I've been feeling the urge to play chess again and I tricked myself into thinking I'm better than I am. Let's see what sort of damage we can do on Chess.com again!

@@J-J-Jude I play a lot of Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team. With the team I play as, no matter the mission type or terrain layout on the board, I have a set number of opening moves that allow me to set up powerful pieces for future turns or even a couple of gambits to sort of charge a piece out into an aggressive position and force my opponent to think about their activation orders. Basically creating forks or trading key pieces that can affect the end game. It’s not a 1 to 1 relation with chess, but it’s how my brain processes it, and how I remember my moves.

I actually really like the current chess climate where everything is so accessible for anyone looking to get better but I do get NL’s frustration, if he knew an actual opening he’d be so much better, or like, if he knew one trap maybe, you can still wreck people under 1500 online like that, and he could learn one by watching a short video, same way he got better at Mario 64
@maxkho00

His openings are completely fine. Openings are not the reason he is stuck at 1400. There are big holes in his understanding and tactical vision that he needs to patch.

@@maxkho00 He is usually lost by turn 10 though, it seems to me that NL having a solid plan that he can work on would help, if he wanted to play professionally though I would agree with your assessment, but you know, baby steps
@grampaseri
@grampaseri 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like he doesn't do this because he finds it less fun. It's not the same game, but something like Isaac has well-developed "theory" on optimal play that NL historically will just straight ignore because he finds it tedious or it detracts from the fun and zane as he calls it. He's not a min-max enjoyer, and that's ok. Obviously trying to fit the square peg into the round hole here won't work and I think he acknowledges that when he mentions the better you are the less fun it is.
@maxkho00
@maxkho00 2 жыл бұрын
@@eed0018 That's not true. If anything, he's usually better by move 10. Not having a plan is NOT one of NL's problems. If anything, plan generation is, I would argue, by far his biggest strength in chess. He often sees plans most 2000s would miss, and he is also never in a situation where he doesn't know what to do. Out of all the things in his chess, plan generation is not something he needs to work on. In truth, neither are his openings.

Your chess videos are my favorite of your content, and it teaches me a lot about intuition and strategy going hand in hand. Optimism and attitude! But also, if you want to be better at chess, play Go. Learn your openers, go further steps ahead, always be looking at the whole board AT once, it is its own creature, its own living and organic field of interaction and return. Know your strengths, embrace them, and know their weaknesses. Observe certain dangerous situations, like knight on a wall, and learn to prevent them steps ahead, be wary. Play more, make more content. You’ll be as good as I think you’ll make me! XD

You have a good balance of games, and a good diversity and exploration of games. Keep pushing all the content you enjoy, … and chess… but really! Your channel will grow because of these things, all your videos, and the content within them, is largely what is attractive to your audience and potential audiences. Your commentary is great guidance and advice, delivered in an entertaining and optimistic narrative. Your videos improve and improve, and all of them gain you traction! Keep playing chess, to get better, to keep it part of your life and your natural rhythms, to keep having fun with getting better, even if its not performing on the channel, because yours and its success depends on making it comfortable habit and ambition. Just dont give up on it, and it’ll add to all your momentum, all of it as a whole.

Hey NL, on the off-chance you read this, here's some advice, since you mentioned feeling stuck. I think if you really want to get better, you should start training with tactics puzzles first. Your positional sense is not the weakest part of your game, you usually just blunder a piece or miss when your opponent does the same. I think that getting used to the patterns that show themselves when a tactic is on the board is a good step to getting back to where you were, and then some. Also, I know you don't enjoy it as much but maybe a rapid game or two in your free time will give you more time to think through the position, so that if it arises again in a faster game you've already seen it once or twice. Don't give up!
