I told my coworkers to get back and a second later POP! all that metal went about 20 feet up and came back down on the crucible operator’s back. Sadly he was the only one not wearing any protective gear. I was told later that at the hospital, it took a very long time to pick all that aluminum out of his back…..some dangerous stuff if not done correctly

You should try using salt flux for separating the aluminum and dross. The slag you keep remelting is impurities stuck to the aluminum. Salt flux will separate it when mixed and stirred into the molten metal and then dross will be on the top of the pot(usually shiny black with very little pearls of aluminum beads). Cans are very dirty as far as what clean aluminum is considered.

So in Sweden (and many European countries) you can recycle the cans for 1kr a piece, which means those 250 cans would be worth about 24 USD, but when you melted it down to raw aluminium, it's now worth about 4,34 dollars for the 2,25kg you collected. Huge loss, but if you just like melting stuff and make youtube videos about it, it definitely adds value! :D

Some US states are the same, but it varies. .05, .10, or nothing per can. Unfortunately scrap metal prices have come down so much that throwing them in the recycling bin in a non-can fee location is the only thing that makes sense. Used to be decent money in scrap aluminum, enough that it was worth saving it until you could turn it in to a salvage place yourself. Melting things however, is always fun.

That's an interesting suggestion! Using salt flux for separating aluminum and dross seems like a viable method to remove impurities from the molten metal. It's intriguing to see how different techniques can enhance the purification process. 🧂🔥🔄 I wonder if this approach could be further optimized for large-scale aluminum recycling, especially considering the high impurity levels in cans. The time was worth the most. Raw materials are cheap but a skilled worker can easily be $30 per hour. But even with the low yield, this has to be one of the most profitable aluminum melts yet because he’s making thousands from ad revenue lol.

Making the bar wasn't done for it to be sold. Returning those cans to the store for 5¢ each would give more than what that aluminum bar is worth.

Would it help to shred or chip the cans instead of crushing them? Seems like you'd be able to get greater density in the crucible.

I’m not sure if it would save space but if it did it would only save you about 1-2 cans

Hey BigstackD! Question, why don’t you sand and polish the inside faces of your moulds? Wouldn’t it help make the bars smoother and require less sanding on each bar? Just a curious question! Love your videos. The wife and I look forward to every Friday! Thanks for the amazing content!!
@mortache
@mortache 2 жыл бұрын
I assume the extreme heat cracks it up. You can't really sand stuff like that as easily as you can sand metal, as they're a lot more brittle in comparison. And even if you could, the residue slag etc would deposit and it would become unpolished when you actually use it

@@mortache oh I wasn’t talking about the sand moulds he makes, but that he uses a lot of those steel ingot moulds. You could polish the inside faces of the steel moulds to make a nice smooth face

Yes that's what I had to always do with my induction furnace, but wasn't doing aluminum as much as stainless steel, but had a separate type of coil/crucible setup and the aluminum one was separate with a hydraulic lift instead of the main one being a tilting box mold.

Can anyone tell me how much extra net profit ( fuel cost subtracted) in terms of percentage can be obtained by selling the aluminum bars instead of selling the aluminum cans?

@@omegadragons321 Yes. The item he is dropping the cans into to melt is called a crucible, which is inside of a forge. The one he uses is specifically called a devil forge. You then pour the molten metal from the crucible into a mold, which also has to be heated. If there is any moisture on the mold at all, it could explode when it comes into contact with the metal. A steam explosion with molten metal is the makings for a bad day. Btw, devil forges run on propane gas just like gas grills. The smallest devil forge set is as little as $350 and has all of the necessary accessories to start smelting including hoses, tongues, a 4kg crucible, gloves, etc. You'll still have to buy molds separately though. The forge gets hot enough to melt steel and graphite molds can handle those temperatures. The devil forge kit and a cheap set of graphite molds. For $400 you could be turning cans into coins lol www.amazon.com/Graphite-Casting-Refining-Crucible-Melting/dp/B08R8WY3H1/ref=sr_1_5?crid=3F5CG63ZWBWJ6&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.MnCNeNJKN6LzsF8EWS2iwrYQ07T7oK6GssBrKh87pp2W_zGJ5KvewV8t38Tx4h-7opY_1xf4esJoXPioOer_Hup3rZO5m_dAlTUrRGB_oAz0KntzRC8YDmZc-9MKfJGFRug6nvep2wUTYZVXUkvk64Zcxsf_9Sm5lfj4INLtWB0hfOZQw8LhZ-HWjYUfXcrGcTUJwIldaVZ9jHnLUa2ZOv27FHC29usvw7oXyx_E7rUO1QYrxa25v8LWQkl_auCUfhJIWRW33QKmNDwVwtfarBWSSBt46jE2aYkdrEtTp0M.-QVXgCibdaUkuFRJQ3ILxcPw217tJfzeDKdU0IngLF4&dib_tag=se&keywords=ingot+mold+set&qid=1717466897&sprefix=ingot+mold+set%2Caps%2C346&sr=8-5 www.amazon.com/DEVIL-FORGE-Propane-Furnace-FB1Sb-Full/dp/B0B3BRJ2JS/ref=sr_1_3?crid=XYJ5MRE43CN0&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.gJcmMqK_Sp9cL-5OAZOKJH2kM-HIJYm2zsoRI21r3aQn8QjoUpK-lRaxfsUIIveQjflPbdeaSu9butkGR7fV1DNnERqm8sUWs7TUBz7Y735ih0Lvlnb4UY6aHJRhL5DlEj0ZnMLd_zAcvP6jxihklfXhUNXyLeHCAmghRUuLWwHF2iaLbZtG02Wwwoxiad7xICcasc8uLPhACFm3bq-jvK6EVDc_EDxEEpjEjcSWbsa3TFXZNEJAnz57RHQud9_lZmhX39aSUlu2Kp0efffXNW-V4Ctc6lJNWA2QF3bdT8o.AdHy3-0iLjxBhY2P6oyI0sBhWs5Bl1vUN2cPtCk7lFM&dib_tag=se&keywords=devil+forge&qid=1717466711&sprefix=devil%2Caps%2C144&sr=8-3
