Inside the Hidden Gem: World's Largest Cathedral

The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano (Basilica of St. John Lateran) is one of the most important Roman Catholic churches in Rome and the world. It is the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, who is the Pope, and is therefore known as the "mother and head of all churches of Rome and in the world."
The basilica is located in the city of Rome but belongs to the Holy See, an entity of international public law, and therefore enjoys extraterritoriality. This means that the basilica is not under the jurisdiction of the Italian government but is under the authority of the Pope, similar to a foreign embassy.
The current basilica was constructed under Pope Sergius III in the 10th century. However, the site has a much longer history. It was first converted into a Christian church by Emperor Constantine I in the 4th century AD, over the foundations of an earlier Roman cavalry barracks.
The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is dedicated to both John the Baptist and John the Evangelist. Inside, it is known for its ornate decorations, including its beautiful 18th-century ceiling and its 13th-century cloister. The Lateran Palace, the former papal palace, is adjacent to the basilica.
