@@triscuitrotsef1799 I agree we are better than a lot of countries, however there is still room for improvement. I personally do not like how ppl say “just leave” when they know it’s not that easy. I’m established here. I have family here. I’m only fluent in one language, like plenty of ppl in the states. But back to the point, I think it’s great to appreciate how far we’ve come but that’s not an excuse to become complacent. It’s then that we’ll start moving backwards. It’s like saying “I have a B in this subject but this other student has an F, but at least i’m not them. I don’t need to improve anymore”.

Just a very small correction in the meaning of “military police”. In Brazil every state of the federation has two police forces: the Polícia civil (civil police) and the Polícia militar (military police). The civil police is responsible by investigate crimes, do some types of operations again gangs an organize crime and is responsible to conduct some types of identification and documentation programs. The military police is responsible by patrol the streets, go check calls for help, combat crime in a direct way and respond to riots and other operations that require more extensive force. If compared to most of the USA, the Brazilian military police, is like the regular state an district polices forces and the civil police is like an investigation department. The USA military police would be like army police in Brazil; that is a totally different organization then the Brazilian common military police.

I'm surprised that the Strangeways Prison Riot in Manchester, England in April of 1990 didn't make the list. It is widely considered to be the worst prison riot in both Europe and in Great Britain during the late 20th century. My assumption is that because only one inmate and one corrections officer died it wasn't gruesome enough for the list.

Carandiru is a lot worse than you think, It was definitely the worst prison massacre in history, there is a film that better explains what really happened .. but a fight broke out during a football match and soon after turned into a rebellion, the prisoners take control of the prison and remove the guards from the prison. prison house, at that time they were armed and had taken care of the prison, after that the director appears in front of the building where the prisoners were and negotiate the end of the rebellion, all the rebellious prisoners hand over their weapons and promise to "behave" .. the prisoners throw their guns away, but somebody, at that moment, throws something at a policeman like a toilet or something. At that moment the police entered the prison with brute force and killed hundreds, all already surrendered and unarmed ... what the State passed on to the media was the total of 111 deaths, however, there were more than 250 prisoners killed and no police death at all. .. there were no consequences for the policemen, not even one was killed and there are some captains that are glorified even today .. after a while the prison became a museum and was later demolished because of the shame that passed to us from São Paulo
