The "Running W" stunt sometimes killed the horse. It is no longer used.

The Running W was an old skull form of equipment. Its replacement was called a toe-tapper and was significantly easier for the horse to wear and use. Both these options have been outlawed nowadays.

The horses are trained for months on end to get to this standard. What many forget is that when you see a horse on screen that jumps something then runs through a crowd of gun firing outlaws and then falls to the ground that is 3 horses not just one. Each is trained to the highest standards in their own special area of filming

I doubt that body builders just sign up and do stunts . They get injured easier than most people . i can only assume these stunt men found out early in childhood they could take a fall or knocked about better than the other kids, possess really good bones and joints, are wiry more than overly muscular and they start from the start, learn their trade . it takes lots of work

I don't like seeing horses take falls

My mum was the same. She loved horse racing, jump racing in the UK, but didn't like to see the falls. Those falls, compared to these are very different. In sport horses aren't trained how to fall like they are in cinema.

Horses who perform in movies, especially horses who do fall stunts are trained on how to fall in as safe a manner as possible, they don’t just fall Willy nilly, it looks scary though because horses tend to kind of flail a lot . These scenes seem to be from older movies, nowadays fall mats are often used for falling stunts for both humans and horses.

Hey I am surprised he did not include my Great Yakima Canutt stunt in Stage Coach where he was dressed up as a Indian. He jumped onto the middle of the lead horse then flipped up side down to pull himself underneath. My Great Uncle started in the Stunt business when there were no stuntman "the word was not even invented yet". Its to bad I only got to meet him twice in my life. First time in late 60s? I dont recall was to small. Second time 1979 when He as retired.

Very rarely do you see horse falls these days - often a shot is a cutaway - you see a gun fire, the actor on the back of the horse fall backwards and then the final shot of him lying on the floor next to his horse but rarely in the same shot anymore

Yakima Canutt was the king of the horse stunt

Yakima Cannut was my Great Great Unkle. My mom, Marci Canutt and rest of our family went to see him one last time in 1979. I asked my mom why could we not see him more often. She said he was WAY to busy making films and was away alot! She told me when she was in her teens, he was away doing films and would stop buy and they went out to dinner. When my family visited his house in west Hollywood I have NEVER seen some one with so many awards. I got to hold his academy award. the only award that a Stuntman of the time to be awarded. The Award was given to him by Charlton Heston. Mom told me what the family was like and well it was slightly dysfunctional "family secrets wont be told here". I never did get to See Joe and Tap. Not sure if the Daughter Honey is still alive. But the life he led was amazing. One of the thing I remember about the house was his Italian Riffle collection. I think he bought those in Italy during the Ben Hur Production. In the spare room where he gave me and rest of family his new yellow stuntman book, I looked up near the ceiling where lots of large 6x9 photos were taped at the edge of the Celing "strange I know" I saw a stunt that I recognized. It was a picture of Joe Canutt being winched out the back of a Sikorsky Ch-53 to the cockpit of the 747 and I yelled out "hay, I have seen that before!" his wife mentioned it was his son Joe on the Winch. This is a funny story, but Six years in the future I would joined the USAF and I trained on the Sikorsky Ch-53 and Ch-3e :)

Some of these use CGI, some use puppets or rideable props with green screens like for the spear clip, some use actual stunt horses like for when they fall on their sides, there is usually a horse trainer riding them, and it's a trick the horses learned, and some are actually hurt or killed by methods that are no longer accepted due to cruelty, i.e. the infamous Running W, where string is strapped to the horse's front ankles on an anchor, and when the horse has ran the full length of the string, it yanks their front feet back and the horse falls forward in a quick and violent manner.

Animal Cruelty... There is no much "Stunting" here, just poor horses being pulled down to the ground, when they are in full charge and not expecting anything...
