The Most Underappreciated Seiko Modern Diver - Seiko Sumo SBDC033

There are so many videos of the #Seiko #Sumo, but I had to show off my lightly modded version and hope you may walk away appreciating this watch the way I do. It's a long term “owner review” of one of the most underappreciated Seiko original, modern design divers. Mine is known affectionately as the “Blumo” since it is the blue version, reference #SBDC033.

I totally forgot to mention, I have seen A LOT of Sumo owners purchase a "Crafter Blue" fitted rubber strap. Something I have not done, but will at some point. It (obviously) removes that unsightly gap between the case and strap when it is on. Google them or check out Instagram of other Sumo owners, many use them!

They’re incredible on this watch- more so than on other watches as it really suits their straps (or the other way round). I’m waiting for my second blumo to arrive tomorrow and will probably wait for my summer holiday to get the crafter blue again. The bracelet/clasp are 5/10 and the watch is a 8/10, the crafter blue honestly takes it up to an 8.5/10 - I have a 7in wrist and the CB rubber strap is angled to make the watch wear perfectly. Honestly (I don’t have shares in Cb but) I can’t recommend it enough for this watch. I didn’t like the CB on my mm300 personally.

The case shape , the dial and the bezel are all unique on the Sumo. I have never seen anything like it. On several occasions people have stopped me to ask what kind of watch im wearing. And it's a JDM too. So that makes it an extremely rare bird in the U.S.

I rebought the blumo recently as I loved my previous one, then saw a 3rd gen black sumo on special offer for the same price and figured I should get that and sell/return the blumo, as the new version has a better movement and sapphire Crystal. I also preferred the hands on the newer version and had room for a black diver. But it just didn’t feel right and I actually returned the newer version and kept the blumo- the accuracy was better (it’s a crap shoot with Seiko movements anyway), the bezel didn’t look right and the smaller indices made it feel too boring/generic. It lacked the character of the older sumos to me. For £380 I don’t think you can better lb for £.

Have a 1g Blumo with the script 'Automatic' and 'SCUBA' text. As for 6r15 being inferior, you have it backward. When going 6r35 for the 3rd Gen, they sacrificed accuracy for reserve. Which in my book, wasn't a good choice.

These original Sumos are beautiful watches. I have the Blue Coral edition. It was ridiculous for them to change it. in my opinion. The new models are way overpriced and and have lost the true Sumo vibe. I like what you did with the case back. I didn't realize Namoki carried those.

Excellent review mate! You still have it and enjoy it? I've just pulled the trigger on this exact model, with a sapphire mod already included. I think this is the last real Sumo, the new ones lost too much of the original characteristics. Especially the new king Sumos: they are shiny and expensive with nice specs, but they just don't look like a Sumo.
