Unpopular opinion: Sword and Shield's graphics aren't bad. They aren't great either, but it's a good baseline for future pokemon games. My main problem with them isn't the low resolution tree, it's the fact that the map models and the human/pokemon character clash. They aren't the same art style and it feels like the lighting used for the overworld/map environments is different compared to the character models

But Sword and Shield were supposed to be the evolution, not the baseline. Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee were supposed to set the bar and get Game Freak used to working on the Switch, but they totally dropped the ball and made SWSH look arguably worse.
@palathaxx3 жыл бұрын
@@kiavra1789 Is it so unreasonable to expect graphics that are at the very least decent when the company has nearly limitless money to work with AND experience on the console? The Switch is drastically different than the 3DS, but they had a full game development cycle to figure out the kinks. Not to mention they could have simply used their enormous amount of money to hire people who had worked on switch games.
@palathaxx3 жыл бұрын
@@kiavra1789 To say that they had nearly unlimited money is not strange. The Pokemon is quite literally the most profitable media entity ever. The brand grosses over $92 billion USD annually. The most expensive videogame ever produced was Red Dead Redemption 2, at $450 million USD. The Pokemon company could trump that using 1/200 of their annual income. That much money DOES equal quality, because Game Freak could easily hire anybody they needed to to make the animations work. The talent exists, as we've seen with exquisitely animated games like Pokken Tournament and New Pokemon Snap. If Game Freak needed ANYONE with that level of experience and talent, they could pay to find and hire them. Hell, they could just pay Bandai Namco, who made those two aforementioned games, to help out.

Gen 3 Plusle and Minun - Double battles and abilities. Gen 4 Pachirisu - Gender diferences and physical/special split with pachirisu being the first pikachu clone with higher attack rather than special attack and being one of the mascots for the gen 4 online battles. Gen 5 Emolga - Hidden abilities. It is even the only pokemon in the gen 5 games that had motor drive as hidden ability specifically. Gen 6 Dedenne - Fairy type. @theoaremevano32273 жыл бұрын
I have one for you: After Gen 1 and up until generations 7 and 8 where they started messing with the evil team idea a bit, I felt like a lot of evil teams were falling into a samey trend. There's a big, motivated villain at the top with a bunch of followers with motivations that are significantly less clear. They're just 'part of a group' and their jerkish attitudes seem to be because they're kind of assholes I guess. Then there's the order of events. -You run into a couple here and there trying to steal things for 'insert reason here'. -You beat them because they're so bad at raising Pokemon that their mons don't even evolve well after their evolution level (???). -They have a couple of officers that don't seem any more interesting than the grunts, they just have different colored hair, more annoying personality traits and a name. -You eventually fight the leader. -They go and piss off some legendary Pokemon thinking it'll do whatever they want. (Ask Eggman how well that plan works.) -It doesn't work because nobody can control these things. -You catch it. -You rock. -You go kick in some heads at the Pokemon league. Taking a step back from the games they were in, it felt like they kept going over the same basic order of events, even when the main villain had totally different motivations. For some reason, they always had to have a TEAM. Having organized villains in RPGs is not uncommon, but a lot of RPGs tend to focus on the main officers a lot more, where in Pokemon, the officer rank characters are just 'the only people other than the leader who use evolved Pokemon'. It's still hard to put the while idea into words because there ARE different things about each game, but it felt to me like a mix of new ideas and old obligations that kept them from developing more distinct identities. I honestly liked Skull because of how they felt like a group of people with good reason to gang up and take on the rest of the world, and a lot of their similarities with past groups were kind of treated as jokes, like the grunts making fun of the fact that they're all named "Grunt".
@laurensprungl77223 жыл бұрын
i just dislike that very few times does the player actually have a reason to be fighting the evil team...it doesn't have to be like "They kidnapped/killed my parents" or anything but having an actual story-level reason for fighting them would be nice. this is what gen 5 does well, in BW team plasma kinda impedes your progress on the gym challenge multiple times and even steals Bianca's Munna at one point. and in B2W2 your rival and best friend Hugh had a pokemon stolen from his little sister, and your fighting them because you want to help your friend and rival.

The always needing a team for some reason is a really interesting point. Imagine a threatening ass villain that's just on his own. Someone like Ghetsis. He was so threatening that people made theory's assuming he killed the protagonists of black and white 1.

Hop on the other hand was eager to get stronger to defeat the person he admired and got affected by every single battle he lost. Both ended up discovering their own potential after the battles againts you the player. Hau gaining the determination to become a strong trainer and stop using having fun as an excuse and Hop discovering how much he liked to interact with pokemon and gaining a new dream in which he could help all of them like he did with Zacian/Zamazenta ( a legendary pokemon that recognized Hop as a worthy trainer).

I definitely agree that the EXP Share is a very handy item for doing just that: when an opponent is simply overleveled compared to you, or you are raising an egg pokémon to be on your team. However, I still think it can be abused to the point where you don't get to enjoy the game, because you OHKO everything, so you don't get to see what strategies the opponent has prepared. Anyway, I personally find it more fun when you are on a more even playing field with the opponent. That way it feels more like you are battling an actual person, rather than lawnmowing :)

@@antonioiniguez1615 I'm thinking more about younger/newer players, who might not know about how these games tend to be balanced throughout the run of the story or how experience (or EV's for that matter) is supposed to work, or how overtraining might ruin their experience of the game. The old exp. share I am perfectly fine with since the implications of its use are more limited and more easily graspable to a 7-year-old. What I'm not so ok with is the default 'on' mode of the new one and the even distribution. It makes it harder to focus on bringing up a particular 'mon, as well as make it much easier to forget about exploring the world because you are automatically powerful enough to progress through the storyline without either that or any kind of strategy. Ideally, this would be the trade-off; either you explore side-areas/quests and get experience that way, or you are enough of an experienced battler to know how to win in a disadvantaged position- But this is part of the problem I have with some of the newer games in general, that the element of exploration is somewhat side-lined in favour of linearity and flashy story events. It's not completely one-sided; The Wild Area is great for that feeling of discovering new species, and the whole of Alola felt very much like a connected ecosystem with lots of hidden encounters. I'm not saying go back to gen 1 and being stuck outside of Saffron City for several years because you don't know English yet (defo not me xD), but I feel like Satoshi Tajiri's original vision of Pokémon (exploring and collecting) should be a bit more front and centre.

Ragging on Hoenn games for having three Water HMs is generally rather hypocritical, because the resident sacred Miltank games GSC/HGSS _also_ have three Water HMs that you need to use in the story. And while it's excessive in both games, at least in Gen III all of them are decent moves: Surf is great, Waterfall is not quite as strong but does have a handy side-effect if you're using something fast, and also becomes _the_ move for physical Water types come ORAS, and Dive isn't as good as either but opens up some interesting strats. Gen II/IV, however, has Whirlpool. A move that is almost objectively useless. In addition, HGSS makes this problem _bigger_ by adding Rock Climb to Mt. Silver. The final dungeon, the leadup to the final boss of the whole game, and you have to either bring an HM mule or burden one of your team with an HM.

Everything is simplified and exaggerated so we know that the bad guy's plans are horrible and stupid. At the same time you don't have to look far to see real world examples of what is going on in these games. A quick example is natural ponds/lakes being drained to build million dollar developments, only for flooding to happen because no one thought/cared where the water might go. Then after people grow up and stopping acting like spoiled brats, the once hated gen gets placed on a pedestal as the “pinnacle” of Pokémon. If you don’t believe me just look into it, you will see that every gen got trashed at first and then exalted. We are currently in the exalting phase of gen 4, 5. Hot take, making the exp share always on in swsh is waaay better then having it as something you can toggle on or off. This meant gamefreak could actually balance the game knowing exactly how much exp an average player would be having at each point. Instead of having to design every fight keeping in mind that a player that has played through the entire game without ever using the exp share should also be able to beat it.

@WhinyDogFish Yeah, Pokémon Sword and Shield could have been the best Pokémon Games if the wild area is reduced to make more routes because galar have only 10 routes in total, so reducing the wild area would create 5 more routes in route 11-route 15 in galar to create route 11, route 12, route 13, route 14 and even route 15 in galar and to create more optional areas to explore in the main game and more postgame areas in mainland galar to explore in the postgame.

An Actual unpopular opinion I have would be that I don't mind humanoid/humanoid trait pokemon. I don't really understand why everyone gets bothered by them. As far as I'm aware they have always existed: Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Mr Mime, Jynx, Smeargle, Elekid, Bellosom, Blaziken, Swampert, Nuzleaf, Ludicolo, Sableye, Glalie after all is a giant face. You can list off countless mon that yes, look very like a rabbit for example but also display very humanid features/traits and behaviours. It's quite common in fantasy/religion/storytelling to give the creatures human interactions or traits to help humans empathize with the characters of a different species. There's a reason why most accounts of aliens/fantastical creatures have them looking vaguely like humanoids so as, as humans we can interpret and understand emotion on their faces and body language if it's similar to our own. I don't personally understand why it irks so many people. Pikachu is a rat/mouse that stands on two legs most of the time and as a character behaves like a human in it's interactions with other creatures so as human children we could emphasize and understand the interactions between the Pokemon not speaking a recognizable language. The Pikachu's vacation short is a very good example of this, barely any recognizable language but by giving human body language to the Mon's and making them humanoid in their responses & behaviours we understand that Snubbull is 'dismissive' and Raichu and Pikachu demonstrate 'dissatisfaction' with each other and Bulbasaur and the gang express 'worry' over Togepi. Their animal counterparts you would not be able to detect these emotions without zoological training of some kind. Every pokemon is deliberately given a humanoid face when it eats so you are able to detect the food they are eating is giving them pleasure. More humanoid traits the better the pokemon get and the more i can buy into their designs, is my personal view.
