Just saw this. I am a retired critical care RN. I worked in mostly urban atess with one exception. I saw it every thing you mentioned & then some. I vividly remember being told Black patients were ALWAYS drug seeking when compared with similar White patients who were granted pain relief, Admissions would try HARD not to " mix the races' as roommates if it at possible. As a paramedic student, I was told I had to push the needle in VERY HARD in darker patients to g😢and "through darker skin". I was told it would hurt the patiemt MORE if I used a gentler technique. It was better to stab hard once than sllide in quickly. Later in my career I became an instructor, I made sure to debunk as much as I knew. I spent my entire career trying to find a ways to be the best advocate for my patients and trying to let me learnv things from their unique perspectives. However I, being a White woman born in the South before transplanted North, I had idea what I didn't know. The history of medicine is brutal and unnecessary sometimes but I firmly believe every level from a first course through fellowship needs this debunking pushed until it's all gone. I am sorry I unintentionally caused these traumas and be forever grateful to all my patients for being my teachers.
