I had this when I was just a preteen and I loved it so much. It’s so nostalgic hearing the announcer shouting out “AUTO MODELLISTA!!!” When you load it up, the music, the art style and menu type, everything was so comfy. I also wish more driving games would take on a more unique art style like this did, I thought NFS Unbound could’ve been so much better if it leaned into the cartoony style of its character models and smoke clouds/effects

I think racing games should only be sim realistic. Some kid in a bmw understeered off the mountain right in front on me trying to drive fast, I slid down the hill to see if he was ok, he was thankfully. I was just trying to keep a conversation going until fire and ems showed up. Anyway I asked he played any racing games and he with replied with Need for speed lol. I really wanted to say if he played gran turismo with a wheel that wouldn’t have happened but I didn’t have the heart to say it.

Auto Modellista was a great game. One of the first games that allowed you to swap engines and add performance components that actually mattered and changed performance the way they would have in a real car. The cell shading style was a great design choice and made the speed you were going feel real. I think I still have this on my Xbx hard drive and I may just have to fire it up again.

I have the US version of the game on Xbox and the physics aren't the only problem, one of the secret cars is the Shelby Cobra and it's laughably OP to the point you can win every race with it. It has a top speed of over 220mph/355kph when fully upgraded and accelerates like mad, and it doesn't care if you're using slick tires during the rain because it'll still stop on a dime and make turns no problem.

You reminded me it's been 20 years since I wished for a 3rd title adding Euro cars and perhaps more locations. For the handling, I would count as get use of driving without assists similar to a race car. Still, the best way to play is got both OG and US content added on Japanese edition-the game's main focus was about online and stylish anime style, and there's authentic Japanese license plates similar to Tokyo Extreme Racer did.

I beat the US version of Auto Modellista. Handling Physics are heavily focused on oversteer, but if you got a delicate finger and know when to slow down you can keep the car from getting too squirrley. The Toyota Sports 800 with a Supra 2JZ engine swap was very OP in this game (swaps were unlocked after finishing 1st place in every event in the story mode), even though you can't tune a engine swapped car much it was wicked fast at the start of a race and on any course with a long straight-away. Also, in Japan this version of the game was re-released as Auto Modellista: US-Tuned. Not sure if this was the same for the European version though.

Surprisingly enough I find that the US version of Auto Modellista is more intriguing to play in large part thanks to the physics. The most common mistake I've seen people do is attempt to drive just like in any other racing game, where you steer the car to keep turning. With US tune, you'll need to slow down to the appropriate speed, then rotate the car towards the direction you wanna exit, then just keep it pointing there. You do not turn in the US version of Auto Modellista: the car turns for you and you tell it where it should be pointing. It's so unlike any racing game I've played, even including rally games where you'd expect this sort of behavior the most. Once you get that trick down, it'll be a real standout. JP/EU release tends to use a more conventional driving model where the car keeps turning as you as you keep adding steering input, but every single game does that. Give me the weird shit every single time. I'd recommend getting a feel for the physics on the oval then try expanding from there. Though sadly my general opinion of Auto Modellista is that it's the equivalent of one of those small rather nice novelty chocolates. The aesthetic and car feel are rather intriguing, but only enough to last like what, an hour or two before it runs out? There really isn't enough of it. Even tuning is a mess there. Because of Capcom's pretty weird design decisions you get racing slicks that are better on every single surface and any of the max speed gear ratios just end up being underwhelming compared to pure max acceleration due to how short the straightaways are.
