Drew laughing at Brian trying to uncap a pen holding the body stationary and spinning the cap is priceless! BTW - I'm left handed (but very close to ambidextrous) and I hold the body in my left hand (ready to write), but spin the cap with my right hand. I never thought about it before, but maybe this is why I prefer pens without a clip (e.g. Schon Pocket 6, Kaweco Sport, Gravitas Pocket, etc.). Keep up the great work!

The pen capping/uncapping was hilarious. I primarily rotate the cap with my non-dominant hand but I am somewhat ambidextrous. So if I am taking notes and capping/uncapping, I don’t have to reorient my nib. And zebra stripes confuse insects when they try to land. So they get fewer bites.

Thank you, Brian and Drew, for making our families think we're stranger than they already thought we were. We're all sitting here spinning pens and caps trying to figure out if we unscrew the pen from the cap or the cap from the pen. I unscrew the pen from the cap under ordinary circumstances, but it's pretty fun to spin the cap off the pen. The cap is lighter, and you can get a lot of momentum.

Deep Purple of course is a state of the art rock band since they first came on the scene with Shades of Deep Purple. Robert Oster has a very nice purple ink called Deep Purple and it lives up to the name.

Alt Goldgrün was one of my first inks and I loved it but for some reason hadn't inked a pen with it for years. I inked my Leonardo Tredici Arlecchino with it, this pen has incredible 70's colors and the ink is just fantastic in it. I am definitely keeping this combo going for the rest of the year.

Drew, when describing the colour of the braided Innova, you're thinking of the difference between a colour appearing darker because it's more saturated(absorbs the same colours as the original hue, just more of it) as opposed to a colour appearing darker because it has black added(absorbs additional light in the entire hue range equally, not just the original hue, because grey and black are a perfectly even mix of all the colours). Also, Sailor Manyo Sakura is another peach chromoshader, though it leans a bit more into the orange end of the colours of peaches.
@diot Жыл бұрын
Yep, the purple in that pen is unsaturated. The more saturated a color is, the less black/grey/white shows.

I think another thing to remember about the Silvern is that it’s a snap cap. So it’s almost as fast to get to as the Vanishing Point which medical doctors are said to favor because it’s as fast to use as a dreaded ballpoint. Also, as much as I love the 823 it’s a bother to clean, especially where I live given the eternal humidity has me still waiting over a week for the last water drops to evaporate so I can store it.
@TheWanderingFire Жыл бұрын
For the proud dad who wants to buy his PhD daughter a milestone pen, I would also recommend the Vanishing Point Stripes. It has the same look, but has the advantage of being a clicky pen. A PhD will likely be attending many meetings where there will be a lot of stop/start notetaking. Whenever I try to use a fountain pen with a screwcap during a meeting, I don't want to fiddle with it and tend to leave it uncapped, resulting in a lot of hard starts. A clickable pen is unobtrusive and easy to cap between jots.

The uncapping thing is fascinating to me, because what I thought was very normal is apparently weird. I hold the body in my dominant hand in a writing grip and unscrew with my non-dominant. I am right-handed and decidedly non-ambidextrous. After doing this a couple of times I think it’s because this both keeps the pen ready to go almost immediately, but also makes the body the most stable part of the equation-so if something wobbles or drops it’s going to be the cap.
@HGua Жыл бұрын
This is what I do, too. Seems perfectly normal to me. :D

I wonder if people uncap other products by holding the cap still like a soda bottle or supper glue
@kassandraglueck2794 Жыл бұрын
Same here! Especially if I am just doing notes quickly - I unscrew the cap with my left (non-dominant) hand, then keep a hold of it in that hand while I'm writing. The only exception - when I am putting a pen away for the day, I'll use both hands to simultaneously rotate the pen & cap in opposite directions - just a little half twist to make sure it's firmly closed.

Hey Brian and Drew! I started getting into fountain pens earlier this year in the summer, and I found you guys through a recommendation from someone. The Pencasts have brought me joy with your blend of entertainment and fountain pen education. I frequently re-watch your podcasts and write down the Pencast episode number so I can reference where I heard certain tips or recommendations from! The most interesting topics come from your knowledge about retail, distribution, and manufacturing. These topics are very helpful in helping relatively new people, like myself, in understanding things like cost, managing expectations, and the difference of buying from a retailer vs a third-party seller. It thrills me to see an industry where products are made by passionate people FOR passionate people. As with any hobby I've had my frustrations, but ultimately I'm very content with my pen experiences and I've enjoyed this cozy corner of the internet. While I can't guarantee my interest in fountain pens will continue forever, I hope to see this hobby/industry to continue to grow meaningfully with or without me. And I'll continue to watch the Pencasts and enjoy fountain pens as long as I feel like, which could be just a few years or hopefully for the rest of my life!

Absolutely want to see Brian with a sax solo!!! So exciting that he’s enriching his life that way! I really enjoy the pen-uncapping question as I’ve made a recent adaptation. I’m right handed, and I uncap by holding the cap in the palm of my left hand while unscrewing the barrel-end with my right while the pen is horizontal. When capping the pen, I hold the pen the same, but I screw the barrel-end with thumb & index finger of right and left hands alternating, thereby recapping the pen twice as fast. Thank you for a wonderful episode, and I look forward to seeing you again in December. Happy Thanksgiving!

Interesting to see the variations of capping/uncapping described. I think for me (right hand dominant), it depends on where and with which hand I pick up the pen. If I pick up the pen by the cap, my right hand will do the work of twisting/pulling either the body or the cap depending on which part my right hand is holding (or not holding if I happen to pick up the pen with my left hand). If I pick up the pen by the body, again my right hand does the work of twisting/pulling wherever is available to my right hand. Same for putting cap back on.

I have been trying lots of ink samples with different pens and I have questions. What is difference between dry writing ink versus a fast drying ink? How are wet inks versus lubricated inks different? It seems to mostly depend on the nibs but are there quantifiable differences? I plan on getting more samples, I just want to add more to the complexity of my choices. 😊
@bluejchou4404 Жыл бұрын
Great question!🙋🏻 I do wonder what makes some inks more lubricated as they flow out of the nib.

I have had my Visconti Homo Sapiens Magma for a while now. I got mine when the nibs were made of iridium and was shortly before the changeover in the material. I count myself lucky that I got a great nib right out of the box. Most folks I know who own these pens have had no trouble with their nibs at all. It was my first grail pen and is still one of my favorite pens.

Great pencast as always! Thank you so much!❤ I'm unscrewing the cap, but thinking about it, almost all fountain pens in my youth were the ones you don't screw. It was more a fancy thing on expensive pens. So we all just quickly took the cap with our non-dominant hand so it is "out of the picture" and you can write right away. Because of that I always have to carefully watch my family as they try to uncap every fountain pen without unscrewing. It's always a heartattack when they try to open some of my fountain pens.😅

As a huge Gundam fan, particularly of the Gunpla side of things, I felt I should share some info! The grade denotes the size and complexity of the kit. There are four primary grades I see the most - HG (High Grade), MG (Master Grade), RG (Real Grade), and PG (Perfect Grade). HG is 1/144 scale and generally easy to build, but also less detailed than the others. MG is 1/100 scale, significantly more pieces, more functional mechanics, more detail, etc. RG is basically the same vibe as MG, but at 1/144 scale - harder to build because of the size. Then PG is massive at 1/60 scale, with the most mechanics and pieces and complexity. Generally those even have LED kits and such that can be added to them. I recommend looking up the PG Banshee for reference, it is wild. Regarding the name, "Aerial" is the name of that particular Mobile Suit - it is from the Witch from Mercury series, and is the Mobile Suit used by the main character. If interested, there is also a 1/100 scale Aerial that may be fun to build! I have it sitting in my collection of unfinished kits, looking forward to building it someday! Gunpla is fantastic, and it honestly made me smile a lot to see both of you getting a chance to try it out. (As a side note, I've been watching since the Goulet Q&A days, a huge fan of everything y'all do

But today - IMMEDIATELY after finishing my walk and just having listened to "how do you unscrew your pen?" - I had to pick up my nearest pen and uncap it. Oh, and occasionally I've disassembled a pen; that was a slip cap pen; by unscrewing it. Have you done that too? Dennis Hopper was in Easy Rider, but mabe ya'll are too young to know about that one. NEXT TIME I'LL TRY USING THE BODY BECAUSE IT SHOULDN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Like most, I uncap by twisting the body with dominant hand. But there is one more option I do when the non-dominant hand is busy (holding an ink bottle e.g.)... I hold the body between the top of the palm and pinky and ring finger, and unscrewing the cap with thumb and index finger then letting the cap fall on the table.
@TJulieta Жыл бұрын
Both! I unscrew the cap with my non-dominant hand holding the pen horizontally then post to the pen that's already in my writing hand. When I screw the cap back on, I screw in the body while holding the cap below the level of the pen or hold horizontally and counter-screw both parts at the same time. Most of my screw cap experience is with the Sailor Compass, so it takes a lot to get that cap secured. THIS WAS FUN! 😄 P.S. I'm a lefty who's not completely left dominant. I have been known to write like a 5th grader with my right hand and there are several things in my life that I can only do with my right side.

I have an exception to the right handed uncapping process! I uncap all my pens with my right hand except my Kaweco! Something about the "kaweco collection" printed on the cap ending up upside down makes me NEED to uncap that one by unscrewing the body with my left hand instead, even though it then requires me to move the pen to my other hand. But I can't do it the other way without getting uncomfortable! So weird! PS I love the haunted mansion ride too, Drew!

I’ve been trying to observe myself regarding the pen uncapping conundrum. The thing I was sure of at first-holding the pen with nib a bit higher than the horizontal plane is generally true. But then, I use both hands or unscrew/pull with my non-writing hand. I’m not consistent. As others have mentioned, I also have one hand methods. I’m just enough ambidextrous that I’ll use a tool with whatever hand grabs first or what angle makes sense. This can get a bit confusing, such as recently when I subbed into the percussion section (my secondary instrument since high school). I kept thinking “What is wrong with me? I can play the bass drum better than this. Is there something off with this drum?” About an hour into rehearsal, I suddenly think, “Wait, I’m not left handed!” Switching positions brought back my skill, and I still picture The Princess Bride fight scene every time I tell the tale.

I grip the cap using my thumb and 3 fingers, twisting them it until it gently runs through my fingers and repeat! Uncapping the pen with the body feels too forceful, and I grip the pen as if I'm about to write. That way, I have the pen all good to go! Great cast. It's nice listening to this while I clean or do something on the side.

Hi Drew, maybe check out the Octopus Fluids Pastell Living Coral for a similar vibe to the 173 - it has an amazing neon yellow glow that really took me by surprise! ✨

I’ve just realised I uncap and cap both ways? I mainly use a Kaweco sport so it might be different for other pens maybe. But I unscrew the main body when opening the pen with my right hand but screw on the top with my left when I’m closing it.

30:51 That's not what I've heard from nibmeisters who work on the new in-house nib... I just last month battled with my retailer to get a working EF nib on an Homosapiens (and got a defective clip too) ; absolutely impossible out of the 5 or 6 EFs they had in stock. I got bit while trying to purchase one of the Palladium ones at the time, and now just got bit again by this unscrupulous company. Maybe Visconti needs another decade or so in order to simply realise they should properly check their nibs at the factory. I'll just get another Scribo; and maybe you should do too if you want an Italian pen from a company showing respect towards their customers and partners.

I unscrew my Kaweco Sport with my writing hand and then post into the cap. So no transferring. But just with my Sport, since it's so small and I hold the cap a little when writing.

The unscrewing thing blew my mind, I only use snap caps (I did just order an eco that hasn’t arrived yet) but I always hold the cap in my non dominant hand when uncapping.

Hey there, not sure if you mentioned the change to DHL for international shipping in a Pencast or just over email. I was excited to get some stuff with the Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals and realized Mexico is no longer listed 😢

On pen capping/uncapping: also a body untwister. I always insert the pen into the cap as well (mostly) but what I turn seems to depend on the pen. If it has a clip, I twist the body. But I noticed when I tried with a clipless cap, I'm twisting the cap instead. Strange, indeed. I, too, am behind on MCU. I saw Iron Man and the first Captain America. And have probably seen a lot of clips on YT. That's it, lol. 5 gal buckets are so useful. But it's only like $4-5 still at HD :) But they've gotten thinner... (I use them for car washing/supplies).

If I think about it, I hold the pen by the cap in my non-dominant hand and unscrew the barrel with my dominant hand. I think this is largely because I tend to hold on to the cap while I'm writing, whether the pen is postable or not. But I've also found that it depends on how I pick the pen up to begin with--if the cap is in my dominant hand, I'll unscrew it that way and just switch to write. It's more awkward, but it gets done. Also I wanted to note: Drew, your note about the Silvern being a little heavy for a pocket was a good one, but I feel obligated to mention that women's blouses rarely have a breast pocket (even blazers do not generally come with the inner breast pocket), so we're not usually carrying our pens that way to begin with. ETA: My husband strongly and emphatically agrees with Drew that Living With the Land is the best ride at Disney World.

I unscrew the Kaweco Sport on the barrel. BUT I hold the cap with my writing hand. Because of course I post the thing. And this way, when I slide in the barrel into the cap, my writing hand slips forward on the cap into the position I hold it, in one motion.

Yellow Jackets swimming in your mouth!!!??? Wow! What a story. No, NIGHTMARE! Man. That story takes the cake. Whatever that means... Where DO we get that saying from??? Rabbit hole appears, will I jump down or get back to my tasks? 😅
