Very Awesome Episode! Frank did a very good job of covering many of the issues/topics that have been discussed in previous episodes of this podcast. The most important part of this in my opinion, was his perspective and experiences as a long time keeper and breeder. Frank's openness with changing his keeping to UVB/Halogen heating and enclosure size was very important to hear because he is a breeder. It took time and money but he saw the importance to do so. Also the segment on enclosure size breeder versus keeper is so very important. Really enjoyed this episode, Including the species segments.

I've been living under a rock for a while and have a lot of catching up to do! (And not just the podcast content - the mention of a baby caught me off guard haha congratulations Dillon!). Need to get back in the habit of sitting down with a cup of tea one or two days a week with these podcasts. So glad to see this channel's growth, and the growing appreciation for such consistent, high quality content.

Used to think it was cute how our blue tongue would ask to go on the window sill, or chase patches of sun around the house. Then I read about the importance of different light wave-lengths for reptiles, and decided to get him a UVA (he already had UVB) deep heater lamp and see if he would like it. Not only did he frequently use it, but he also went from almost daily asking to go on the window sill (for almost a year) to all of a sudden never asking for it again. Have not seen him hunting sun patches around the house either since I got him that lamp, and its been almost a year since I got it.

Great episode! So glad you had Frank on. I've been following his channel for a while now and love his perspectives. I pulled the trigger on a Scorpion-tailed gecko because of one of Frank's videos. He helped me understand that these geckos benefit from misting even though they are from arid regions. I spray my gecko daily and he drinks every time. Looking forward to more episodes with Frank in future!

interesting episode. lacertas are my favourite type of lizard and i aim to get some of the smaller species for outdoor keeping (uk) as they are sturdy. its not the right time for me to be getting lizards right now but the ones i am looking at will, at the very least, have a summer enclosure outdoors. it just makes sense, its cheaper for a start, healthier for the animals and can offer much better space. even just the uv tubes, you may only need a new tube every other year if they go out for summer and brumate properly. its more research for sure and the enclosures need to be built carefully but ultimately its a win win. one project i am currently enamoured with is to have a productive outdoor set up. have a carefully laid out enclosure that i can plant veg in that troublesome bugs are attracted to, things like cabbage/cauliflower, so that by virtue of the design i am attracting suitable wild food into the enclosure and be able to grow food for me too.

Great episode as always. I, of course, am now googling Jeweled Lacertas to see what they look like. What a beautiful species! Now on my list of species to research. I am happy your channel/podcast is growing. Your podcast and the expert guests have single handedly improved my husbandry. I am planning on building an enclosure for my bearded dragon this spring and I am using so many references from your show, especially the lighting aspect. Thank you so much for what you do. 😊

I'm a gardener, so friends thought I was nuts leaving California's East Bay Area to live in Colorado. I explained; I'm getting older, garden maintenance can be strenuous. And the older I get, the longer it takes to get things done. So...the cold and snowy winters here are MY 'brumation' and I enjoy the rest I get. When spring springs...I am completely ready and rested to be able to throughly enjoy the new season and my emerging plants. And during springtime, I can still walk upright, it's not till late fall that I'm typically bent...

@@AnimalsatHomePodcast Yeah it's the same for our local small lizards (Podarcis). Some species are near threatened, other are least concern but their numbers are still dwindling due to habitat loss (from agriculture etc). Breaks my heart that I can't keep our local French species but I can buy many exotic ones. Our locals geckos are off limits as well (Tarentola mauritanica).

The commercial reptile industry is not geared to the breeder. I’ve had to design not only caging but also their diet. Pet shops and chain stores are made to bulk sell reptiles giving no thought to its welfare or long term care

All I want to add is please try not to keep any reptile by applying human emotions. I see some pushing for cages to be filled with items to enrich their lives. These I see are changed and altered to keep the reptile ‘enriched’. All this does is stress the animals, they feel secure with their smells and known surroundings. Most will attest to the frustration seeing the animals poop or pee as soon as you change their substrate. They are marking their territory.this makes them feel safe.
